“ALMOST GREAT”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2011

My wife and I just returned from an 8 day stay at Half Moon. While there are many other islands I prefer to Jamacia, Half Moon was a very good resort. We went in mid-October (13-21)...the time of year we always travel - anniversary...which always puts us OUT OF SEASON. Normally not a problem, unless you stay at 2 of the worst places we've ever stayed (Long Bay - Tortola and Plaza Resort - Bonaire)...where out of season results in very poor service.

Not really the case here, but they JUST Missed on a few small things (a result of being out of season) that causes me too mark them down just a bit.

OUTSTANDING:
1. The Staff - extremely friendly, helpful, nice-->truly felt welcomed
2. The Jr Suite - exceptional, beautiful, comfortable, great view, small courtyard pool
3. Cleanliness - people always raking, washing, sweeping, dusting -> the place was immaculate.
4. Pools were beautiful - actually had a 50 yard lap pool + everyone's favorite - a swim-up bar.
5. At some resorts, they all but ration out beach towels - not here...take as many as you need...all day.
6. Plenty of comfortable beeach lounges and plenty of places to escape from the sun when you've had enough - shade from Palm trees.
7. Dolphins - extremely cool - if you do nothing else, just go watch them...very impressive staff there too.

GOOD:
1. The food was excellent BUT---> only 2 of the four restaurants were open ---> Seagrape = good food but they never changed the menu for all 8 days (B,L,D). The second restaurant = Il Giardino ---> good, but only open on 2 days with same menu. The BEST restuarant closed - Sugar Mill...we were looking forward to having great dinner there for our anniversary.
2. Beach was nice..there were other "tripadvisor" comments about the seagrass in the water...yes there was some - but they had plenty of places to swim where there was none!

JUST MISSED:
1.. They had a manager's cocktail party, but we never got the word...never got an invitation....even 2nd tier resorts send an invite to your room...
2. They adverise afternoon tea with finger sandwiches. pastries -> never happened!
3. It is a huge property, they should given us a tour, so we'd know our way around...most places drive you around in a golf cart to familiarize you with the resort .. it took us 5 days to find the commisary
4. Shopping Mall - forget it...most shops not open

SO - we had a great time and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly...we've had the priviledge of traveling all over the Caribbean, so I'm sure some of my negative comments seem petty...BUT this is such a nice place that with just a little attention to detail and the availability of the Sugar Mill restaurant - this would have rated a "5" with us.

also did not get a chance to play golf...looks like a nice course
Might re-think October too - it rained the first 2 days and we were told "Oh, October is the rainy month"....WE DID HAVE 6 BEAUTIFUL DAYS THOUGH....

IF YOU GO IN SEASON - I BET IT'S GREAT...OUT OF SEASON, IT MISSED BY JUST A LITTLE! STILL LOVED THE PLACE.

Room Tip: all rooms are exceptional...just make sure you get one with water view!!!

My fiance and I stayed here for 7 wonderful days in a royal suite with a private pool. It was just the most wonderful vacation we've had and we travel a lot! Prior to our stay, the Epic in Miami was our only return to hotel, and now we've added Half moon to the list.

The staff is wonderful! Fitzergerald the bartender and Oneil in in-room dining went above and beyond to ensure that our stay was perfect. Bernice in housekeeping, thank you for taking such good care of us. The food is excellent with a selection of local fares to satisfy those who just wants to eat local food. My only complaint is that it there is not enough local fruits available.

All in all, we can't wait for our next visit. Thank you Denneva, it really was a time for reflection and this was the perfect location for it.

I have been going to the Half Moon since I was a little girl in 1982 and have to say of all my travels, the Half Moon is a true gem. The 400 acres of rolling, lush landscaping, crystal waters and phenomenal activities create the perfect vacation experience. We were fortunate to spend three weeks every summer in a Royal Villa and some of my most cherished memories have been made there. I have sent several friends and family there and they all agree- it is a magical place. What makes it so terrific is the wonderful staff and I'm happy to hear they are no longer under the management of their former tyrant and that their new owners have made terrific improvements. We are returning for my 40th birthday next February and I can't wait!!!!

My husband and I just spent 8 AMAZING days at Half Moon. We honestly could not have asked for more from the resort. As someone who uses customer reviews before booking any trip, I have never actually written a review before. However, it would simply be a disservice to all of the wonderful people who helped us at the hotel not to write one. With that in mind, here are a couple of details from our truly 5 Star stay that we would like to share.

