My husband and I celebrated our 15th anniversary at Secrets St. James and it left much to be desired. The lobby was extremely crowded during check-in. The first thing we were told is that our room was not ready, but we could "upgrade" to an ocean front preferred room that included a private beach, private pool & private restaurant. We took the bait, paid for an upgrade & were given black, preferred club room keys and given our room number. Next, we were ushered over to the "concierge" to receive our resort coupons. This turned out to be a sales pitch for the resort's version of timeshare. After we refused the tour, all of the friendliness went out of the window. At this point, I just wanted to get to my room. The room was nice with the exception of the rusted lighting fixtures on the balcony and the mildew in the shower area and around the base of the sinks. The room was stocked with slightly less than room temperature drinks. The staff says that the refrigerator is actually just a cooler and not intended to keep the drinks completely cold...go figure. The next day, I happened to walk past the "preferred club" building. I went back to the main lobby and asked about the "upgrade" that I paid for and I was told that I paid for "preferred access" meaning that I had a regular room that was upgraded to ocean front from ocean view and that I was given access to the preferred club amenities. I was really disappointed in the fact that someone could explain it so clearly after I paid for it and not before I paid for it. I asked for the manager. She attempted to rectify the situation by offering me the worst possible room in the preferred club building with two queen beds & absolutely no view. I declined. Eventually, I received a credit for half of what I paid for the upgrade, a bottle of rum & passes to the Club Mobay lounge for departure. I had never been so ready to come home from a vacation. The food was terrible. Most of the restaurants had open buffets accompanied by plenty of flies. For our first lunch at the Seaside Grill, we had to be moved due to an ant infestation all over the table when I sat down. Several days we planned dinners at certain restaurants that were listed on the Sundial (the daily newsletter) as being open, but when we got there, the restaurants were closed due to private parties. The hallways on the third floor were never lit at night. There were at least 5 light fixtures on the 40 foot hallway, but none were lit. There was little entertainment...mostly just nightly bands. And, most of the staff was unfriendly. They did not greet you or smile. No excuse me, no good morning, nothing. I may be just used to better service. There were some exceptions....our luggage attendant (Joseph) was the friendliest person that we met there. His smile was contagious & he brightened my day every time I saw him. One bartender (Germon,,,I think) was great. Other than that, the vacation was a bust. I'm sorry I "celebrated" 15 years at this place. I will not be returning & I certainly will not recommend it.
