“As Carribbean as Carribean should be...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2012

We very much enjoyed our five-day stay at the Club. It is truly located at one of the most beautiful beaches in Guadeloupe. I was prepared ( after reading the previous TripAdvisor reviews) for the worst to discover the "bunker-like" reception area, only to see a truly-1970's bent giant concrete roof in the form of a manta ray, with huge openings on the beautuful gardens. Not something one would build now, but not out of touch either.

The restaurant and food was truly exceptional and of a very high standard, continuously varied, and fortunately with a more reasonable range of dishes and specialties than feared ( Club Med should offer a standard insurance policy against overweight for all its locations).

The sailing offering was excellent - it is the first year they have four catamarans available-, and the sailing team of GO's was +++. The morning hiking program was minus, with only two short walks of two kilometers, one left and one right, that's all.

The evening entertainmnent program in the bar were more decibels than content, but that could be due to our own rural petites natures....

I stayed at La Caravelle for only 2 nights, and was once again enamored by all that Club Med had to offer.

The beach is excellent - its stretch is long, the sand is soft, the bar on it serves yummy refreshments (there are bees but they do not bother you only the bottles at the bar), there is a massage clinic on the ocean, there are plenty of water sports on offer, not to mention aqua gym classes in the ocean in the afternoon.

The staff are nice, most are very welcoming and accommodating. A few of the girls though are less friendly when it comes to speaking with a young lady... But all in all, a very professional group, who performs very well on stage too. The première Tim Burton show was very entertaining. The boutique staff are lovely and really nice.

The food was excellent as usual - large choice, all that was créole was sublime.

I didn't try the second restaurant, but it looked very nice from the outside as it is situated on the beachfront, and looked more tranquil and laid back that the main buffet restaurant.

There is plenty of entertainment all through the night, which is good for the younger adults.

However, this is a family village and there were a lot of families with children, which wasn't ideal for me for socializing for I was there on my own. Often at the restaurant, families would stick to themselves and not socialize outside of their group, or even be a bit boisterous about reserving tables.

My room was in Les Saintes, which was nice. I was expecting it to be a little larger, but it was perfect for one person. Large shower and bathroom which was ideal. Bed was very comfy. Little terrace outside which looked onto beach.

I always enjoy Club Med, and this is definitely a beautiful village. However, probably not the best place to go if you are traveling solo.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2012

Booking:  This was a bit of a hassle.  The person that we spoke to had to keep going away and asking someone else whenever I asked a question.  Some observations such as 'of course it's likely that there will be other English children there' were made rather too easily as it turned out.  It's also important to try flights on different days since Club Med use scheduled flights rather than chartered.  We changed our flight from a Friday to a Saturday, losing one day of holiday and the price went down significantly.

Flights: Scheduled Air France.  Efficient and easy.  Films on the long haul were a little dated but in English (not subtitles).  No vegetarian option unless pre booked (and I wasn't asked when booking)

Arrival:  Very busy and had to wait c.45mins for other passengers to load onto the bus before leaving.  This wasn't good for the kids who had been cramped up for hours on a plane already.

Transfer and arrival at La Caravelle:  c.45mins.  One of the GO's (reps) made some announcements on the journey but they were all in French.  Note that we were the only English (with little knowledge of French) at the resort for the two weeks, out of c.600 people.  We had guessed that this would be the case (despite comment above) and so were prepared for it - seeing it as a fine opportunity for both my wife and I, as well as our children, to be immersed in French for a couple of weeks - and so we were.  This said, most of the GO's spoke sufficient English to converse and other guests were extremely helpful.

Accommodation:  We had adjoining rooms (one twin and one large double with balcony) in the Grand Terre block looking out over the rear lawn but also with a view of the sea through the palms and with sun in the morning - there were blackout curtains though if required.  The rooms are nicely done and functional.  Above all they were quiet and we heard nothing of the night time entertainment.

