Three of us (2 adults, one chile age 6) stayed at La Caravelle from March 8-15, 2008. Coming from Toronto, the weather was great, and we adults speak some French, so the language was not really an issue.
Positives
- the beach is probably one of the best in any Club Med. The water is clear and there was no problem ever finding beach chairs.
- unlike some other reviews, we found the food to be actually quite nice, very French (foie gras one night, coquilles St. Jacques, excellent French breads, etc.). The buffet restaurant had excellent selections and we could always find something. It was great for kids too, as they always had pizza and chicken nuggets
- if you play tennis, the tennis program was a lot of fun, and the instructors were generally very friendly
- as long as you gave the appearance of trying to speak French first, the staff and the G.O.'s were usually quite friendly, although not as friendly as what we experienced in other Club Med's (Punta Cana and Cancun)
Negatives
- the bar service was sometimes slow, and they did not have the ability to make virgin beach cocktails (i.e. daiquiri, pina colada, etc). I was told that to make a daiquiri, if you took out the alcohol, there would be nothing left but lemon juice!
- the G.O.'s did not really try to meet the guests. In other resorts, it was nice to meet some of the G.O.'s from different countries to see what they were like. In this resort, the G.O.'s seemed to like to hang out with each other, and none ever made an attempt to speak to the guests - Disappointing!
- By far the worst part of the experience was the attitude of the staff at the front desk. We were openly lied to - we asked if we could change rooms upon arrival and they told us the resort was fully booked - my wife found out from the maids that there were in deed empty rooms. I was shocked by the poor attitude of the (almost 100% French) staff at the front desk, who were not friendly and did not really seem to want to help. They also move at a very slow pace in responding to questions. My advice would be to,if at all possible, avoid dealing with the front desk.
- the a la carte restaurant was very disappointing. The seafood was overcooked and the service was very slow.
Overall, if Club Med can fix the attitude of the people running the resort, it could be the best of the Caribbean Club Med resorts. I thought that the physical attributes of the resort were excellent, and the beach is the nicest we have been to. However, every time I think about the attitude of the people at the front desk, I can't help but think that our money would be better spent at another resort where you are treated much better.
