I am also very confused about the positive reviews. This was the worst resort that I have stayed at in Jamaica. Staying at the Royal Decameron definitely put a damper on the extremely anticipated Jamaica trip that my friends and I were looking forward to and planning for months! What a disappointment! If you value high quality resorts, comfort, and good Jamaican food, this is not the place to stay. Checking into this hotel was definitely a tedious process. After a long trip you want to just check in with ease and relax. Due to lack of staff working at the time we waited for a while and then had to sign various documents stating that we would be obligated to pay a fee if we lost our room key or beach towel card. If you lose your room key it is $50 and if you lose your beach towel card it is $20. Not to mention that you have to pay $2.00 a day in order to use the safe in your room. If you lose the key to the safe, you would be charged $100!
The rooms are definitely outdated and need some serious renovations. Do not let the professional pictures fool you. One of the first things I noticed when we walked in our room was the terrible sewage smell coming from the bathroom. It took at least two flushes for the toilet because the water pressure was very low. The shower was just unacceptable because of the grout and mildew on the tiles. Needless to say, we requested a room change because I knew I couldn't live 7 days that room. Our A/C also did not work and although maintenance guy supposedly fixed the issue, it still did not work well.
The second room was a lot better but still had some issues. The tile was a bit better in the bathroom but there was permanent dirt marks at the bottom of the tub. Each room has those disgusting shower mats that everyone has used which I think is unsanitary. Bring your shower shoes! There were some dark spots on the wall in the shower, I am not sure if it was mold or mildew. At this point I had to block certain things out of my mind in order to get through the remainder of the trip. The fact that I had to do that is just ridiculous while on vacation.
Some of the staff was nice but some were not. I definitely think that customer service training would be beneficial to some of the employees here. However, some employees were very nice and did their job well. I met a really nice staff member that shared with me some interesting things about how staff is treated and how they are not paid very well. It made me wonder if that contributed to some of the unfriendly attitudes that my friends and I encountered. If the information is accurate about the poor wages and poor treatment of staff, people should never support any hotel or resort that exercises demeaning practices towards employees.
The food was an outrage. The fact that I ate more American food in Jamaica is troubling. The fact that the Royal Decameron has “Jamaican Night” is just unacceptable. Every night should be Jamaican night because we are in Jamaica!!! The selection of food was not that great at all and I couldn't believe the best choices for breakfast was pancakes and French toast! In Jamaica! Seriously! Very disappointing. I did enjoy the coconut ice cream. I didn't eat a mango at the resort until the last day!?!?!?!
One of the most disturbing things that happened on this trip was a security guard calling my room. As a single woman staying in a room alone this was very alarming. My friends walked me back to my room after we went out one night. One of the security guards spoke to us causally and we didn't think too much of it. As soon as my friends left to go their room, my phone rings and it’s the security guard asking me to come outside and talk to him. This was extremely inappropriate and disturbing.
Another safety issue is the fact that the lights are turned off at a certain time (at least on the floor I was on). Therefore, you are walking to your room and it is pitch black. Unacceptable!
Overall, I would never stay at this resort again. This resort did not represent the Jamaica that I come to know and love…
