“Awesome vacation !”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2013

We spent the week of January 6-13th at Sunset Beach and Loved it ! The resort never seemed crowded because of the many swimming and sunbathing area options, at times it felt like our private beach.. The food was always good especially the Asian restaurant was our favorite, we couldn't get enough of the jerk chicken either. The staff went above and beyond for you and really made the stay seem extra special ! They worked hard at special theme dinners and the entertainment was great every night of the week .. We took our two college kids and they loved it too because their were always options from the disco, or Pier 1 or margaritaville bus trips leaving at 11 pm from the resort. The rooms could use some updating and repairs but they were clean and you spent so little time there anyway. As a side trip we did the Martha brae bamboo rafting tour and we had a blast, we got lucky and had an awesome guide named Dailey who shared so much knowledge of the Jamaican culture with us and took his time to explain the different habitat. We also did the 3 hour city tour with Damion who was outstanding ! We all fell in love with MOBAY and can't wait to go back..

Room Tip: I put the rooms at average because they could use some updates and repairs.. we had to change rooms...

Just returned from Sunset in MoBay and our family (husband, myself and 2 boys ages 13 and 8) loved it. The beach was great, staff friendly, room was clean, quiet and the AC was working very well. We stayed in Tower A on 10th floor - no noise complaints at all, but would not recommend below 6th floor as you can hear the disco / entertainment at night. Housekeeping was accommodating if you needed more towels, blankets etc.
Excursion desk extremely helpful, especially Patricia. Front desk not so friendly, but OK.
In BananaWalk buffet we loved having Omar every morning, he was great with kids.
Only thing we really disliked was the Al-A-Carts. They were gross and sub-par and I recommend sticking with buffet although by day 7 you can get a bit weary of it.
Kids loved the pool, water slides and Kelly's scuba diving, snorkelling and glass bottom boat rides. We did plenty of free snorkelling also.
Evening entertainment was great for kids, not so much for adults, but that is not why we choose Sunset...for the kids! Loved the different dinner locations and the BBQ, steel band and acrobatic show.
For our first all-inclusive vacation we really liked it and will be returning (as soon as we save up again) in 2014 I hope! Definitely not a 5 star, but great family-centred resort.
Highly recommended for families!

Room Tip: Bayview, Tower A, the higher the floor the less night noise from entertainment and disco. We had 10...

We were at Sunset Beach Christmas Day through to New Years Day. This was the first time to this resort and the first time for me to Jamaica. We had two rooms that were ajoined in the East wing of the resort. We very much enjoyed where our rooms were, as they weren't near the loud part of the resort, you were close to good beach area and you had the beautiful green courtyard right outside your balcony. We ate at the Italian and Asian a la carte's and really enjoyed the Asian. We weren't overly impressed with the Italian, but it wasn't bad. The buffet always had great options for supper, even if the lunch menu was boring by the end of the week. The entertainment was great and we loved it all, especially the New Years Eve party. The staff was great and we really liked our cleaning lady! The beach isn't perfect, definitely bring water shoes, but it was very nice. The area by the beach bar is the best to swim in and the rest of it is perfect for snorkeling! The loungers on the beach don't fill up too fast, which was very nice. The resort definitely has a family vibe to it. Overall, I was quite impressed and would definitely recommend the resort to any family but I probably would chose somewhere else to go if I was going with just a bunch of mid 20's friends!

Room Tip: The rooms in the two level areas, away from the main towers of the resort, are amazing!

I wouldn't say it was an outstanding experience but it was definitely worth the $909 all inclusive deal from redtag.ca ... The view wasn't so pleasant but we were rarely in our rooms unless we had to change/shower/sleep.

Try to book your excursions outside of the resort if you're on a budget. We booked our excursion with Barett Adventures with an awesome tour guide named Luxley and the time and money spent was definitely worth it.

Cabs from the hotel are also decent priced. Just make sure to BARGAIN...even for the "good stuff" always BARGAIN! There's a bus at 11pm every night that takes you to the night clubs: Pier 1 and Margarita Ville (there's a water slide there so wear some swimwear during the day)

Other than that. The beachfront is awesome...the pools are awesome...the water park was AWESOME!! Definitely a family-friendly and/or couples' resorts.

We are however disappointed that your experience was not all that it could have been so you could say that your experience was an outstanding one. Please know that we take the safety and security of our guests and staff very seriously and so, all our taxi operators that are located on property have been vetted to ensure that they have all the required licences and certification in place to cover any eventualities. We cannot say the same for what is offered elsewhere.

Again, we thank you wholeheartedly for recommending us as good value for a family-friendly and/or couples vacation and hope that you will visit us again and allow us the opportunity to surpass your expectations.

We just returned from a week at Sunset Beach, this was our third year in a row going to Jamaica and first time at this particular resort. The resort is way better then I was expecting and far better then the sister resort in Ohio Rios but I did get sick from either the food or water on 3 different nights which didn't make for fun - thank god for Immodium!
The beach is not nice, rocks everywhere and once you pass the rocks .... seaweed!
I can say that the staff and management try very hard to make everyone feel welcome, the entertainment was good and lots of activities in evening and day.
If I didn't get sick , i'd possibly think of returning

Dear Tracey2327,

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback regarding your stay with us. We really appreciate all the positive highlights regarding our staff, the entertainment and daily activities.

The management and staff is committed to having all our guests enjoy a uniquely Jamaican 5-star service that guarantees that they will return for a future stay with us.

