“LaLuna for the 8th (9th?) visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2013

My husband, Jeff, and I have been to Grenada multiple times and have stayed exclusively at LaLuna for the past years.I can't say enough nice things about the facilities, the staff, or the location. It's VERY low key--which we like--and completely relaxing. We take the midnight flight from JFK to get in an extra day, arrive at laLuna, and, if the room isn't ready, eat breakfast and lie out by the pool for a nap. The staff remembers us when we get there and asks about our daughter who has come two or three times with us. The chef comes over to recommend dishes, and when we've eaten there several nights in a row, he has come over to ask if we'd like something not on the menu--and makes it for us. It's small enough that the staff remembers what you like and makes sure you have it. We like to be up on the hill for the view, although it usually takes me a couple of days to get in good enough shape not to have to make a few stops walking back up. They toiletries in the bathrooms are wonderful Italian products, but the best thing about the bathroom is that it's partially open to the outside so that you have a wonderful view while showering and you may have a friendly lizard come in. I noticed in March that the steps had been repainted, there were new towels and "our" room had had minor repairs. The worst thing that's happened to us there was a problem with not enough hot water during prime-time for showers, but we have stayed in the same room for the last 5-6 years and the water was perfect on our last trip (March 2013)!
The rooms are wonderful--really big and a nice combination of low-key and luxurious. I love the colors (vivid Caribbean colors, each room a different color).
There are usually couples from different countries there, with ages from mid-twenty honeymooners to couples in their 70's. (We're toward the 59-60 side). Our daughter and her boyfriend are early 20's and LOVE the place. We like privacy (like to sit out and read, wander around taking photos, etc) and never feel crowded or rushed, although on some cruise ship days, there may be an extra 10-15 people on the beach.. There's no loud music, you can snorkel right there, and there are no children. Some women wear nice dresses at dinner (cruisewear) but I usually wear casual pants and feel fine.
Yes--it's a way from town and the road is unpaved toward the end, but to us, these add to the sense of being away. There's another restaurant within walking distance (a 5-minute walk at night) and others within a 15 minute drive.
If I can help with specific questions, ask!

And if you need a guide to the island (and you should definitely take a trip to the nutmeg processing station, the rum distillery, the rain forest, a waterfall or two, and more), contact Mandoo. He's retired from the British Merchant Marines and has come back to Grenada to guide and to work on conservation and ecology. He's a wonderful source of knowledge about local flora and fauna and is a truly kind person.

We stayed at Laluna in April which seemed a good time of the year to visit Grenada. The prices tend to fall a little and the weather is still lovely. We chose Lalune because we like small quiet hotels. It has only 16 rooms so much of the time you seem to have the resort to yourself. The rooms are spread up the hillside and you get valuable exercise up and down the steps. Our room was a semi-detached villa about half way up the resort and had a fantastic view. It was also very spacious with a large terrace which was lovely to lounge on in the evening. The big four poster bed was very comfortable and had pure linen sheets which seemed a bit rough to the touch at first but were fine for us. Don’t expect a marble bathroom – Laluna is not like that. The rooms could be called simple but are so spacious that you have a settee for lounging inside and another outside.
The restaurant operates to a relaxed schedule. Breakfast can be ordered up until early afternoon and overlaps with lunch which can be taken until mid-afternoon. The restaurant staff just have a break between 5-7 before the dinner service. Breakfast is a-la-carte which makes sense for so few guests. There is a great range of options or just ask for what you would like. Other meals are basically Italian which we loved. There is lots of fresh seafood and do not miss the Seafood Risotto – its world class. We booked half-board which allowed us to choose anything we wanted at breakfast and dinner and which seemed good value compared with the a-la-carte prices.
Laluna is slightly remote from other beaches and restaurants. A taxi will set you back 25US$ each way. The only restaurant within walking distance is the Beach House about 200m away. Thats good to try for a change from Italian food.
The staff at Laluna are terrific. You will be well looked after and don’t miss happy hour and a Laluna Mist cocktail while the sun goes down.
Downsides? Snorkelling at the resort is not very good but is amazing elsewhere. Spa has little or no "spa ambience"....
If you are looking for a quiet, romantic hotel that is nothing like the big “all-inclusives” that seem to be all over the Caribbean – try Laluna.
Oh, and by the way Grenada is a lovely place. Friendly people and amazing plants and wild life. Take the rain forest trek with Lennox to the waterfalls – its really good. Turtles laid eggs on the Laluna beach while we were there and during breakfast an Osprey flew by with a fish in its claws....oh, and the humming birds….you get the idea…

Room Tip: All rooms are the same size - a quite private "semi" is number 9 (but don't tell every...

