“Great Resort as long as you stay away from the Front Desk”

Club Med La Caravelle

Three of us (2 adults, one chile age 6) stayed at La Caravelle from March 8-15, 2008. Coming from Toronto, the weather was great, and we adults speak some French, so the language was not really an issue.

Positives
- the beach is probably one of the best in any Club Med. The water is clear and there was no problem ever finding beach chairs.
- unlike some other reviews, we found the food to be actually quite nice, very French (foie gras one night, coquilles St. Jacques, excellent French breads, etc.). The buffet restaurant had excellent selections and we could always find something. It was great for kids too, as they always had pizza and chicken nuggets
- if you play tennis, the tennis program was a lot of fun, and the instructors were generally very friendly
- as long as you gave the appearance of trying to speak French first, the staff and the G.O.'s were usually quite friendly, although not as friendly as what we experienced in other Club Med's (Punta Cana and Cancun)

Negatives
- the bar service was sometimes slow, and they did not have the ability to make virgin beach cocktails (i.e. daiquiri, pina colada, etc). I was told that to make a daiquiri, if you took out the alcohol, there would be nothing left but lemon juice!
- the G.O.'s did not really try to meet the guests. In other resorts, it was nice to meet some of the G.O.'s from different countries to see what they were like. In this resort, the G.O.'s seemed to like to hang out with each other, and none ever made an attempt to speak to the guests - Disappointing!
- By far the worst part of the experience was the attitude of the staff at the front desk. We were openly lied to - we asked if we could change rooms upon arrival and they told us the resort was fully booked - my wife found out from the maids that there were in deed empty rooms. I was shocked by the poor attitude of the (almost 100% French) staff at the front desk, who were not friendly and did not really seem to want to help. They also move at a very slow pace in responding to questions. My advice would be to,if at all possible, avoid dealing with the front desk.
- the a la carte restaurant was very disappointing. The seafood was overcooked and the service was very slow.

Overall, if Club Med can fix the attitude of the people running the resort, it could be the best of the Caribbean Club Med resorts. I thought that the physical attributes of the resort were excellent, and the beach is the nicest we have been to. However, every time I think about the attitude of the people at the front desk, I can't help but think that our money would be better spent at another resort where you are treated much better.

Club Med always seems to have the best spots on the Island and the beach here was great. We have two children 13 and 10, we all speak French, so no communication issues. In general everyone had a great time. The rooms are small but "adequate" as long as you don't want to spend much time there. The best part is the beautiful beach. The pool area is fenced, small and not inviting. The activities were fine, but the GOs didn't really encourage involvement and weren't that helpful - the club could have done more. The evening show was OK, but it was more about several GO broadway wanabees, and not really entertaining guests or getting guests involved. The real downside was the food, which was suprising, given Club Med. Excellent freshly baked bread and pasteries, but you must stick to salads and the cold buffet as anything hot was inedible. (we discovered one reason for this was because the food was put out 2 hours before dinner and sits in a warming tray, drying out). One good dinner was freshly grilled lobster, but aside from this meats were rancid, fish dried out.
This was my second Club Med, and we have been to a half dozen all inclusive resorts where the food was better. We were thinking about another club med next year, but after this one, we'll pass.

I just returned from Guadeloupe, after a 7 days trip. I went there with my 8 years old sister, and i enjoyed very much my stay! Here are the highlights:

Plus:
The rooms
They are very nice, convenient, good looking ang comfortable (we had an ocean view suite, in the building "Grande-Terre"; ask for a room FAR FROM THE THEATER if you would like to sleep before 10:30pm; nonetheless, my sister would fall asleep in a train station, so she did!). The room service is excellent.

The beach
Very nice, long and quiet, even though the hotel was full, it always had room and never felt crowded. Water beautiful, hot, sandy in almost 95% of the "walkable" part. White sand. Don't mind the fact that it is a public beach: it really feels like part of the resort, there aren't much locals.

Sports
Very well organised (maybe a little too much organised sometimes... bring a watch: you don't want to be late!!), very nice facilitations and material. Many activities, good coaching.

Shows
Surprisingly, good evening shows (and i precise that i usually hate the "MusicHall" type, so this was unexpected fun!), with lots of dancing, energy and enthusiasm from all the GOs. The kids love it.

Critics (weaks...)
The pool
Too small to my taste, no real shallow part for the kids (between 4 1/2 and 5 feet deep), opening hours a little short.

The GO
Not always as enthusiastic as i expected... And the GOs at the restaurant and Kid's Club sometimes a little too caricaturally "French": a little rough.

The restaurant
I expected "much better" than other all-inclusive resorts (i went to Cuba and Riviera Maya before: i'd give the food in those places the minimal rate to stay alive). Well, it was better, but not "much better". And the restaurant is not always open, noteworthy, the breakfast ends at 10am. It is perfect for kids, though: chicken nuggets, french fries and burgers every day! Avoid what they are serving as"coffee" in the morning, replace this sock juice by a real allonge at the bar as soon as it opens.

Overall, we had a great time, no place is perfect, and i would surely strongly consider going back to this place if i feel like having an all-inclusive sunny kind of vacation!

“What a ripoff”

Club Med La Caravelle

My wife and I just came back Club Med la Caravelle in Guadeloupe. We had previously visited the Club Med in Punta Cana and had liked it (but that was 15 years ago) so we were expecting pretty much the same. We have over the years traveled to a lot of all inclusives in the Caribbean most recently to the Grand Sirenis in Riviera Maya (July 07).
We knew La Caravelle had just had a makeover so I was expecting larger rooms then Punta Cana, great food and also good service like most all inclusives.
Room:
We had what they call a Club room, which means I guess sleeping quarters only. No view, no balcony, no reading chair and small.
Restaurants:
They had one buffet restaurant "l'Hibiscus" which constantly ran out of food, utensils & plates !!! The service was lousy every day. We had to tell them to leave the bottle of wine at our table because we knew they would never come back to do refills. Every morning at breakfast (except if you got there at 7:00am), tables weren't set after the first serving. You had to find your own tablemats, utensils, coffee cup, coffee, sugar, milk, etc. At least if the food was great you might forget about the service but it was just so, so.
The other restaurant was "La Biguine" where you were served at the table. This one was my favourite, we had to reserve around 10:00am the previous day to be able to get in the 50 seat restaurant. It was directly on the ocean with a spectacular view of the sunset. The service & food here were very good.
Beach:
This is the highlight of this hotel, clean water, white sand, not too busy, just a wonderful place to sit down and relax.
Pool:
Very ordinary square pool with nothing special to it.
Activities:
Lots of water sports, tennis, archery, volleyball, etc. I personnally enjoyed skin diving at both ends of the beach where sand turned to coral and attracts wide varieties of fish.
Staff:
I've never been to a resort where the staff had such an attitude!! They don't seem to care about the guests at all. Mainly at the Mango Bar on the beach where I though a guest was going to have a fight was the cocky barman and the Hibiscus where I consider it a self-serve.
Overall:
A three star resort at best

The beach of Club Med in Ste Anne is the best of Guadeloupe. Sports facilities are great, such as windsurfing, kite surf, tennis, kayak, etc. The kids club is very friendly, although they only accept kids over 4. Rooms are very large, with a great view even for the standard ones, and they accomodate families in interconnecting rooms which is very convenient. Food is plenty and of good quality - bearing in mind it's all included. We did find the service a bit lazy and the beach restaurant is difficult to book in the evenings. All in all, a very good place to stay, especially with kids.
