My wife and I stayed at Half Moon with our 2-year-old twin girls last year, and we decided to come this year on our own for 4 nights to have some alone time. The return exceeded our expectations, which we didn't think was possible! Many of the staff remembered us, and gave us hugs and asked about our girls. I guess the twins were memorable as they were tearing up the place last time! I'm sure we were in the computer system as return guests, because we were always greeted by name at the restaurants and everyone would say "welcome back" or "welcome home", and we were truly treated like VIP's. Best of all, we reserved a Jr Suite in the West Cottages section, and we were upgraded to a gigantic Royal Suite. We were stunned. Some of the Royal Suites are only slightly larger than a Jr Suite, but this was one of the largest units, truly gorgeous, and right on the beach. The West Cottages is our favorite section of Half Moon, it has the old-world charm and elegance, and every unit is just steps from the gorgeous beach. The Hibiscus Suites are lovely too, but the beach and water can be kind of rocky. If you are party people, the Hibiscus Suites near the main pool is a good option, but we love the peace and quiet. The very helpful reservation agents are great at steering you to the best rooms for your preference.
We have been to many islands in the Caribbean over the years, but we will continue to return to Half Moon whenever we can (we will bring the twins next time, we missed them too much!). In most places, you are doing pretty well if the food is slightly better than edible, but the food at Half Moon is truly first-class. Not cheap by any means, but it is a worthy splurge. We thought the Italian Restaurant (Il Giardino) was a bit better last time, we had one mediocre meal and one very good meal this time. The Sugar Mill might be slightly over-rated, but the food is quite good. We ended up enjoying the main restaurant, Seagrape Terrace, the best because it has a gorgeous view on the beach and the food is excellent. One of the nicest spots I can think of to enjoy a meal (the Sugar Mill has no view to speak of).
Virtually everyone on the staff was fabulous, and it makes it so much more enjoyable when the staff takes genuine pride in their work. As I mentioned in my first review last year, my wife and I can't think of a single reason to go to another resort in Jamaica, it will be Half Moon every time we can go!
