“Amazing Honeymoon! And tips for your stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2012

My husband and I just got back from Secrets Wild Orchid and it was absolutely wonderful! We went for our honeymoon from July 9-15, 2012. Here are a few tips for you either getting ready or not sure yet if this is the place to go! Check-in was pretty easy we got off the bus to “Welcome Home,” and cold towels and drinks. Our room wasn’t quite ready so we had lunch at Oceana while we waited. Our room was amazing. It had a big comfortable king size bed, plenty of room for all our things, and a great big bathroom (the doors were frosted, but it wasn’t a big deal). We also read many things about how hot the rooms got, we did not have that problem our room was always cool if not cold! We would go down to the pool and put towels on the chairs we wanted for the day (usually by the pool) since the hotel was not at capacity this probably wasn’t necessary, but we wanted a prime spot for the day. Once we had picked our chairs we would go to the World Café for the buffet breakfast. We would wear bathing suits and cover-ups. Buffet offered the “normal” breakfast buffet: eggs (scrambled, omelets made to order, hard boiled, etc.), bacon, pancakes, potatoes, hash browns, breads, lots of fruit, cereal, cheese, the list goes on and on. They also have a lunch buffet with pastas, burgers, sandwiches, jerk chicken, etc. We would spend most of our day at the pool or beach. We ordered lots of drinks at the Sugar Reef swim-up bar. You MUST try the Dirty Banana that Miss Karen makes its delicious and the Five Star from Leo. You also have to make sure you have chicken from the Jerk Chicken cart its so good!!
As for the restaurants I am an extremely picky eater and I found something at every restaurant. The only one we did not try was Blue Mountain the Jamaican restaurant only because we didn’t think we would like it. You can find the menus to all the restaurants either right by the Rendezvous Bar in the lobby or outside the World Café. Here is the break down:
Oceana: We ate lunch and dinner here. For lunch they have a salad bar and wraps and burgers. Swimsuits and cover-ups are fine. For dinner it turned into a seafood restaurant. Shirts and shorts are fine, it says no flip-flops, but we both wore them with no problems.
Bordeaux: We had dinner here it was really good! We noticed here that there was a couple in front of us the woman had a dress on and the man a nice shirt and shorts we saw the hostess look at what he was wearing and she told them it would be a half hour wait. We walked up and I was wearing a dress and my husband was wearing long khakis and a polo and we got right in. Usually if you are wearing shorts they will seat you outside, but the wait might be longer. Also, sometimes it’s nicer to sit outside because most of the restaurants are not air-conditioned.
El Patio: Dinner here was also good! Dress shorts and shirts are fine.
Himitsu: This was our best and favorite dinner! We sat at the hibachi table, which you have to have reservations for. You can make those right outside the World Café in the morning. Don’t wait until the last minute because they go fast! They serve you soup, sushi, vegetables, chicken, steak, and shrimp!
Portofino: Was another one of our favorites we ate there twice. We preferred to sit outside because most of the performances were right next to it so we had pretty good seats! Long pants and shirts are recommended, but my husband wore shorts.
Seaside grill: This is located at St. James pool. A little bit heavier than Oceana for lunch, but still really good! Swimsuits and cover-ups were fine.
At night they do have ice cream by the coffee bar! No one told us this and we found it by accident one night!
They provide you with The Sundial every night at turn down. It tells you all about the next days events, weather, drink of the day, etc.
The only things we spent money on are tips (we gave $2-3 for dinner or drinks), the spa, and a glass bottom boat tour. The spa is a bit pricey, we spend about $165 on a couples massage and that’s with using our spa coupon. (I took one of their spa pricing books if you want to know a price just send me a message). The glass bottom boat was worth it! My husband wasn’t sure at first but loved every minute of it!
This place was amazing and so much more than we could have ever wanted, you will not be disappointed with Secrets!

The grounds at Wild Orchid are very beautiful and well maintained. The restaurants are clean and there was a variety of food which we enjoyed. We would definitely recommend a reservation at the Hibachi restaurant as the food was excellent and it was a fun experience. Each day there is a variety of events and activities to participate in. The entertainment team was great getting everyone involoved and Kemeshia and Bruce were very fun to play beach volleyball with. We also would recommend the bike tour with Isaac and Carlious through Montego Bay...they were informative about the area and bring your camera for a few photo ops and some money to sample the local fruits. We did the Cool Runnings tour to Dunn's River Falls which was also great!
This trip was our second to an all-inclusive resort and we would definitely recommend taking a trip here! It was the perfect balance of fun and relaxation!

The property is very nice and the pictures are exactly the way the property looks. Overall it was a great trip and a nice resort.

PROS:
Property is very nice. Beach is a good size so that you have some room without everyone being on top of each other, all inclusive is very nice since you can grab a drink whenever (beach service) or grab some food. Hotel rooms were nice and clean. Beds are unbelievably comfortable. The nightly entertainment was very good.

The opportunity to relax and enjoy the island charm is "no problem, mon!"

CONS
My biggest disappointment (overall) was the food quality [although like most reviews, the jerk chicken is very good]. I consider myself pretty picky regarding food quality however, and would liken the food to Applebees or Chili's quality. Also, dairy is poorly refrigerated. We would routinely see milk set out on a table all day or cheese would be molten.

The staff was courteous, but we ocassionally felt forgotten. Usually a call to the desk would get our room cleaned or mini bar re-stocked. The mini-bar was pretty said. It had a couple beers, water and soda - nothing else, very basic. Also room service (a nice feature) was very basic for breakfast (continental items like muffins and bagels) no cooked food like eggs. You needed to go to the buffet for warm food. The room service lunch and dinner menu had more, but could only be ordered at certain times.

