My husband and I just got back from Secrets Wild Orchid and it was absolutely wonderful! We went for our honeymoon from July 9-15, 2012. Here are a few tips for you either getting ready or not sure yet if this is the place to go! Check-in was pretty easy we got off the bus to “Welcome Home,” and cold towels and drinks. Our room wasn’t quite ready so we had lunch at Oceana while we waited. Our room was amazing. It had a big comfortable king size bed, plenty of room for all our things, and a great big bathroom (the doors were frosted, but it wasn’t a big deal). We also read many things about how hot the rooms got, we did not have that problem our room was always cool if not cold! We would go down to the pool and put towels on the chairs we wanted for the day (usually by the pool) since the hotel was not at capacity this probably wasn’t necessary, but we wanted a prime spot for the day. Once we had picked our chairs we would go to the World Café for the buffet breakfast. We would wear bathing suits and cover-ups. Buffet offered the “normal” breakfast buffet: eggs (scrambled, omelets made to order, hard boiled, etc.), bacon, pancakes, potatoes, hash browns, breads, lots of fruit, cereal, cheese, the list goes on and on. They also have a lunch buffet with pastas, burgers, sandwiches, jerk chicken, etc. We would spend most of our day at the pool or beach. We ordered lots of drinks at the Sugar Reef swim-up bar. You MUST try the Dirty Banana that Miss Karen makes its delicious and the Five Star from Leo. You also have to make sure you have chicken from the Jerk Chicken cart its so good!!
As for the restaurants I am an extremely picky eater and I found something at every restaurant. The only one we did not try was Blue Mountain the Jamaican restaurant only because we didn’t think we would like it. You can find the menus to all the restaurants either right by the Rendezvous Bar in the lobby or outside the World Café. Here is the break down:
Oceana: We ate lunch and dinner here. For lunch they have a salad bar and wraps and burgers. Swimsuits and cover-ups are fine. For dinner it turned into a seafood restaurant. Shirts and shorts are fine, it says no flip-flops, but we both wore them with no problems.
Bordeaux: We had dinner here it was really good! We noticed here that there was a couple in front of us the woman had a dress on and the man a nice shirt and shorts we saw the hostess look at what he was wearing and she told them it would be a half hour wait. We walked up and I was wearing a dress and my husband was wearing long khakis and a polo and we got right in. Usually if you are wearing shorts they will seat you outside, but the wait might be longer. Also, sometimes it’s nicer to sit outside because most of the restaurants are not air-conditioned.
El Patio: Dinner here was also good! Dress shorts and shirts are fine.
Himitsu: This was our best and favorite dinner! We sat at the hibachi table, which you have to have reservations for. You can make those right outside the World Café in the morning. Don’t wait until the last minute because they go fast! They serve you soup, sushi, vegetables, chicken, steak, and shrimp!
Portofino: Was another one of our favorites we ate there twice. We preferred to sit outside because most of the performances were right next to it so we had pretty good seats! Long pants and shirts are recommended, but my husband wore shorts.
Seaside grill: This is located at St. James pool. A little bit heavier than Oceana for lunch, but still really good! Swimsuits and cover-ups were fine.
At night they do have ice cream by the coffee bar! No one told us this and we found it by accident one night!
They provide you with The Sundial every night at turn down. It tells you all about the next days events, weather, drink of the day, etc.
The only things we spent money on are tips (we gave $2-3 for dinner or drinks), the spa, and a glass bottom boat tour. The spa is a bit pricey, we spend about $165 on a couples massage and that’s with using our spa coupon. (I took one of their spa pricing books if you want to know a price just send me a message). The glass bottom boat was worth it! My husband wasn’t sure at first but loved every minute of it!
This place was amazing and so much more than we could have ever wanted, you will not be disappointed with Secrets!
