Picture a gingerbread house on a hill in a tropical land. Imagine entering the circle drive and looking towards the center of the courtyard. There your eyes will see a fountain surrounded by wild turkeys. If you look a bit farther you will see the infamous pool (read Graham Greene's The Comedians) As you pass the Vodou statues on the lawn and climb the stairs to the veranda you can look back into the streets of Port-au-Prince. When you the reach the veranda you will, if you're lucky, be greeted by the beautiful smile of Andre, the finest waiter in Haiti. He will serve you fabulous seafood with fresh greens and dutch butter. And of course, you must have a rhum punch...but watch out...they'll put you on your a-- if you're not careful. As you wander to find your room down one of the many passages off the main house, you will see the names of the many famous people who have dwelled in the hotel. Your eyes will not be able to absorb all of the beautiful, native Haitian artwork that lines the halls and corridors. Your room will be one of a kind, for no 2 rooms are alike at the Hotel Oloffson. Perhaps you will be in a bed fit for 6 people, or you will arise and step out of your door to see all of Port-au-Prince waiting for you. And of course...you must stay until Thursday night...Ram will play until the late hours. Haitians and a mix of foreigners will dance and drink to the vodou beats of Ram. You will then see the man who runs things at this vodou lounge, Richard. And what a heavenly sight he is. You will also be blessed by the precense of his beautiful wife. What else can I say....go now!