The restaurants would usually only open for dinner, considerably limiting dining options for breakfast and lunch. So although they have about 8 restaurants, there is ONLY 1 for breakfast, 3 for lunch and then the rest open up for dinner.

COST
When we went I wanted to try to get an idea of budget and could not find any cost info anywhere, so I've included a few prices that you can expect to pay.

Taxi - I heard as low as $20, but they see a tourist coming a mile away and you typically get funneled into the taxi line at the airport. We paid $35 to the resort and $40 going back. Make sure you agree on the fare prior to riding. I felt the cost was kind of high and you may be able to get cheaper, but you should definitely not pay more than $40, since some cabs actually publish $40 as the fare.

Tipping - I was under the impression when we booked the hotel that it was all-inclusive and specifically included tips. However, I noticed that tipping was around 50/50 (half of the guests did tip and half did not). It never seemed mandatory and service did not suffer if you did not tip. Also, the resort does not specifically prohibit tipping. Some employees did work very hard and deserved a tip, therefore it is a good idea to at least budget a few dollars daily for those employees. It also comes in handy is a large group is at the bar and you want some attention from the bartender, a tip could go a long way.

Seaside Dinner - The Seaside dinner is extra. The cost is variable, but upon check-in you can get coupons from the concierge giving you $60 off. The cost is $200 ($140 after coupon) for two. You pick your courses from the menu. The food remains the same but the cost goes up depending on the wine you choose (up to $500). If you get the basic wine, the cost is $140 after coupon. As a side note, if your palate is seriously considering a $300+ bottle of wine, your palate will most definitely be disappointed with the all around food quality (see cons above).

Spa - Is extra. Treatments are pretty expensive, usually starting around $150 and up for most 50 minute treatments. Again, you can get a coupon from the concierge to shave off $20-$40.

Other helpful tips:
Computers - WiFi is not in the rooms (unless you upgrade to the vacation club). WiFi costs $15 daily if you want it in your room or 50 cents a minute in the computer lab.

Calling - International calls are $3/minute or local are $1/ a minute [keep that cost in mind if you end up buying a calling card, since you need to make a local call to connect to the calling card]. Most cell phone companies charge around $2 a minute and the island does have CDMA (cell) service.

All inclusive - Begins upon arrival at the resort, not just at check-in. Therefore if you are arriving early or staying late, you are covered as far as food and drinks are concerned.

Upgrades and Vacation Club - We originally had planned to stay at St James, but upon arrival were "upgraded" to Wild Orchid. Wild Orchid is more convenient to restaurants and entertainment and did seem newer, but otherwise am not sure what we missed at St. James. They also offer a vacation club which basically seems like a timeshare (but without the label). Upon arrival, the concierge will try to sign you up to meet for breakfast to "show" you the vacation club, which you then may (later) upgrade to. Sounded a lot like a "timeshare roundup" and we did not want to waste our vacation time so I'm not entirely sure what they had to offer.

I could find no fault in this property....and I am a "picky" person that looks at even the smallest of details in my room, and the rest of the resort. I wish I could have stayed longer, and enjoyed some more of the wonderful food offerings at the Wild Orchid.

Room Tip: The Wild Orchid side of Secrets are where all the restaurants and entertainment is located.

I stayed here on a timeshare exchange. My boyfriend and I were supposed to go (it is a couples resort) but we broke up and I took a friend instead. We scored a room with a balcony right on the beach with two queen beds and had a great time. The resort is beautiful and the food and service were great. We went to the spa and the massages and services were excellent. I would definitely go back, with or without a man:)

My husband and I booked our Jamaica vacation for our 8 year anniversary. We couldn't have chosen a better hotel! Secrets was so close to the airport; upon arrival, we had a hassle free check in - The pools were so nice! We loved the resort. The restaurants were SIMPLY AMAZING. Although there was a wait for the restaurants, the wait was well worth it. The Chinese restaurant was great! if you can catch the chef show, do it! They were very funny and interactive. Our favorite was the french restaurant, we had an opportunity to dine outside, SIMPLY AN EXPERIENCE! Candle light, breeze! Aaaah! wish we were back. The view was spectacular, mountains on one side w/ ocean in the other.
The staff was great, always smiling "Yah man' - e'veritin' aiirrie'! Make sure you make it a point to go to the shows (especially the marriage show) My husband and I had a chance to participate, and it was a complete riot! Not to mention if you have a few drinks in you, you are more compliant in doing completely embarrassing things in front of an entire crowd.
To conclude, our experience was amazing, the hotel was simply beautiful, restaurants delicious and staff very pleasant!

This property was absolutely gorgeous! The staff was incredible....they provided excellent customer service. The entertainment staff was also great! The nightly entertainment was phenomenal.....especially on the night of the 4th of July. I highly recommend visitor s to try the jerk chicken it is provided every day around noon. The guy comes around with a cart and serves the chicken....it is delicious!!!! The room was very nice and clean. We had the oceanfront and it was soooooo nice to look out every morning to see the sunrise over the ocean. The food at the restaurants was ok. I wish the resort would have provided more authentic Jamaican cuisine instead of French, American, Mexican and Japanese cuisines. The service at the restaurants at night was typically very slow. Breakfast was always good. We hired a driver to take us to an authentic Jamaican restaurant called Scotchies.....OMG!! The food was delicious!! He also took us to the Rose Hall shopping district and the Rose Hall Plantation and some other shops. Very nice. We went on the all day excursion to climb the Dunn s river waterfall, we went tubing down a beautiful river, went to a private beach party where they had entertainment and food, then to a shopping area. This excursion was worth the money!! It was great! I would highly recommend staying at this property.
