“Work in progress”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2013 via mobile

Stayed one night and had dinner with friends in the bar. Room nice enough but no hanging space as wardrobe door blocked by radiator! Very cold night(-3c) but the heating in the room went off over night and did not come on again until 7am, in consequence I was freezing. Shower very good and piping hot, tap water tepid for shaving. Bed was very comfortable, TV worked well. Breakfast was excellent, tasty bacon, hot croissant and good coffee, very pleasantly served. Bar meal was well served, nicely cooked and prompt. Good beers and ciders, red wine was a bit cold. To sum up, the hotel is in the middle of major refurbishment which will make it a pleasure to stay in...eventually. Everybody very friendly and helpful. I will return.

Thanks for your comments, delighted that you enjoyed the food, drink and service during your stay. Apologies for your room not being warm in the morning, we have now adjusted our central heating system to come on earlier in the morning to avoid this happening again.
Re work in progress internal renovation will complete by mid April, the standard twin rooms (in which you stayed) will see further improvements with new furniture and new carpets ; a ground floor accessibility room and two new annex suites will be opened and finally the hall, stairway and landing will have been redecorated and carpeted .
On completion next month we will have nine four/five star superior rooms,( three of which are newbuild and six total renovations) and four four star standard twin/single rooms-I hope that you will visit us again to see the completed work!

We needed somewhere for Sunday lunch on our way home from holiday accommodation. We were delighted to find Y Talbot were happy to accept our dog in their bar area, which was warmed by an open fire.

We arrived around 10.30am, so whilst half our party set off for a bracing walk in the adjacent countryside, the others settled in for a morning coffee.

When it came time for lunch, we found the food was a notch above standard pub fayre and very enjoyable. The vegetarian option was particularly commended by a couple of members of our party. Service was both prompt and friendly.

Overall we Y Talbot the perfect location for our Sunday lunch.

Having dined twice once on a Sunday and mid week, I have to say for pub bar food it is expensive. Same prices as main restaurant ! But in a bar! The portions small. The other diners thought the same, having to fill up on a sweet. Though the Sunday lunch was better but the chicken was about £8.50 and beef £12.50. Are these bar prices with bar type service. The pie of the day being £10.

My wife and I stayed for a week-end and were surprised to find our re-furbished room to be of such a high standard. We'll now never be satisfied with our bathroom at home ! We enjoyed two excellent evening meals and first class breakfasts. I was delighted to find that the beer (a particular interest of mine !) and bar lived up to the glowing recommendation in the recently published 2013 Good Beer Guide - 'oozing character and heritage', 'well worth seeking out' etc. We'll be back.

Room Tip: We were on the first floor and the free wifi was readily accessible from there.

We were staying in nearby Pontrhydfendigaid and were recommended to go there for a meal by some of the locals. We were soon seated in the bar in front of a roaring log fire. The menu is quite extensive and reasonably priced. We would certainly say the the pork belly and the confit of duck leg were well prepared and very tasty. There was a wide selection of ales, ciders and wines and the dessert menu looked good, but we were too full!

Historical inn in a fascinating little village, surrounded by mountains with wonderful scenery. Mick, Nia and Dafydd have recently taken over the management of the inn, and are working hard to renovate and extend it.

Even with that work still going on, it is a great place to stay. My room was comfortable and spacious, with a bathroom that could have come from a 5* hotel. There are three bar rooms downstairs each with their own character, plus the "Long Room" restaurant - we didn't actually eat in the restaurant during our stay, as the "Hall Bar" was cosy and ideal for children. Excellent food (same menu in the bar or restaurant), well cooked and served. Wonderful selection of local Welsh beers and ciders.

Children are well catered for - out little 4 year old is sometimes a fussy eater but he loved the chicken nuggets (had them twice), and enthusiastically tucked into his breakfast (cooked with his choice of scrambled eggs and bacon).

If you are travelling to/from the east by car then try the Abergwesyn road - lonely and rugged, a real taste of the local countryside.

We were super impressed with Y Talbot. What a great place! The Pub/hotel itself is a beautiful building in the centre of Tregaron. The rooms are newly refurbished and offer all the modern comforts while the Pub is wonderfully traditional with open fires, fine ale and classic tasty food.
Breakfast offered a delicious continental buffet or traditional cooked breakfast (huge..great for walkers). Everyone working there were so very kind and helpful and the management were also very flexible to our changing needs (we booked for 2 nights to attend a wedding in the area and ended up staying 5!). I stay in a lot of hotels around the world and don't comment on websites much, but occasionally you get inspired. In this case I thought "I must just write something about this place on TA".
The immediate countryside around Tregaron is breathtaking and Y Talbot offers the perfect base to explore the area whether you like walking, mountain biking or just exploring the country in the car.
Well done the new management and staff of Y Talbot. You really have elevated this pub/hotel to a whole new level. Top marks! I'll definitely come back.