Staff:  Very professional compared with similar type British operators.  The GO's worked very hard throughout the day to keep all the guests happy with the extensive range of activities on offer and then donned professionally made costumes for shows each night including a very provocative 'burlesque' show akin to the Moulin Rouge.  Only in France!  The General Manager was visible (and approachable) every day, wondering around and saying hello to everyone.

Kids Club:  Again very well run with loads of activities for the kids.  Our 10yr old daughter met a French girl who spoke a little English and they got on well with some help from the GO's.  Our 7yr old son found it a little more difficult though as he hadn't started learning French at school.  The minimum age to do some of the activities is 8yrs so he had to miss out in some cases although full praise to the GO's for being as accepting as possible considering the circumstances.  Highlights for the children were the trapeze, archery and windsurfing - all pretty much a daily activity.

Food:  The food was exceptional IMHO and I'm a vegetarian. There was a massive choice of hot and cold food at every meal including simple food such as pizzas and pasta as well as more complex and local dishes for the more adventurous.  The range of fresh fruit, bread and deserts was fabulous.  There was also a full range of baby foods for those that needed it.

Restaurants:  There are two restaurants.  The main one at the hotel and another one at the end of the beach to the right looking out to sea.  This specialises in lobster and makes for a very romantic meal with views directly over the beach and sea.  The only issue I have with it was that they were unable to provide a vegetarian meal unless I picked it up from the main restaurant myself and walked down with it, something that my wife (a lobster lover) and I felt would take away from the romanticism of the occasion - particularly if you have to get up at 0630hrs in the morning to book a table for that evening!

Drink:  All inclusive, including house cocktails and house wine.  You had to queue at the bar occasionally but for no longer than a few minutes.

Beach:  Fabulous, with clear, warm water.  The beach directly in front of the hotel was the most popular but if you walked along to the left or the right there were quieter places.  Note that the beach is a public beach and was busier at weekends and once the local children broke up from school but we weren't hassled in any way.  One point to note though was that both of our children ended up being stung by jelly fish (in both cases this was late in the day after the sun had gone down when, I'm told, the jelly fish rise up from the sea bed). They were both subsequently violently sick within 24hrs but then made a full recovery and were back running about and swimming as usual.

Overall:  A very enjoyable holiday with fabulous food, activities for the children (and adults), beach and ambiance. Being British, with limited French, did take an edge off things but we nevertheless had a wonderful time.  It's very difficult not to enjoy the Caribbean!

Finally, thank you to all the staff, especially those in the kids club who worked tirelessly and always with a smile on their faces.  Thank you.

Dear Great Member,

We thank you warmly for the time you took to write this in-depth review on Trip Advisor after your stay in our La Caravelle Club Med Resort. We are really pleased to see you and your family had good time there and you enjoyed the calm and comfort of your rooms, our staff professionalism, and the way your children have been welcomed in the Kids’ Clubs. We are also happy to see that you appreciated the food quality and the beautiful beach!

Thank you for your comments regarding the waiting time before the transfer and the absence of vegetarian food in the speciality restaurant: everything has been taken on board and shared with the Resort.

We hope to see you again soon in one of our Resorts.

Our family of four just spent 5 days at la Caravelle. We all had a lovely time, enjoying the beautiful site, well organised sport activities, good atmophere and delicious food. Overall, a highly recommandable all-inclusive break!

Our extented family group just spent 2 weeks at La Caravelle. The rooms though older were perfectly suited to our needs. In usual Club med style the food was fresh, delicious and interesting for the whole 2 weeks. But what set this resort apart was the sailing and windsurfing program. In 10 years of staying at this kind of resort this was the best place yet. The equipment was great and the crew were super helpfull and into thier job. These guys and girl were there because they loved wind sports. The instruction we got was really usefull for the beginers as well as the more experienced sailors in our group.

