I can't believe I didn't write a review of LaLuna until now....We had simply the most magical trip at this incredible resort. We had mulled over many Carribean options and did not consider Grenada until stubmling upon it as a recommended destination on a travel forum. Like just about everyone that goes to the island, we completely fell in love with the relatively unspoiled charm of this incredible island and it's people.
This place is simply heaven on earth. It is pure relaxation at it's finest. I have never felt as relaxed in my entire life as I have at LaLuna. There are activities to do but simply chilling is priority number one. Our days here generally consisted of: wake up, go to breakfast, have a rum punch, sit on the beach, get another punch, lounge on the daybeds, do an activity or have lunch, have some romance, take a nap, lounge on the daybeds some more, predinner rum punch, dinner, and then enjoy wine on our porch and look at the stars. It was simply fabulous. The design of the resort is so conducive to this general sort of milling about and relaxing -- there are probably as three times as many seats or daybeds as there are possible guests. Sounds crazy, but it really encourages you to sit and lounge throughout the resort. So so wonderful.
It's very hard to describe the vibe of this place or who it's good for. I love luxury and have stayed at many fabulous resorts -- this is not a typical "five star" place...if you want marble floors and prada bath products and totally anticipatory service, this isn't it. I thought there was no way it would be worth the price of the room -- and compared to other similar priced places, it's not the same type of "luxury" in terms of the "stuff" -- but it was hands down worth every single penny. There is just something intangible and magical about it here such that I can't even put a price tag on it.
Some other notes about things I was curious about before going:
Open air: Prior to our arrival, I was a little nervous about LaLuna. I am not a "nature girl" and hotels like Ladera and LaLuna had me nervous with their talks of open air bathrooms and bugs. I must say, these reports are pretty exaggerated. The "open air bathroom" is hardly that, with a totally enclosed toilet area and then a shower and sink area with a roof, door to your patio, and thatched shade that can be pulled up or down. So yes, while there are not four solid walls on each side, it's not as though you are completely exposed to the elements. And while you do get a little gecko or moth here and there, we had no issues with any large bugs or creatures. So if you are nervous about that, do not fret!
Staff: As mentioned above, service is not anticipatory like general five star places. They prefer to be more hands off and not be constantly hovering over you, which we appreciated. Once you flagged someone down, they were happy to do whatever we liked. And the staff here is just SO kind. We fell in love with all of them. Antony, Fletcher (!), Lystra, Cindy -- everyone was so so wonderful and really make this place what it is.
Food: I know many people had mixed reviews on food but we thought it was quite delicious save one fish dish that wasn't cooked properly. Everything else really exceeded our expectations. We had a partial meal plan and while we were happy to be able to go check out some other places, we really loved everything we ate here and would happily do another meal plan there again.
Beach/activities: I read some review that complained about the beach, which we thought was crazy! The beach here was actually probably the prettiest beach on the island that we went to, and we went to probably 5 of them. It is pretty much an entire private beach that is shared only with LaLuna and the Beach House restaurant, so there were never more than probably 12 people on the (at least 1/2 a mile long) beach at once.
The resort can organize activites with Lennox. We did the rainforest hike (the more "advanced" path despite us not being "advanced hikers" at all) -- a MUST DO! Even if you don't stay at LL, definitely do a hike with Lennox. An amazing guide -- so personable, charming, and really knew so much about the island and the flora and fauna. I was also a very "scared" hiker but he was very comforting and encouraging and I made it through parts I thought there was no way I'd be able to! So great.
Romance: This place is super romantic -- great for a getaway or honeymoon. I would never come here in anything except a couple as it is definitely a couples resort in my opinion. Ages during our stay ranged from 20s to probably 70 with probably 2 20 something couples, 3 30 somethings, 2 40 somethings and 2 50+. Everyone was lovely and charming.
Rooms: As people say, the top rooms are a hike. We were at the farthest north room, and honestly, it wasn't that bad. If you have difficulty walking, this may not be the best place for you as there are tons of stairs throughout the resort, though you can also request a lower level room that does not have stairs leading up to it.
Afterhours: The resort basically shuts down at 10 p.m. and is very secluded (though not terribly so as I was worried about). I strongly would recommend buying a lot of duty free wine on your way to Grenada -- the wine in Grenada was awful..All throughout the island and all price points..I believe due to import taxes and restrictions. We bought two duty free bottles and I wish we had bought ten, as our evening activity consisted of sitting on the porch and drinking wine. If you bring some, this can be a lovely time.
Spa: the spa here is GORGEOUS and incredible. I wish all the rooms were designed like the spa -- so chic and luxurious. The Balinese massage here is. in. cred. i. ble. I am an massage connisseur to say the least and the one here was one of the best ever. Tiny little ladies who can dish out the most insane massages! Even if you don't stay at LaLuna be sure to visit the spa here for one of the best massages of your life!
All in all, this is an incredible place and one of my favorite places on earth. We actually had already arranged to stay at another resort for part of our trip and when we arrived I started crying as I missed LL so much. If you are seeking relaxed, private luxury, lots of romance, tons of relaxation, some of the nicest people on earth, and tasty rum punch, you cannot find a better spot than LaLuna.
If I came back I'd stay on the south side (I believe...to the left of the pool as facing the poo...