We are very sorry to hear that you got sick during your stay. Our water is generally very safe to drink; however, we do ensure that bottled water is available at our gift shop, ‘Ting ‘n Ting’. Our Food & Beverage team takes pride in presenting healthy and nutritious menu options to satisfy the palate of all our very discerning guests who all have varied culinary expectations and so we are disheartened that your vacation was not all that it could have been and hope that you will reconsider visiting us again.

We note your comments about our beach and while it may not be as nice, we do boast the best snorkeling experience in this area which has been mentioned in many reviews. This is because our resort is located in a marine reserve park and our beach is protected as such. Unfortunately, we are not allowed to remove the seaweed which is very important to our marine life.

We however have three distinct beach areas and a private au natural beach that is located to the east of the property which we hope that you had gotten an opportunity to experience. We are aware that some areas may be uncomfortable when walking bare feet and water shoes would be ideal.

Once again, thank you for choosing Sunset Beach Resort, Spa & Waterpark and we certainly look forward to having you stay with us once again.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2013

Our 7 day stay started with an upgrade to an ocean front room on the 10th floor of tower B. Waking each morning to seeing the ocean as the first vision of the day was amazing! We went as a couple to this resort. Since we were not on a honeymoon or with a need for a very quiet time away, we were happy with the diversity of Sunset Resort in terms of families, couples, and even people traveling alone. Most all of the guests we met were from Canada or the Midwest. Some points of interest:

Staff: everyone is very attentive and friendly. Take the time to talk with the staff and learn about their lives and culture. Wendy and Ernest by the pool definitely had the the most impact on our experience - not because they served drinks :) but because of their conversations and friendliness. It felt like we had known them for years. Clinton is awesome at the omelette stattion - don't let any long line deter you as he is a master at keeping 6 pans going at any one time and keeps the line moving.

Watersports: We never experienced a wait for the kayaks or paddleboats. Bring your own snorkeling equipment, otherwise you can only go with a group three times a day. At the waterpark, the waterslide is a bit rough as you can feel the ridges on your back as you go down. Perhaps a child does not feel it as much as an adult. Overall - the waterpark area is a nice area for families with young children.

Food: We enjoyed the various foods on the buffet and the opportunity to try jamaican cooking. It is easy to eat very healthy at this resort. We enjoyed the asian restaurant the best of the ala carte choices. We went to the Italian restaurant twice and still did not think it warranted the "best" restaurant at the resort rating I have read here. Perhaps it is because we are from the NY/NJ area which has awesome italian restaurants to compare. Overall however, it was not bad in any way. And, as with the Asian restaurant - service was excellent.

Entertainment: We really enjoyed the BBQ with the steel band playing and thought it was the best night in terms of entertainment at the resort. (I would appreciate if someone would comment on the name of the band.) The guest/staff talent show was good and the performers on the night of the "gala" were fabulous singers.

Room: Our housekeeper was always very pleasant when we saw her in the hallway and provided anything we needed. Although we kept everything of value in the safe ($100 key deposit required), I did not worry the few times I left things out in the open. The room is simply decorated, very clean, enough towels for the two of us, etc. There is shampoo and liquid soap in dispensers but you may need some conditioner. The mattress may need to be replaced in room 1011 - I had a tough time wth the one side and center of the bed and had to switch to the other side after three days of waking to unusual bad back pain. I will still rate the sleep quality as very good as I did sleep well after that, as did my boyfriend.

Noise: There were two nights that we heard alot of noise from below. One night, I think I was woken up because of the guy next door yelling off his balcony at those outside below more than the noise itself waking me. It may have been a crowd that was at the "disco" below or just coming back from a trip to Margaritaville which has a nightly return bus at 2:00 am. Another was from an event down the way at another hotel. Neither was so bad that it bothered us that much but it may have if we were on the lower floors. And, it was only the two nights.

Tipping: We tipped a few people at the hotel - servers at the ala carte restaurants, some of the bartenders at the end of the week or here and there, omelette station, housekeeper, bellhop are who come to mind. Everyone provides excellent service regardless of tipping but there will be some individuals who you will want to express your appreciation to moreso. We also tipped the van/tour drivers.

Excursions: I will comment on the tour pages for the excursions we took while visiting. We went to Negril for a day on the beach and visit to Rick's Cafe; took a bamboo river boat raft down the Martha Brae River; and went to Duns River Falls which also included a trip to Sunset Resort Ocho Rios (larger than Montego Bay with more pools, separate volley ball area. If it wasn't for wanting to see Wendy and Ernest again, we would probably try Ocho Rios next time)

Montego Bay: Because our excursions brought us by the areas of Montego Bay (Hip strip, town), we had no desire to actually go to this area. We really enjoyed the experience of traveling through towns like Lucea on the way to Negril, seeing Ocho Rios, and traveling the open roads as well.

Shopping: We found that many people would say "this is what I make" but what you will find that most just carve names into items for you. It's all good, however, we did buy many things. You will see the same items everywhere. The hotel invites different vendors throughout the week to sell onsite. You can negotiate with everyone most everywhere although we did this infrequently - sometimes you just feel like someone needs the money and it isn't like they ask for much to begin with when selling items.

Some notes: some of the beach chairs could use repair or replacement, spa staff should solicit business less frequently even though they are very courteous, a few more umbrellas by the pool are needed.

Overall, we were happy with our visit to the Sunset Resort and would return again!