Dear guest,
Thank you for taking the time to review your great experience of Laluna and Grenada.
We are happy that you managed to get off property and see what the island has to offer.
Our concierge service is always available to assist you with your ideal holiday while at Laluna.
The Asian Spa is not your contemporary resort spa, and in keeping with the Balinese theme of the hotel, it is reflected in the open style, and natural surroundings, right down to the Balinese messeurs themselves. We look forward to having you stay with us in the near future.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2013

My husband and I stayed at LaLuna for about 5 days in mid-April 2013. It was one of the best vacations we have ever had. Grenada itself is a warm inviting, friendly place, yet not too overcrowded or overpopulated with massive tourist attractions and huge hotel chains. This is one of the reasons we came to the island, we wanted relaxation and peace, not chaos and crowds. If you're looking for raucous partying, and late nights, this is not the place for you. If you want luxury, seclusion, and pampering, with excellent dining in an amazingly natural outdoor habitat, then come here.

Facilities: We stayed in Room #11, which was a little bit of a hike up several flights of stairs, but well worth it when you get to see the sunrise and set reflecting on the beautiful ocean, from your bedroom each morning/evening. Truly magical! (If you have any issues with stairs, just ask to be placed in a lower suite. This wasn't an issue for us, we're young and in good shape!). The premises were clean, immaculately kept and beautiful. They have an organic garden and you can smell the basil when you walk by...yum! The spa facilities (we had two massages) were also awesome. Also, in the suite/cottage, the showers/bathroom/plunge pool are in a covered, but outdoor pavilion attached to your cottage, so you can get in/out without trekking sand and water into your rooms. At first, it seems odd, but its actually quite smart and also that lends to the romance of the entire place,...again if you're looking for romance and seclusion, this is your ticket to that!
Amenities: There's a treadmill, weights, etc. in a workout room off the side entrance, but you are in nature, so why not just exercise there. There's daily exercise classes (we did Yoga and Pilates with Leslie--she was great!)...on the beachfront yoga pavilion...and I don't know if doing it indoors will ever be the same for me again, after having the beach as my focal point! We went kayaking twice, over to two secluded beaches (maison rouge and the grand etang, as well as magazine beach). That was awesome as well!

Food: The food was part of our package so breakfast and dinner were included..and I cannot agree with the reviewers who complained about the food and service. There was not one meal that wasn't exceptionally delicious from the chickpea and gazpacho soup, to the octopus salad, to the unbelievably fresh fish of the days (we tried barracuda, mahimahi, red snapper, king fish and others), and the pasta (you must try the Pappardelle LaLuna--it is magical!). Honestly, we loved it and we're both foodies who lived in NYC for many years, so we're picky! The service was wonderful also, and everyone who served us was on the ball. The bartenders are also awesome. We had two gentlemen and they were the best--and also very friendly. If you want to leave at night there's a restaurant right next store on the same beach that some people tried, but we didn't feel the need, since we were happy with the food at LaLuna. We did eat out in St. George's at BB's on the waterfront in the harbor and that was unbelievably awesome also. (will be reviewing it separately...all I have to say about that is you must try the sweet potato pudding...delish!)

Surroundings: We took a tour of the island, went into St. George's (the town and spice market), and also took a tour with Lennox at the waterfalls...all pretty awesome. I would highly recommend going to Grand Etang falls....there's amazing things in there to see, nutmeg trees, cinnamon growing right in front of you along with bananas and papaya and mangoes. The natural resources and their preservation are a testament to how un-touristy this place is...nothing has damaged it yet, and I hope it remains that way for a long time!

Overall, I would highly recommend this as a place to reconnect with your spouse, as we certainly did. I would also come back again, and we travel a lot and don't typically say we will return to a place, but we would return here for sure.

Room Tip: Like I said above, if you have an issue with stairs, get a cottage closer to main part of the resort...

Grenada is a wonderful place! Still unspoiled by over development, it is a simple place with very friendly people who know a lot about their history. Laluna is definitely a different kind of resort. Very small and quite private, even though the beaches are considered public here, and the restaurant is open to all. We stayed in early April in a deluxe cottage. the room is spacious and the open air bathroom is great. no foggy mirrors and freezing cold! The lighting could be better though. The staff is very helpful and we found the wait staff to be exceptional. The food was good, not great. There was not enough of the local flavors brought to the menu. The one dish that did this well was the seafood risotto, as it barely resembled typical risotto. It was well spiced and not heavy at all. One noticeable absence was anything using the local chocolate -it's very good..And hopefully Chef will be able to grow some arugula in the garden. Breakfast was pleasant. the french toast is the lightest I've ever had and we love the nutmeg syrup. You must do a hike with Lennox - he is a local treasure. He is a delight to spend time with and knows so much because he wants to. The descriptions of the tours are poor. We were disappointed with the spice market and "local" shopping (a mall meant for the cruiseships), but the fort tour was great. Listra was a wonderful guide. the beach is beautiful and the porch outside the cottage is delightful. cool breezes and a lovely seating area- a nice area to enjoy a drink or read a book. We would definitely try them again.

