My boyfriend and I stayed at the Kinam during our visit to Haiti earlier this month. This was his first trip to Haiti, but I had stayed at the Kinam numerous times over the past 20 years, although for the past 5 years I have stayed with a friend on my visits to Haiti.
This trip I was dismayed to see how much the hotel had slipped! Although the staff, especially the waiters were still wonderful, courteous and helpful, the rooms had problems. In our first room, we were convinced that we must have been given a box-spring instead of a mattress, because it was so terribly hard, making it difficult to sleep. Also, the air conditioning barely worked. We asked to change rooms the next day, and although the staff at the front desk acted offended by our request, they did find another room for us. In this second room the mattress had broken springs with a sagging area that made a crater in the middle of the mattress. In addition, the whole mattress leaned side to side making us feel like we had to hang on so that we wouldn't roll out of the bed! The air conditioning was somewhat better, but at no time would I say it was really cool in the room. I thought the bathroom was clean, but we did have a few small cockroaches. This hotel charged the same price that we paid in Dallas, Texas for a first rate comfortable room both on our way to and from Haiti.
We were also somewhat dismayed by the food at the hotel dining room. I ordered grilled chicken and received a dried out, withered piece of chicken that looked and tasted like it was left from the previous week. In addition only white bread of no nutritional value was served with the meals. I must say that the salads were good and the hamburgers were delicious. However, sandwiches were of the "club" variety with three (!!) slices of the non nutritional white bread, when I know for a fact that Haiti's bakeries produce delicious whole wheat bread. In addition, the bills for the food at the hotel ran between $30-$45 per meal for the two of us...far more money than we would ever pay at home.
I am dismayed to find the food and room service at the Kinam so lacking. As previously mentioned, the wait staff and the maids are wonderful, courteous and helpful and I have felt at home at the Kinam because of their presence.
Would I stay there again? The answer is yes, but I wish that the family that owned the hotel would pay better attention to its needs and provide first rate comfort for their guests.
