First, if you have the opportunity to fly an airline other then Air Jamaica fly the other airline. We flew Air Jamaica because we received free vouchers last year due to an overbooked flight and it was a huge mistake. Our 7:35 AM flight was cancelled because of mechanical problems. Later we found out this plane had these problems the previous day causing it to be cancelled both days. Everyone at Air Jamaica handled the situation incompetently. Finally, at 11:30 AM they told us a new plane was on the way from Kingston to take us to Jamaica and it would be here at 5:00 PM. When that plane arrived they told us it only had coach and first class passengers were out of luck. We did not arrive at SMB until 10:00 PM. Looking back I wish I just paid for tickets on Continental and threw out the AJ vouchers. Instead we spent the entire day at Newark Airport because Air Jamaica did not fix their plane for two days or make arrangements for a new plane. I learned my lesson the hard way and will NEVER fly Air Jamaica again regardless of how much money they try to give me in vouchers.
As soon as we got to SMB our vacation was outstanding. We have been to Negril and Ochios Rios and it was so much easier and more relaxing to be at your resort in 5 minutes. After going to SMB I will never take the 2-hour voyage to other parts of the island again. Most importantly the short distance to the airport maximizes your time at the resort the day you leave. If you have the 2-hour ride from Negril your last day is wasted traveling.
The airplanes going over the resort are not a reason to stay somewhere else. The resort is at the very end of the runway on the side that planes take off only. We actually liked seeing the planes take off because it made us happy that we were not on one and had more time at the resort. On a busy day maybe 5-10 planes take off, it’s not an issue at all.
The staff at the resort is first-rate. A previous review said they felt pressure to tip, I did not feel this way but these people were so genuinely nice that I did take care of some of them.
Being from the NJ/NY area we know our expectations regarding food are high, that being said the food at SMB is good, not great, but you do have a lot of dining options with the 3 Sandals nearby. We do not expect gourmet food in the Jamaica so we are rarely let down.
I would suggest upgrading to a room with a beach view. There are some rooms that are at the back of the resort that have no view at all.
The gift shop sells Cuban cigars however the ones I bought from them were fake which is very common in the Caribbean. They do have Dominican cigars that are good and Royal Jamaicans, which are good also.
I researched this site for help on picking SRC or SMB; thanks to all the reviews we picked the right one. SRC is quiet and much more laid back with an older crowd, and a small beach. SMB is much more active, has a younger crowd and the resort has an extra large beach.
We will be back to SMB!
