“Welcoming staff, serene setting make you feel at home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2009

For the second consecutive year we have spent our winter vacation at Coyaba, a beautifully designed yet un-fussy treasure spot in Montego Bay. There are only 50 units so intimacy and lots of personal attention are assured. Accommodations are superb. We requested and were given the same room as last year. While Coyaba's is not a night club atmosphere (a plus for me), it has appropriate (read: "not late night and not blaringly loud)) entertainment for guests. Non-motorized watersports and tennis are on site as are an exercize room and spa facilities. Each of Coyaba's 3 restaurants has its own personality with staff alternating among each. Guests really get to know the always-pleasant staff. This includes grounds/beach crew (one of whom came up to me on my first return day with "I'm happy to see you back with us"). Management/staff relations are such that 99% of staff were the same from last year...a telling indicator. On our last day I mentioned feeling so at home at Coyaba. Response was, "They make us feel at home." I've been vacationing in the Caribbean since the '60s and can easily state that Coyaba is a rare treasure. ----RW, Connecticut, USA

We just got back from a nine-day vacation at Coyaba. This was our third Jamaica trip, and we wanted to avoid the long drive that we endured when we visited Ocho Rios. Tripadvisor reviews sold us on Coyaba which was a short taxi ride from the airport. This resort was everything we hoped for—outstanding service, a beautiful oceanview room, a place to relax. On our first morning we ordered a bottle of champagne along with room service breakfast and toasted our 30th anniversary with Mimosas. The spacious balcony of our Junior Ocean Suite was the perfect setting. The breakfast tray that Fitzroy brought us even included a vase of tropical flowers. Most days we had continental breakfast in our room. One morning we ate in the Vineyard. The banana pecan pancakes and the omelet that we had there were very good, but too much food for us on a daily basis.

We had our anniversary dinner at an outside table at the Vineyard. The Vineyard is open every night except the three nights when theme dinners are served outside the Docks Bar and Grill. Polo Grounds is open every night. It has its own menu, but you can also order off the Vineyard menu.

Every morning we went to the beach. Allie or Bobby would set us up with towels and lounge chairs under one of the thatched shelters where we spent our mornings reading, watching sea birds and pinching each other to see if we were dreaming. Around 11:00, Ian, Elleston or Gladstone would come by and take orders for drinks from the Docks Bar. After the rum drinks (usually a Rumrunner and a Jamaican Delight), we would walk over to Docks, the open-air restaurant, for lunch with a Red Stripe beer. After lunch a hammock by the beach was an inviting spot to drift off while gazing up at palm trees and listening to the ocean. What a tough life! Our most ambitious activities were walks on the dock and taking a pedal boat out to the reef. The Water Sports guys were great!

While we were at the beach, Hyacinth would clean our room and fill the ice bucket. We’ve never seen better housekeeping service. Turndown service was excellent too. The property maintenance was exceptional everywhere you looked. We liked everything about Coyaba, but most of all the service from the outstanding staff. Besides those already mentioned, Alex impressed us, as did Kaydrian, Ingrid and Jason. Our favorite bartender was Ian who makes a great margarita. All of the servers were good, but Barbara was the very best. We were especially grateful to Michael McGhie, one of the managers, who surprised us with a piece of an aloe plant to treat a sunburn.

Some tripadviser reviewers recommend the all-inclusive plan. We don’t normally eat three big meals a day so we didn’t choose that plan. We ordered as much food and drinks as we wanted and were satisfied with the decision. Some guests who were on the plan told us they liked the convenience. A tip regarding tipping: We took along a stack of one and five dollar bills for tips. Though none of the staff acted like they expected tips, they certainly deserved them for the wonderful service.

If you’re looking for a romantic getaway or a place to relax and unwind, Coyaba is that place.

Wife and I celebrated our 25th anniversary at Coyaba. Weather was perfect, beach is pristine, place is immaculate, staff are overly accomodating, Alex (Mgr) is excellent, food was okay but waaaay overpriced, room was very nice, activities are very weak, but Sonia will gladly find you something to do if you're bored. There's free WiFi, but I didn't take along my PC, and wanted to check my email; the cost was $30/hour!?

Our big issue was with the country, not the resort. We enjoy getting out and seeing the country, but that was nearly impossible. The place (and all others) are fortified compounds that are quite safe ... if you don't leave. It was reported in the local paper that a couple of cruise lines have removed Jamaica from their ports of call.

Cab fare was a minimum $40 round trip to anywhere, where you are constantly accosted to buy any and everything (clothes, trinkets, cabs, weed, sex). Even on the end of the dock, surfboard paddlers will invade your space.

We chose not to buy the all-inclusive hoping to sample the country's cuisine, but venturing out for food was an expensive and sometimes frightening proposition. Scothies (superb food) and Burger King are a 15 minute walks in opposite directions, but only if you're very brave. We actually heard a pedestrian being hit and killed on the highway during the morning rush ... terrifying.

We would highly recommend Coyaba, but only if you're ~not~ planning on leaving the stockade.