We were a group of 9, 5 adults and 4 kids of age ranging from 2 to 13 who stayed at La Caravelle for 1 week starting August 13th. I had stayed at this Club Med 15 years ago and remembered that vacation as very pleasant, good food, beautiful beach but very simple rooms and accomodation. That had been our last Club Med trip since after that, we tried other types of all inclusive clubs such as the Iberostar. Knowing that the Club Med in Guadeloupe had been renovated in the past years, we thought of introducing the kids to the Club Med. I was not expecting the standards of Riviera Maya 5 stars properties in terms of rooms, but I was very disappointed with the current state of the accomodation at La Caravelle. Very run down. The rooms are small, carpets needed to be changed and there was a huge smell of humidity. But one doesnt go to Club Med for the rooms...So, we were expecting more on the GEOs entertainment and on the "Club Med ambiance". Well, there was basically none. The Geos were basically not around and not really interested in making anyone participate in any activities. It was the last week before closing down till November and perhaps it is the reason why nobody seemed to really care about the guests having a great time. It started at the reception, where the people at the front desk are barely smiling. Same thing at the bar. Service is below average. Our kids played together, so they had still a lot of fun. Too bad it wasnt with Geos while doing activities. The beach is very beautiful and the water was very warm. Plenty of chairs for everyone. The food and the wine were very good as well. So, other than the beach and the food, this Club Med did not deliver on its promise to us. The Star Friends of Iberostar at all of the resorts we wentt to in Jamaica, Punta Cana and Mexico did a far better job than what we experienced in Guadeloupe. I was expecting this vacation to be a lot of fun for the kids with the Geos and that they would be able to experience the "Club Med", but that did not happen. We are not sure we would go back to a Club Med.

Positives
- the village is very well designed, since the buildings protect the main beach from the wind. This is actually the nicest beach of the island.
-The food is good and abundant
-The room is nice (we took the suite with sea-view)
Water sports very good, in particular for windsurfing: quite a big range of boards&sails and the bay is windy but without waves since it is protected by the reef
-Baby club from 2yr old onwards a big plus

Negatives
-If you do not speak a little bit of French it is hard to enjoy your holiday, just to give you an idea the welcome meeting on the day of arrival, where they explain how the village works, activities, etc it is only in French
- No internet available in the room, not even in the Suite, only wi-fi at the bar& reception, this is not in line with the category of the hotel
-other than CNN, the other 40 TV channels are only in French....

Unacceptable
-No lift: this is a family resort which accepts babies from 2yr old, how is it possible that there is only 1 lift and it was also broken for the entire holiday period? Going with the pushchair from the room (above all if you are on the 3rd floor and alone) to the beach or the restaurant could be a nightmare and can really compromise your vacation
In case you have little babies pretend a room on the ground floor, makes your life much easier.
-Not even 1 doctor in the resort: there are more than 600 guests and there is only a nurse 9-5pm with 2hrs off for lunch, and she hardly speaks English…. This is simply astonishing given also the number of families with babies. If you need a generalist doctor you need to go the nearest village which is only 15 min away, but there is no transportation and you need to book a cab... At least 2hrs in advance since most of them queue-up all day at the airport where there is the bulk of the business and would not accept a small ride from village-to-village! What if is it an emergency??

Dear Customer,

We would like to thank you for taking the time to put your comments about your holiday experience at La Caravelle Club Med resort. We were pleased to read that you enjoyed the location, food, room, watersports and the baby club.

In regards to your disappointment regarding the lack of English speaking, we are truly sorry. Club Med is a French holiday company but we try to do our up most to inform English speaking clients about our more international resorts that are highly recommended for UK customers. Unfortunately La Caravelle is not one of these resorts.

On behalf of Club Med, please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused to you and your family if one of the lifts was out of order at the time of your holiday.

Finally, we do provide the services on an onsite nurse to help GMs with any minor issues, but rest assured that, in case of an emergency, an ambulance would be called.

We now look forward to welcoming you again in one of our resorts in the not too distant future.

Kind regards,

Your Club Med UK team
