“The honest to goodness truth”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2009

The Spanish court hotel is a midsized, but beautifully designed hotel located in the heart of New Kingston. It isnt on Knutsford blvd, (one block over) but who cares, as it caters to those of us who have discriminating taste and are looking for nice amentities and a feeling of being home.
This hotel surpassed all my expectations. First and foremost, I have to commend certain staff members for going above and beyond to make my stay an enjoyable one. Much ado goes out to Mrs. Chin, Rohan, and Marlon, who went above and beyond in my humble estimation. As a business owner myself, its staff like these that you aim to hire, and to keep, as they work tirelessly and almost seemlessly to make one feel comfortable in every which way. Another honorable mention should also go out to Suzanne, who works at the front desk. She was sweet and demure, and it was just wonderful dealing with her everyday.
One thing I have noted in most reviews, is the lack of mention of the great breakfast that is served each day. They list it as a continental breakfast. This isnt a continental breakfast . This is a full fledged breakfast fit for a king! They have breads, such as banana bread, caribbean breads, cereals, yogurt, scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, bacon, hot tea, jamaican coffee, pineapple juices, blended juices. Its a nice spread each morning, with wonderful staff members who come personally to your table, to serve you coffee , tea or juices. I must also add, that all of this in included in the price.
One thing I also have to comment on, is, that the rooms are a bit on the tiny side, but they are still nice though. They weren’t dated, as most other hotels, which would have been a major problem for me. They are newer and in each room, there is a flat screen tv. I think that this must have been around a 42 or possibly a 46 inch, but my guess was 42 inch. Either way, my husband was delighted, as we have a 42 inch at home, and this made him feel right at home!
Another thing that made me extremely happy, was that this place offers free (can I say *free* again?) laptops to all guests. Now you tell me. I have heard about free wi-fi, but free laptop usage?; now that’s an added bonus in anybodys book.!
One downer though. Two of the young staff at the front desk I did avoid. Felt that they were too young to understand the nuisances of running a good hotel, but other than that, the ones that did, (the ones listed above) made the stay there very much worth while.
For those of you that want to have peaceful stay, choose this place. Its new from what I gather, but it’s a good place. They have weekend specials rates , so if you are calling from the USA like I did, ask for it.
I havent been to Kingston in 30 years, and I was a bit apprehensive as I heard all this stuff about the crime, so I needed to stay somewhere safe. This place is it. You really will like it, believe me. If you need to venture out, ask for Mr Johnson. He's one of the tour guys on the property. Accept no other, as he was an awesome person to deal with.
Again, to the wonderful staff at The Spanish court hotel. My humble and most sincerest thanks, for making me and hubby's trip pleasurable and memorable. Be well, and continue to do all that you do! Know that you guys are truly appreciated!

The review of the Spanish Court below given by 'FloridaRamblinMan' is pretty accurate and fair.

Overall, the Spanish Court is a haven of tranquility in the center of Kingston's business district with well-trained and very polite front desk and restaurant staff. After visiting the Pegasus and Hilton, I was very happy to have booked the Spanish Court.

My room had plenty of space with an incredibly comfortable bed, fast wired and wireless Internet, big flat screen TV with lots of channels, and an iPod player in the room. The pool surrounded by fairy lights at night is more decorative than functional but it's a nice place to sit around in the evenings for a drink (albeit interrrupted by the sound of traffic and car alarms). As noted by others, service is a bit sparse at times around the pool but always pleasant. The trendy looking restaurant on the ground floor was pretty good in the evenings with a fairly extensive menu but the breakfast (served in the same dining room) definitely became monotonous after a few days and it seems I was often waiting for the few items to be replenished. The small exercise room on the ground floor had all the basic equipment I needed.

It's not an area really to go safely walking around so best to take a cab everywhere. Juta taxi service on site but also easy to get a normal (cheaper) cab.

All in all, a great stay at the Spanish Court and I would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Kingston.

Compared to the Hilton, Pegasus, Courtleigh, and Terra Nova, Spanish Court offers the best sleeping room with the best bed. If you are in Kingston for more than a night or two, you should pay for the junior suite since the standard rooms are tiny. I mean "London tiny". Make sure your suite does not have a connecting door to the adjacent room. The connecting door is paper-thin, and you will listen to your neighbor's coughs as if they share your room.

The hotel seems like a breath of fresh air compared to the beaten and weathered options I referenced above, but beware of the thin cosmetics on this cheaply-built and appointed hotel. If you expect luxury, you are expecting too much. You won't get luxury, but you also won't have to pay for luxury. As an added bonus, you get to sample hangers from other nice hotels without leaving the comfort of your room. We had some from Terra Nova and Half Moon. Nice variety for a new hotel.

The staff is has the best attitude in all of Kingston -- I just wish there were twice as many of them. How they can be so over-taxed and still maintain such wonderful attidtudes is a mystery.