We booked one of the all inclusive packages which included food, drinks, alcohol, mini bar, green fees, horseback riding, bike rental, transfers to and from the hotel and much more. When we arrived at the airport, we went through customs and were quickly whisked off to the resort. Mr. Watson greeted us upon arrival and brought us a welcome Jamacian punch while we checked in. To our GREAT surprise, we were upgraded to an oceanfront Hibiscus suite where we walked just a few feet from our patio to the ocean which was simply breathtaking.

In terms of the activites, we highly recommend the horseback beach ride. You actually swim with the horses which was an unbelievable experience! I have swam with dolphins which is unique in itself, but it was crazy to swim with these large and graceful animals. We highly recommend it! For all of you golfers, Half Moon's course is challenging but enjoyable. We were always treated like family and caddy Kevin helped our games tremendously. We also enjoyed cocktails at the 19th hole as well as pizza at the Prince of Wales Pub. Additionally, we spent half a day on bikes checking out the entire property taking various pictures of the beautiful landscape the resort had to offer followed by a 80 minute massage at the Fern Tree Spa. This is a must as the people were wonderful, the massage left us relaxed as we enjoyed two pools, the sauna, the steam room, and the other various amenities the Spa had to offer.

For those who are at the resort to lounge, definitely check out the swim up bar. Donnie and Dale whipped up some great cocktails. And I would be remiss if we didn't mention Caswell at the main bar. We had some great conversations, learned a lot about the Jamaican culture and certainly had a few (okay maybe more) cocktails!

One thing I couldn't find in the reviews was whether the all inclusive package was truly all inclusive or one of those bait and switch packages. I am here to tell you that when the resort says all inclusive it really means all inclusive. We ate and drank like royalty with 3 course meals that would otherwise cost a fortune. And one of the best parts of the all inclusive plan was that room service was included with the exception of a $5 delivery fee which we hardly minded paying while sitting comfortably in our room or on our private patio overlooking the ocean. O'Neill and Christopher took excellent care of us! In fact, we were vacationing to celebrate our anniversary and not only did we get a lovely handwritten note from the manager, but also a special anniversary cake.

Thank you Half Moon for a great vacation! We look forward to our next trip!

Sincerely, The Storms

Just returned from out 10th visit to Half Moon and experienced another fabulous visit. We started visiting Half Moon back in 2003 with our wedding and honeymoon and with each annual return visit to celebrate our anniversary, it seems each visit is more special than the last. This year was more of the same exceptional service, luxurious accomodations, fabulous food, and extensive amenities.

Following our check-in which took less than 5 minutes and included a warm "welcome back" greeting from bell caps and the front desk staff, we were quickly wisked away to our beachfront suite in the inviting West Cottages. This year's suite was located in Cottage 7, suite 155 which is a short walk from the hotel lobby. This short walk and suite were ideal for us given my wife was nearly recovered from a broken ankle. Many thanks go out to the reservation staff for accomodating us with this wonderful suite and it's short walk. This suite also reflected a recent bathroom upgrade which included double sinks with a granite counter, a separate soaking bathtub and shower, and ceiling fans. The bathroom and shower were tiled in warm earthtones which we found very soothing after our travels from San Diego. Our bedroom included a king bed and a walk-in closet, which was complete with a room safe large enough to hold our netbook computer and valuables. Lastly, our living room included an 8 foot couch, two matching overstuffed club chairs and coffee table all in co-ordinated blue and white fabrics, plus it's own airconditioner and fully stocked wet and minibar. Adding to the beauty of our suite, there are double doors from this living room which opened onto a partially covered patio which was then just steps to the beach. Overstuffed cushions on full size lounges were also included on our patio which added yet another comfortable site to enjoy a drink and the unobstructed ocean view. This suite is spacious, well appointed, and simply fabulous for our 8 day and 9 night visit.

Over the next 8 days, we played golf on 6 mornings with each day having the course nearly to ourselves. The course was in immaculate shape with freshly mowed fairways and exquisitely maintained greens. As with prior visits, the entire golf staff warmly welcomed our return as did the food and beverage staff at the 19th hole bar. I wish the days were longer that we could have played twice a day.

This year we also enjoyed the equestrian center by taking a morning horseback ride to the beach which was followed with an ocean swim with our horse. In this event, you strip down to your swim suit and remount your horse, now bareback, and ride out into the ocean. As the ocean floor drops away, your horse begins to swim and you either hang onto it's mane or slip off it's back and hang onto it's tail, all the time being dragged along. It's safe, a thrill, and something every guest should do at Half Moon.

We also enjoyed a couples massage this year at the equisite Fern Tree Spa. During our nearly hour long massage, the therapist worked out all of our aches and pains that resulted from all the golf. Following the massage, I thoroughly enjoyed a long hot shower provided by the rain style shower head that was mounted in the ceiling of my private shower. The spa personal care products are fabulous as were the plush towels. A couples massage or any service from the spa is a must "do" as well.

