“What a gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

This is the second time we visited Kalinago. The staff are the best, always friendly and go out of their way to make your time with them perfect. The food, the hotel, the beach, the drinks...doesn't get any better.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are beach front.

Reading some reviews continues to convince me that some people constantly look for flaws rather than looking at the many plus points of being on a delightful Island with a developing tourist industry. The menu is simple (are not all the menus at all the restaurants?) and is always an indicator of good food; the service was faster than most of the places where we have dined over the last two weeks and the tuna was hot and served with an excellent ginger and lime sauce. Coffee was good and overall the bill reasonable at EC$ 160 for two

Given some people want the negatives: the dining room has walls of dark painted walls - and the tuna had bones in it!

My wife and I have just returned from a short break at the Kalinago. We loved the room, which was clean and spacious. The beds were very comfortable too. We ate in the restaurant twice while we were there, and meals were tasty and well presented, though not always precisely what was set out on the menu. Morne Rouge beach is just a few yards away, which is clean and lovely to swim in. It's a pleasant walk away from the Grande Anse beach area, which as well as a quite beautiful beach has a shopping centre and and restaurants. You can catch the fantastic dollar buses from there into and back from just about anywhere on the island.

For all these good points though, the Kalinago has some noticeable flaws which detract from the overall package. They have a lovely open-air bar between pool and beach, but for some bizarre reason they insist on playing loud music in it practically all the time, and not nice laid-back reggae which would have been OK (if a little less loud), but sometimes harsh Dancehall-type sounds, 90s R&B divas, full-on stuff from the 80s and so on. I have very wide tastes, but every time we went down there for a drink we would be forced away within a few minutes. It wasn't just us.....the bar was just about always empty or had one or two die-hards. This, I think, is symptomatic of a hotel which just doesn't get the needs of its guests, doesn't try to understand them and therefore doesn't give them what they want, but what the staff as individuals think is right. Guests therefore end up spending time and money away from the Kalinago, which can't be good for the business. I think the hotel management need to give some serious thought to this for the future.

The other flaw became apparent at the weekend during our stay. Morne Beach is, as I said before, beautiful and calm, and the Kalinago sits centrally on the beach. Close by, though, are areas of land which front the beach which are used by locals for a range of functions, from church get togethers to parties. I haven't a problem with that at all. It's great to see. The events can be very noisy though, which is outside the control of the hotel. Saturday was OK, but on Sunday there was a party which went on all afternoon until late into the evening, and the music to this was incredibly loud. The land the parties are held on is adjacent to the right hand side of the Kalinago, when looking from the beach. It must have been very annoying for guests at that end of the hotel. Fortunately, we always travel with ear plugs, so we were able to blot out worst of the noise. As I said, this is outside the control of the hotel, but they need to acknowledge that this might be a problem for some of their guests at weekends. I asked before we went for a quiet room, as I had read on Trip Advisor about noise problems, but was told by the hotel that all their rooms were very quiet. A bit disingenuous perhaps.

I was wavering about whether to plump for 3 out of 5, but am giving a score of 4, as I think this is fundamentally a good hotel, though it could be much better.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the restaurant end.