My boyfriend and I just went there for vacation for 4 days. This was our second time back at Coyaba. The first time we went there was in 2004, and we always wanted to come back.
This is such a great place to go if you really want to just get away and do nothing. Although the hotel was full this time, I really felt like we had the place to ourselves. The pool and beach were never overcrowded, and the people that stay there are usually quiet and respectful.
In a nutshell, here are positives and negatives:
-close to the airport
-beautiful beach and pool area
-relaxing and quiet
-tennis courts, basketball court, pool table area if you get bored on the beach
-watersports available (kayaking, etc.)
-small gym, but useable if you really want to work out
-management is very responsive to needs
-other hotels near by- ritz, etc if you want a change of scenery
Areas of improvement:
-mixed drinks had no alcohol and expensive- go for the wine
-food is just "OK"- but the chicken was really good!
-service in general at the 2 restaurants and 3 bars were unreliable- at times we got ignored but then if you forgot to sign your bill they would chase you down
- it is on a busy road so you really can't leave the resort by foot and it is a bit scary if you do. stick to taking taxis
One more thing about the climate- this is a positive thing for me but some people may not like it- it is often very windy on the beach- but on a hot day it feels great but can get a bit chilly at night.
I love this place and will go back again- although this time we might BYOB! hope this was helpful!

We stayed here for a couple of nights on our way home after having spent time in Negril and Kingston. It was the most expensive place we stayed in for the entire month in Jamaica and it was honestly a bit of a let down.
The food was absolutely diabolic! From lunch to dinner it was terrible with cold, half cooked burgers or just plain overcooked dinners or chips which had not been cooked enough. We found ourselves trying to order the most simple things as to make it easy to cook for the chef(s) but to no avail.
The entertainment in the evenings was so bad that it was hilarious. Coyaba had hired these local entertainers to come and sing - not local tradition, but crap cover versions of your worst nightmare songs. It was so loud and sucked so hard its difficult to imagine. All we wanted was just to sit outside under the stars, chill out and chat with each other. Instead we couldn't hear each other talking for the noise of these crap entertainers. Perhaps we would have appreciated it if we were in our 70s - hard at hearing!
The premises are ok. The beach is nothing to write home about - go to Negril or elsewhere if that's what you're after. The place was clean and most of the staff was friendly. We wanted to go out on a boat - snorkeling or diving, but was told that they had no space for us. Bummer. We wanted to go sailing on their little sailboat but it seemed to be a problem that they would have to go with us. Really strange! The water sport staff seemed really lazy and not friendly - perhaps they just had a bad couple of days!

We probably wouldn't recommend this place - we would recommend people to go to Negril instead and stay in Coyabas sister resort Country Country. Now, that's a nice place!

My husband and I spent a week at Coyaba with his parents over Thanksgiving. Usually we spend the week in Mexico but this year decided to try somewhere new! We chose Coyaba based upon reviews from this site. Generally, we prefer to stay in smaller hotels, so Coyaba sounded like a perfect fit.

We booked two ocean front junior suites and were very happy with the room...it was gorgeous! High ceilings, four poster bed, large balcony, nice sitting area, lots of windows, newly updated bathroom, tropical decor (felt like a Tommy Bahama ad), and VERY clean! We did have some bugs in the room but nothing we couldn't handle with a shoe. :) It was on the 3rd floor (no elevator) which was a little much by the end of the week for my father in law's bad knees.

I HIGHLY recommend the meal plan, we never left the hotel and could eat as much and whenever we wanted. Late in the afternoon we sometimes had pizza after lunch (good pizza) and a few times my husband and his father ate a second dinner (lobster, I think). We enjoy cocktails on vacation and it was nice never having to worry about how much we spent. Also, it gave us the opportunity to try out the bartender's 'special' drink of the day (each bartender has their own specialty...ask!). The only thing we paid out of pocket for was champagne for breakfast mimosas, and it was very reasonable. We really enjoyed the food, though sometimes it was inconsistent at dinner (temperature-wise or seemed past its prime). A few desserts were disappointing. They did have a Thanksgiving dinner special which we enjoyed.

Didn't use the gym (open air and warm!) or spa (seemed as pricey as at home) but did go snorkeling off the pier. TONS of fish underneath the dock, it felt like swimming in a fish tank. The beach is small but quiet and private. The hot tub was nice as it was a little chilly during our trip. Pool is on the smaller side but served its purpose just fine.

The BEST part of our trip was the staff, what a great group of people! Anything you ask is 'no problem, mon'...and they really mean it. Behind the formality that comes with excellent training is a warmth and friendliness that is easy to fall in love with. Take the time to get to know them.

If we have the chance we will return.

The Coyaba was a departure from the other hotels we had stayed at in Jamaica because it was on a much smaller scale. When we arrived, the people at the front desk who greeted us were so nice. They were really helpful and the bellman carried all our stuff up 3 floors to our fabulous corner room. The room was AMAZING. It had cathedral ceilings and the balcony was so large and fabulous. We had a great time in the room. It had a 4 poster bed, double sinks that were separate from the bathroom, and a really nice home feeling.

The pool wasn't very large, but people seemed to enjoy it. The private beach was also really mellow with the palm umbrellas that gave it a nice touch. My favorite part other than the room was dock. We had a great time under the stars there. It was so fun.

They had a tea time there and they had lots of great little snacks and choices of drinks. I was really lucky because Saturday evening in their little conference room, they held a Catholic mass. I was really pleased that I didn't have to go too far for that.

My time at the Coyaba was such a great way to end our trip in Jamaica. Unfortunately my friend was let go from the resort unfairly.

  • Liked — Room, dock, nice people
  • Disliked — Not having many food choices, the unfair firing of my friend, not near anything, small pool no activities
