“Seawinds Family All Inclusive Beach Day - Carnival Crusie Excursion”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2012

Carnival Cruise Line uses the Beach Club area of this resort for this excursion. it is located right next to the Sunset Beach Resort. It is a two minite ride from the port. they provide grayhound style air-conditioned buses for transport. There is a DJ and pool side entertainment. The Food is very good and the resort is first class.

From April 9th through the 13th, my wife and I spent five days and four nights in Jamaica at Secrets Wild Orchid. Or stay could not have been any better or more enjoyable.

The room (a mini suite) was spacious and clean. Housekeeping staff seemed to take great pride in making sure our stay in the room was comfortable. Everyday the soft driinks, water and beer in the refrigerator was restocked, bed was turned down and towels/linen were replaced.

Dinners at all of the resturants were cooked to order (no buffets). Wait staff were professional, pleasant and always made you feel welcome. In addition all of the resturants had a dress code for dinner.

Swimming pools (that's right there were several) were never over crowded and seating around the pool was not a problem.

Will definately return.

Room Tip: Request a mini suit with ocean view.

This is a very nice resort that offers a wide variety of activites, dining options and amenities. The rooms are modern and comfortable, and the service was generally very good. My wife and I have stayed at all-inclusive resorts across the Caribean, and Wild Orchard definately had the widest variety of guests as well. We met young honeymooners, couples in their 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's! There were families attending weddings and several corporate events. If you wanted to sleep on the beach, you could find a quite spot, and if you wanted to play beach vollyball and listen to music, there are a couple games every day. Lunch and dinner offered a good variety of options, and room service food was good as well. The location is a huge bonus, being 15 minutes from the airport and less than 30 minutes from the best golf course on the island - White Witch at Rose Hall. We played twice. If you are a golfer, this is the course to play in Jamaica. To ensure a smooth check in, be sure to bring a paper copy of your reservation confirmation. If you don't have the paper, you will start your vacation with a dose of frustration (I didn't have the paper!).

Room Tip: The rooms in the Preferred building have the best views and are a little quieter.

Wife and I stayed here in March 2012. We have stayed at 8 all-inclusives in the past few years and ranked Wild Orchid 1st overall. We're big beach fans, and I will say this wasn't the number 1 beach, BUT it was very nice. This part of Jamaica doesn't have the fine very white powdery sands we've experienced elsewhere, and I only note this for those beach zealots out there. Breakdown of each part follows.

The Room: We stayed in a preferred club room due to our membership with UVC. We had a swim up suite. The room was excellent, pretty much the same as non-preferred rooms. All rooms' balconies face the ocean. So often reviewers say you HAVE to stay preferred. Not true at any of the AmResort properties at which we have stayed. ALL the rooms are excellent. As far as the swim up suites; the pool which is off your patio does not connect to the main pool, it is near the preferred pool. The preferred pool is a bit small anyway. It was our first swim up room and would be nice if you like to float on a raft in front of your room, or if you have a group with you, it gives you a common place to hang out. (our neighbors did this everyday and seemed to enjoy that aspect.)

The pools:
As stated, the preferred pool is a bit small, but with plenty of seating around it. Very quiet, no music, no games. The main pool had music, the area around it was full, but finding a lounger was possible. For some reason, not many people were in the pool. The main pool did NOT connect to the section with the swim up bar. The water around the swim up bar was kinda deep for hanging around the bar.(just over 4 feet) Other resorts the swim up bar is a great gathering place, not so here, at least this particular week.

The beach:
Nice beach area, plenty of room to lay around on chairs and such. The swimming areas were nice, very calm due to the "lagoon" style design. Snorkeling is available right off beach, but bring your own gear. The sports shack has gear but only for the guided snorkel tour, which they had scheduled twice a day(included of course).

One complaint about the beach and pool area, and this is actually directed at the patrons more than the resort. The "reserving" of lounge chairs. THERE IS NO NEED TO DO THIS IF EVERYONE WOULD STOP DOING IT. I watched from our room a man go out every morning and set up his family's stuff at 8am, but then not come to the chairs until 12 or 1pm at best. This happens at most resorts where we have stayed. Its flat out rude. The resort has signs posted against this practice. They need to do a better job enforcing it and removing towels from chairs.

Restaurants:
ALL were excellent. Not one bad dinner, plenty of variety on the buffets. The food was amazing. I enjoyed the Blue Mountain dinners the best. On Friday night they have a surf and turf buffet available. The lobster was the Caribbean lobster(spiny lobster), and I like this much better than "Maine" lobster. The steak was incredible, as well as the other dishes.

Staff:
The staff at this resort very the most friendly I have experienced in the Caribbean and Mexico, and that goes for the wait staff, bar staff, housekeeping and check-in. We had one incident which was entirely our fault ( we got locked out on our patio as soon as we went into the room, keys inside and the inside lock turned). The resort manager is the ONLY person with the master key(which is good to know), and when the inside lock is set no regular key can open door. We did have another issue when our dock lock's battery died, but the staff was there in 10 minutes to fix this.