This was our second time staying at the Kalinago, having spent a week here last Jan. as well. Kalinago is a 3 star hotel, basic, but very clean and comfortable with a laid back, friendly atmosphere. What makes this hotel special is it's location. It's directly on Morne Rouge beach (it was exactly 50 steps from the patio of our ground floor room to the beach) which has soft white sand and calm, warm water located in a beautiful tropical bay surrounded by hills. There is little else on this bay which is about a half mile long so the beach is very empty. There are plenty of trees on the beach providing shade and the hotel has plenty of lounge chairs for the beach. The hotel also has a nice sized pool and a small bar overlooking the beach. All 29 rooms have small balconies facing west, with views of the sea and sunset. The rooms are large with a nice sized bathroom with an excellent shower. The rooms have a flat screen tv, a safe, refrigerator and coffee maker. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. We arrived at 7 AM and our room was available for us to use. On the other end our plane wasn't until evening and they allowed us to remain in the room until 3 PM. The down side to its being so isolated is the food situation. The closest restaurants are at least a fifteen minute walk which includes walking up a steep hill or a $10 taxi ride. The hotel does have a restaurant, also overlooking the beach, where the food is hit or miss. You can also order food at the bar all day. The best restaurant in the area, The Beach House, provides a free shuttle service to their restaurant. There is also a well stocked supermarket in Grand Anse, a 20 minute walk away where we bought drinks and food items to have breakfast in our room. All in all we really enjoyed the informal, relaxed atmosphere and enjoyed our stays here very much.

Room Tip: The rooms nearer the lobby and bar/pool area get better wifi than the rooms at the far end of the ho...

This a a small quiet hotel on the best beach on the island. The staff were very friendly and helpful, excellent bar area but very quiet in the evening. ( Crystal - liked the chalk board with the cocktail of the day!)
Breakfast - Fresh fruit, coffee & toast and what ever you ordered was cooked fresh. We ate at the restaurant a couple of evenings and again fresh local food.
The rooms and the hotel is very clean, beach towel available every day and plenty of sun beds. With a beach like, Morne Rouge & Grand Anse beach a short walk away, you are not in your room much!

I stayed here for two weeks with friends, the hotel is right on a fabulous beach, hotel clean and very friendly, bar staff make great cocktails and were very welcoming. I was very happy to also find out that canoeing and snorkels etc were included in the price. I would highly recommend this as a place to stay.

Room Tip: Have ground floor if possible it just a skip and hop to the beach.

My wife and I booked the Kalinago because of a great rate we got on Sky Auction. It is a small hotel sharing a section of Morne Rouge Beach with its sister property, the Gem Resort. First let me say that we both loved Morne Rouge Beach. It has very calm waters and very few visitors, so it was the perfect place to just hang out and veg. On the other hand, the location is pretty isolated and very hilly. If you want to go anywhere you either need a rental car or a fairly hefty bankroll for taxis. We chose the taxi route and I’m glad we did. The roads are all busy with cabs and busses making frequent stops in front of you and lots of pedestrians on the sides of the roads. If you decide to use cabs, try to find a good one and use him exclusively for your stay. We hit the right guy on our fourth excursion and stayed with him for the rest of the week (I highly recommend Junior at Junior’s Taxi Hire).

Kalinago itself looks to be a newer property and our room was fairly large and well set-up, including a small refrigerator that was useful for keeping a few cans of beer cold. The room was very clean and the housekeeping staff kept it that way all week. There was a small balcony overlooking the pool and the beach. Room amenities included a small electronic safe, the usual toiletries and a setup for instant coffee. The Wifi signal was hit-or-miss inside the room, but much stronger on the balcony. Throughout our stay we found the staff at the hotel to be friendly and helpful.

The hotel has an onsite restaurant mostly for the benefits of its guests. We had breakfast there three times and lunch and dinner once each. The menu selections are quite limited but the food was pretty good - with the exception of the pancakes I had one morning that I’m pretty sure were microwaved.

My wife and I both enjoyed our stay at the Kalinago Resort and would recommend it to friends if they can book it at the right price. But just in case hotel management is reading this, I have a few suggestions that would improve the guest experience without costing a lot on money. First, put some trash receptacles out by the beach, and also put an extra trash bin in the room by the coffee. Next, install security latches on the doors in the rooms. Also, buy some more beach towels. One day we were given small bath towels because the beach towel supply had run out – and there were only 5 people on the beach that day! Finally, ask the guys working at the bar to quiet down. We could hear them yelling and laughing on two nights after 10 PM, and there weren’t even any customers at the bar. Other than that, good job.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the second or third floor for a nicer view.