We also fit in a snorkeling excursion provided by the watersports team. Here too, the weather was perfect such that we could see the exquisite detail in the reef and the hundreds of reef fish. The attached pictures don't give credit to how beautiful the snorkeling was this year. We were further treated to wonderful snorkeling right off the beach each afternoon as ocean was calm and waves ideal for an easy swim to adjacent reefs.

The food and beverage at Half Moon is excellent. Morning breakfast included an extensive menu selection as well as a continental breakfast selection for those mornings we needed to get to the golf course. The breakfast staff was professional, attentive and timely to all of our needs and graciously set a pot of coffee on our table each morning. I can't get enough of the rich Jamaican coffee. Lunches and dinners were equally wonderfull as well. We had one lunch at the Prince of Wales pub and we highly recommend the fish and chips in keeping with the English pub theme. All of our other lunches were at Seagrape Terrace and each was thoroughly delicious, though we kept to lighter faire of sandwiches and salads. Here too, the lunch staff and service were professional and timely, even though I tend to day dream as I gaze across the patio to the adjacent ocean. The dinner menus at Seagrape and Il Giardino are comprehensive with several appetizers, salads, soups, entrees, and deserts. We thoroughly enjoyed many fresh fish entrees as well as grilled lobsters, steaks, lamb, and veal dishes. All of our meals were delicious and served by staff who each time welcomed us to their respective tables. We dined at Il Giardino on our anniversary and were treated to special desert arranged by the resort management. The anniversary desert added to the already superior dining experience.

Finally, no trip to Half Moon is complete without a tribute to the staff at the best bar in the Caribbean, Cedar Bar. It's beach adjacent and staffed by the best group of bartenders you could ask for. They are all personable, friendly, and accomodating of every beverage request, even when the bar was a little bit crowded. For me personally, the guys would make my "usual" when they saw me coming. What a treat to have your drink nearly waiting, but then I make it easy for the guys as I drink the same thing day after day, visit after visit. It's all part of the charm of Half Moon.

So in closing, thanks again to everyone at Half Moon, managers and staff a like. It's a pleasure to call many of you my friend, at my "home away from home". See you next year.

We visited halfmoon the last week of Sept and came to realize that it's the slowest month of the year for tourism. Lucky for us, we got upgraded to a royal suite, and it felt like we were at a private beach resort! The propery is breath-taking, the service is amazing, and everyone knew our daughter's name and treated us like royalty. The best part was the renting bikes and bike riding along the beach every morning - what a way to start our day.

We made use of the beach, pools, petting zoo, dolphin cove, and the playground. Having an onsite convenience store was great, b'c we could have breakfast and snacks throughout the day without breaking the bank. I highy recommend this resort.

I spent last week at the Half Moon - Rock Resort Montego Bay and I felt that I had to complete a review of the property. I have stayed at nearly all properties in Jamaica and without a doubt this is the very nicest property. It is a large property that fulfilled all our holiday requirements. We had a nice beach, had a swimming pool for cooling off. The bicycles were absolutely fantastic and the cycle around the property was probably the highlight for the kids each day. This cycle is a must especially for the young ones and one can go see the Dolphins at the Dolphin Cove attraction on the way {especially at feeding time which just makes the day for the kids}. {for those less energetic the golf cart around the resort is also a lovely treat for the kids}. There is also a childrens play area which again was state of the art and kept the kids entertained for a few hours each day. I even managed to slip away for a game of golf at the hotel course which is in superb condition. The food, drink and attitude of the staff were as you would expect from a high end top hotel so no complaints there. The welcome at reception, escort to the room and every request we made from a staff member was met with an enthusiastic responce plus delivery of the request. I have to pay special mention of room service - we found the food to be very tasty and the overall service very good. The staff were particulary professional I thought - quick, set the table up in the room, collected the plates within 5 minutes of calling. Also, worth noting was the room service in relation to "make up" {I am sure a special name for it} where it came to requesting kids beds versus cots - again within minutes all was sorted and with a smile on the face. For me - vacation is really important. One works hard enough during the year and when you actually take the time to holiday - it needs to be stress free. We felt like new people when we left on Sunday - so objective achieved ! Ok I always like to note an area for improvement - I felt that the speed of service in the restaurent could be improved. It was not particularly busy and yet I felt that the time it took to deliver the food was a little longer than I would have anticipated. The ambiance is very nice there so I didnt mind but my concern is whether it would take longer if busier? Overall, I would have no hesitation in recommending the hotel - the property, grounds and the room itself as I said are pure class.

Room Tip: Ask when booking !