While here the week in March the resort was at 93% capacity, but you never felt crowded, and there was very little wait for dinner. We joined the Vacation Club because we stayed at a few of the parent companies properties and like they're resort model the best. Secrets Wild Orchid did not disappoint.

Room Tip: All rooms face the ocean. One small problem with 3 or 4 rooms, there will be a palm tree blocking t...

My husband and I just returned from a nine night stay at Secrets Wild Orchid, MoBay. We have visited several Caribbean islands over the years. This was our first experience at an all-inclusive. First the Good: The resort is just two years old. The entire resort was beautiful. Lovely manicured grounds with beautiful flowers. All extremely clean and well maintained. You would have trouble finding a cigarette butt or gum wrapper on the ground. Beach and pool areas also clean and lovely. Room comfortable and immaculate. Housekeeping excellent. Staff are very friendly and helpful. The "My Pleasures" however begin to become tiring and put-on....even patronizing at times. Clearly the staff training is very scripted and it becomes artificial. Never the less, they were helpful at all times.

Nice shops and gift shop well supplied with basics if you forget something.

Less than Good: The food was VERY disappointing. There were many venues from jerk chicken on the beach to the nicer "dinner" restaurants, all in comfortable walking distance anywhere on the resort. Buffet breakfast at World Cafe had many offerings from omlettes to sweets. More than you could want and good selection. Buffet at World Cafe for lunch also with many offerings. Problem was, everything was just ordinary. The best thing at lunch were the burgers.....really, do you go all the way to Jamaica for a good burger? The dinner restaurants were even more disappointing. I would term this cuisine as "mass-produced gourmet". Had I been at any of these restaurants outside the resort I would not have returned to any of them. Not one dish or meal even approached memorable or worth having again. And everywhere on the resort, unless you are drinking beer, wine or shots be prepared for VERY weak drinks. Yes, there was top shelf alcohol available-just all made with very little alcohol. The mojitos were good- not too sweet, not too tart.

And for the Realy Bad: If you are looking for quiet, perhaps not the best choice. The St. James portion of the resort may be a little quieter as it is further from the venues. We were at Wild Orchids, in a 5th floor room overlooking the pool. There were 4 nights of beach events while we were there, I think once a week is an open beach party for guests, the others were private events. In any case, whether DJ or live band, be prepared for blaring music all evening. Fortunately these wrapped up by 1030 or so. Music through most of the day at the pool. This may be what you like, but if you want quiet you are not going to find it. And for some reason because of the design of the building around the pool, sound traveled with extraordinary clarity. From the 5th floor we could hear the beach showers and pucks on the shuffleboard. Our balcony was nice except there was a light mounted on the wall that could not be turned off. If you want some privacy on the balcony, or just want to watch the world go by after dark, be prepared NOT to have dark. We unscrewed the light bulb on our second day and it was much nicer.
While there are not hawkers on the beach, the resort takes every opportunity to sell you something. At check in they spend a lot of time trying to get you to attend a promotional "breakfast" for their properties. For this pleasure, you get a coupon to the lounge at the airport and express security. We were told this would be helpful as security lines were often 4 hours! We did not find this to be the case, leaving on Saturday afternoon. Though very busy, departing the airport was very efficient. Never the less, we spent considerable time at check in listening to this sales pitch. At 10 PM arrival when you are tired and just want to get to your room....this is a real imposition on an arriving guest trying to be polite. There are countless photographers combing the resort who will take pictures for you, and of course you must pay for them if you want them.
Also folks trolling to sign you up for boat excursions, etc. Overall, not as pesky as the constant interruptions on many beaches in the Caribbean, but still did not expect this. You are also frequently bothered to join the horseshoe tournament, dance instruction, etc. A polit no-thank you was sufficient....but really sometimes I just want to read my book and not be disturbed.

On this trip one of the reasons we chose this resort was because it was adults only. While there were no screaming children, there was MORE than enough loud and drunken noise from the adults. We were frequently awakened at night by people being outragiously loud in the hallways, even ringing our door bell for the heck of it on more than one night. At the pool, because the liquor runs free....well a lot of people get crazy, loud, cursing and making fools of themselves. I expected at least mature adults but at times felt more like it was more like spring break and a college croud. People left empty drinks all over, including glass in the pool area. Early one morning we saw an employee run over a glass on the pool deck with a cart of towels (he didn't see the glass). Don't go barefoot after dark! This is no fault of the resort but it was unexpected. If you're looking for this kind of party atmosphere you will love it. If you are looking for peace and quiet....maybe not so much.
And beyond bad was the air-conditioning in our room. It was hot our check in night but we didn't check in until after 10 PM and figured the A/C just needed some time. The next evening when it was still hot we asked it to be checked. We learned there is a motion sensor in the room. We were told that after a period of no motion being detected, all the power AND the A/C goes OFF. We were hot every night in the room. There is a cieling fan on perpetual "low" because you cannot adjust it. We were told there was nothing that could be done to make the room cooler.

And finally, the Spa. Sadly again just ordinary.

There are many hotels in Jamaica and many extraordinary places in the Caribbean. We had hoped to find another "favorite" place but sadly that was not the case for us and we won't return to Secrets, MoBay.