Disappointments that might be deal-killers for you:

1. The pool is about 12 feet wide, 50 feet long, and 1 meter deep. It is set on top of a narrow rooftop-deck over the lobby, and overlooks the parking lot and Kingston streets. They have 4 lounge chairs to lie on at the end, and the pool bar doesn't open until 6:00PM. Service at the pool bar after 6:00 is sparse. Walk over to the Hilton pool bar instead if you want to relax and have a drink after work. If you are stuck in Kingston over the weekend, consider moving to the Hilton or Pegasus for a couple of days for a decent pool.

2. If you plan to entertain clients, expect drinks to cost twice that of the other hotels. Also expect to explain that Campari-Soda is not a flavor of soda, that it is a drink that needs to be prepared. Be prepared to explain that tonic water is not the same as club soda, especially when mated to Tangueray gin.

3. Expect that the included breakfast will be scrambled eggs, bacon, beans, yogurt, bananas, cereal, and breads. Every day. Expect that the food will not be replenished when it runs out. Expect to repeatedly leave your table to ask for coffee since it will never come on its own.

4. This hotel cannot properly support a function. The funtion will not be set up on time, the dishes will accumulate until you call, and they often don't even prepare the table at all. The food will be much the same all week long, even if you opt for the highest catering option.

i traveled to kingston in september for a work conference and LOVED the spanish court hotel. this was my first visit to kingston and to be honest, i was a little apprehensive given the city's reputation and being a young solo female so i was hoping that the hotel would be comfortable because i assumed i would be stuck there all week.

well, the spanish court definitely lived up to my expectations. the hotel is gorgeous - lots of wood, very airy and you get the feeling you are at a beachfront property, not in new kingston. the rooms had a flat screen tv and huge bathrooms (including a bath tub) with great amenities. the staff were super friendly and accommodating, probably the best service i've had at a hotel in a very long time. since i ate at the hotel every day, i can attest that the food is of very good quality, lots of fresh fish and vegetables, although the breakfast wasn't the best - the selection was just ok and it took a while to get coffee and fresh silverware each morning. the pool area was fantastic and very relaxing, plus there is a great view of the hills from up there. the hotel also has a small gym, but there is only 1 bike and 1 treadmill, so you may have to wait to use any cardio equipment.

the hotel is located in new kingston, which seems to be the place to stay when visiting. i found that you have to take a taxi everywhere though, which can be annoying since there is a lot of traffic and i prefer walking, plus it gets expensive. there is a supermarket across the street, which is nice if you want to pick up water and the like. a few blocks away there are some nice restaurants and supposedly great clubs - i didn't get a chance to check the clubs out, but i hear that is where usain bolt loves to go. anyway, it is less than five minutes on foot, but some kingstonians didn't think it was the best idea to walk there. it was fine in a small group, but use your best judgment - there are not many street lamps so the area gets quite dark at night. the hotel is also a very close taxi ride away from the devon house, which i highly recommend. the ice cream is the best!

overall, the spanish court hotel is a pocket of serenity in a rather crazy city and i highly recommend it!

ps - as for the aforementioned safety fears, as i said i am a young solo female traveler and while i never felt unsafe during my time in kingston, i also stuck to the new kingston area and never ventured out alone. i think kingston probably gets a bad rap but be vigilant just as you should traveling anywhere.

From the moment of arrival where the impeccably attired staff greeted me by name, I knew there was a touch of elegance here...even in spite of the sophisticated clientele who were in the lobby awaiting transport for an evening out in the grand city.

This could have easily been a scene from Rodeo Drive or Cannes, the only difference being it had that Jamaican touch of old world charm and hospitality set in a contemporary backdrop. What a blend of both worlds!

The reception staff/concierge were gracious and polite, yet warm and friendly and very well spoken. No rehearsed script here (that is very often painfully recited with corny "orientation" lines) but persons capable of carrying on easy spontaneous conversation flavoured with appropriate wit and humour.

I was exhausted from my long trip from Montego Bay but was definitely relaxed upon entering room 225. The hotel was sold out and my expecations weren't great but I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and comfort of the room which is accurately represented on the website! Alas it was a room with no view (but a large yellow wall) and fixed windows but the well apointed decor, 42 inch plasma TV, cosiness of the room and internet /ipod services was just what I needed for the night!

I tried room service and both the order taking and delivery was pleasant, efficient and a most enjoyable snack (albeit it was just Club sandwich and vegetable soup). The portions were good and thank God they didn't "season" it with excessive amounts of salt!!

This brief introduction has whetted my appetite for a return trip with my family on the next occasion I have to travel to Kingston.

It has certainy reinforced my faith in the calibre and intelligence of our Jamaican staff at all levels once they are receiving appropriate training (which these people obviously have), and it will certainly enhance Kingston as a place to get away and do everything or nothing at all in a luxurious and understated elegant surrounding.

Kudos to the interior decorators and consultants on this project( Franklyn Eaton of London and Sandals fame has definitely stamped the luxury mark here in a short space of time!)

Five stars all the way!

I stay over in Kingston all the time with my family. WE loved it - a refreshing and welcome change from the norm - rooms were clean, neat, trendy and the bathroom which is the most important room for me in a hotel was extremely clean and well kept.

It is my new place in Kingston..

Great staff and great food.

The GM is the best!!