Dear guest,
Thank you for your review of Laluna and your stay with us.
A tour with Lennox is a great part of the Grenadian experience that we are happy to organize for our guests.
Chef does use local ingredients infused with Italian cooking for our dishes. To have a truly local dining experience, our concierge service is more than happy to recommend many of our our local restaurants that specialize in authentic Grenadian cooking.
We hope to have you stay with us again.
ciao

OK, we stayed here 28th March to 4th April 2013. To make this review easy I'll list positive/negative as lists.
Positive;
1. Great location, lovely bungalows on hillside, spacious with own plung pool.
2. Staff very friendly and helpfull
3. Restaurant food was fairly average really for this quality of holel/resort.
4. Main pool and beach, loungers, bar etc very good.
Negative;
1. We ate twice in the restaurant. First time the staff told us they had a large party coming to dine and would we like to book a table. We of course agreed a table for 8.00pm. However finally at 9.45 after having to point out that we were actually guests and should have priority were given a table. The meal and service then went ok until we finished the main course. Finally after waiting 25 minutes for someone to ask if we wanted desert/coffee and to clear the plates we gave up and left. Nobody noticed us leave!
2. We decided it may have been unusual as it was very busy so dined again a couple of days later. It was 15 minutes after being shown to table that we finally got menus and wine list and were asked if we wanted drinks. Things went ok then until our mains arrived, 3 of the 4 meals were sent back as they were cold. Also, why do some restaurants still serve meals on cold plates which doesn't help!
3. Be warned that there are local University students who like to visit the resort for the day to use the bar/beach/loungers. While they are allowed by the management they are supposed to only use the beach loungers. But you may find there are no poolside free and then have to decide if you complain to management to see if they are guests or not?
Generally;
This is an expensive, luxury personal resort so these are not acceptable. The restaurant should have a server in control to ensure that diners aren't left sitting waiting to be served.
Unfortunately we won't be returning. Also note that they charge 12.5% service charge where all other restaurants we used charged 10%. If you stay at Laluna then dine elsewhere. The beachhouse a 2 minute walk along the beach is excellent. BB;s Crabshack (a taxi ride) or more local dining but excellent is Boots (they will collect and return you for less than a taxi).
Grenada however was very nice, with freindly people and interesting things to see.

We have just returned from a week at Laluna. We had the beachfront cottage but the resort is a delight, made better by the excellent staff who were friendly, professional and fun too. The bar is a lovely area to meet people for sundowners - Urban and the team were great Baristas and we were lucky to meet some really nice people who congregated to watch sundown or have a nightcap. We did the trek to the rain forest with Lennox - an experience not to be missed as he is so knowledgeable about the area and all the wildlife and plants - if you only do one thing then do this. The products in the bathroom were great and plentiful. The housekeeping staff were great too - clean towels twice a day and I loved the outdoor bathroom. Rooms were great and the bed was one of the most comfortable we have had. Our only small complaint was that the lighting could be better in terms of shaving/make up which we mentioned to them and they said they would take this into consideration when they do their upgrade in September. Unusually for us, the trip was too short and we could easily have stayed longer.

We will definitely return to Laluna.

Room Tip: No 1 beach front deluxe cottage is the way to go. Great being able to sunbathe with the facilities...

This resort is absolutely fabulous. We stayed in the cottage deluxe. We probably had the worst cottage in terms of view - we were right above the restaurant so we looked down on the driveway and entrance and our view of the ocean was largely blocked. However, the terrace area was a wonderful place to rest, very comfortable. It was quiet. I never did use the plunge pool because we were close enough to the beach that we had a nice breeze. The room was immaculate and the outdoor bathroom was different and very nice. The staff were generally very professional and helpful. The only real downside was the restaurant. The food was very good but portions size was inconsistent and often too small requiring ordering of additional food. The menu lacked sufficient variety if you were eating most of your meals at the hotel, which we usually do. The fresh fish was swordfish for the majority of our visit which is odd for the Caribbean. However, the Beach House was within walking distance and had excellent food and variety, including many fresh fish options. The beach was beautiful and there was never any problem finding a place to sit. It was very private. There was always a breeze so you felt cool and not overheated. Watersports were always available. There were beach hawkers but they were not bothersome. We would definitely return.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the kitchen/lobby. We were told by other guests that the further away you...

Dear Guest, thank you for your compliments on your stay at Laluna.
I will let chef know of your concern of the food portion size. We serve only fresh fish, not frozen, and therefore it may be the same type of fish depending on what the fishermen bring to our beach. We look forward to having you stay with us in the very near future. ciao
