This was supposed to be a once in a lfetime holiday, and we thought we had found the ideal resort, largely (as usual) based on the reviews here. However, it couldn't have been the same resort that other people rave about.........
On our (late) arrival we were shown to our villa and left to sort out the beds with no linen and no one to help - we had asked for one double room and one twin room for our friend and our son who were sharing but this request via the travel agent had been either not conveyed or ignored - who can say??? However, experience during the week perhaps insinuates that it may be the latter. The bed in our room was a pretty cast iron four poster and it looked really lovely. What a shame we had to sleep in it. Every time you moved there was the most appalling noise. God forbid we had people in the other room - if we had wanted a romantic get away that involved either sleeping or intimacy it would have been a disaster.
The villa was ok - nicely appointed and the kitchen had every amenity you could ask for. The bedrooms were a nice size and each had their own bathrooms, but not that this was much use as you couldn't predict when there would be any hot water to enable you to shower.
There are two swimming pools at the resort - the 'infinity' pool outside the villas where we stayed and a pool up top nearest the reception. The infinity pool was cleaned every morning and we really appreciated the proximity of it. The pool at the top we only visited once, and after having had a swim and then watched someone wash their dog in it (and then watch the dog have a wee in the pool) we left rather sharpish and retreated to the infinity pool. Shame really as our little boy liked the slide despite it's faded grandeur.
The bar and restaurant were our biggest bugbear. The kids menu consisted of four or maybe five items of which four out of the five were fried food. Now, our little one is no vegetarian angel, but even he was sick of burger - fish nuggets - chicken nuggets for lunch and tea every day. Additionally, there was (apparently) a daily special but we were never advised of it. There was a lack of co-ordination between reality and planning with regard to the restaurant and the reception - for example 'enjoy our family sunday brunch from 11am onwards' said the sign in the restaurant. Go to the restaurant and they don't know what you're talking about....... little things, but when you decide en famille to have a lay in and miss breakfast on the strength of the brunch, it's a bit of a pain for them not to actually have one.
Don't expect too much if you take kids. There is nothing for them to do apart from swim - the climbing frame by the toilets is fine for toddlers, but not for any children older than this.
I can imagine that this sounds like nit picking and I am sure we should just have smiled and said 'this is Grenada', but to be honest I expected just 'better', especially for the price of the holiday. It just wasn't up to scratch - can't think of how to put it any better, We were stuck away from anywhere (which usually suits us to be honest) but the hotel's friendly taxi guy seemed to have a flat rate to anywhere close to St Georges or Grand Anse which didn't correspond to reality for the distances involved. So we stayed on resort for quite a lot of the time and just felt short changed with the entertainment, service and lack of activity for our son. We actually loved Grenada, but in a nutshell would not ever return to True Blue Bay. There are the hotels along Grand Anse which, according to conversations with other travellers make True Blue look something like amateurish. Shame really.
