Very beautiful and amazing resort! Wild orchid and st James basically is one big resort with guests sharing both sides including beaches (st James side much larger and way less rocky than wild orchids side), pools, restaurants and entertainment centers. No wrists bands or restaurant reservations needed except for the himachi grill part of the himitsu restaurant (reservations not needed for a la carte dining). Never had to wait any longer to be seated.
I'm a foodie and based on reviews on TA was expecting better food. Went to Secrets the Vine in Cancun for my honeymoon last year and every single meal was exceptional and surpass my expectations... First class.
World cafe Buffet during breakfast was good. Made to order Omelette station. Basic american breakfast fare. Eggs, bacon, sausages, ham, smoked salmon, fruits, bread, pastries and fruit juices.
World cafe Lunch buffet was not very good, boring and repetitive. Oceana (wild orchid poolside) lunch serves design your own wraps type of menu with a cold bar buffet of fruits and assorted salads. We fould it ordinary and kind of like cafeteria quality. Nothing special. So we tried lunch at st James side's version of the poolside dining (forgot the name) and it too wasnt very good..fish of the day was dry. Then there was barefoot grill (set between a beach path walk from wild orchids to st james) which serve chips, nachos, burgers, beef/chicken jamaican patties and fountain drinks. This is a good option for people who wants a quick bite to eat. I really wish there were more quality lunch options to choose from. So we ended up eating jerk chicken from the cart they pushed around for lunch the rest of the trip which was EXCEPTIONALLY good by the way!!! Moist succulent chicken in a rich and spicy sauce. We're really gonna miss the jerk chicken for sure.
Saturday nights are lobster nights at the buffet. We were really excited about it and expected lobsters more than one way. They had 3 stations with lobster and side dishes. All three station served the same grilled lobsters and the same sides. Lobsters at all 3 stations made by different cooks were very dry. And dinner lacked "buffet" variety in both lobsters and sides.
For our anniversary night dinner we decided to dine at Bordeaux. Their top fine dine restaurant. Again another disappointment. We ordered all the recommended dishes. Escargot app lacked flavor. Savory crepe app was pretty one note and also lacked flavor. Surf and turf (sirloin and half a lobster tail) asked for med rare but came out well done with again, a dried out lobster tail. Husband's dish was unmemorable. Can't remember what he had that night for the life of us and we've only been home 2 days. We pretty much gave up on the food here but we gave Bordeaux a second try on our last night and its was an amazing last supper!!! Maybe it was a different cook?? Idk but we both loved it!! Lobster bisque, some type of cheese fondue app, lamb 2 ways entree and tried the surf and turf once again. Everything was excellent!! Husband especially loved the fondue plate. And the surf and turf made a complete 180 on me. Steak perfectly cooked and well seasoned. Lobster tail was deliciously "melt in your mouth" tender!! I wished the food was was at this level the first time we tried the restaurant!! We would've eaten here more often.
Portifino only has one good dish out of the 8 we tried between the 4 of us and it was the prawn risotto app. Sooooooo yummy!! Creamy yummy deliciousness!!! Or pastas all lacked flavor and proteins were really dry and underseasoned...even the meatballs!!
Himitsu's himachi grill was really run and entertaining. Food was once again dry..steak, shrimp. Fried rice really salty. It was good that they asked if anyone had food allergies though. I really give it to the himachi grill guy chefs..they were so entertaining and funny. The diners behind us at the girl's himichi grill seemed kind of quiet and bored though...maybe she's new. She was quiet and shy. We came back another night for a la carte and it was OK. We enjoyed the spicy soup and the miso soup.
Didn't get to try the blue mountain restaurant.. It wasnt open everyday. And wasn't able to try patio restaurant.
Room service's breakfast menu was very limited for non preferred room guest. No eggs, bacon, sausages...only fruit, pastries, yogurt and cereal. All day Menu (I think its from 11am-10pm) was decent. Late night menu is limited too..mostly sandwiches..so for a 6 night stay it did get repeatative. We eat late night a lot.
There are mosquitos here. Even more during this raining time of year and I got eaten alive. I had lots of large, inflammed, throbbing and super itchy bites. I wasn't prepared for this. They have repeallent at the convenience store on site. Expensive though. Some people had my types of bites while others had tiny nothing bites. They will spray your room down if asked. Had to get it done daily.
Overall I had a excellent time at this beautiful resort. Great service but we would only come back if their food quality improves. Hope this review helps
Stayed here for our 1st anniversary 9/7-9/13.
