The Coyaba is a real gem hidden away on one of the best beaches in the Caribbean. The beach is well maintained by a team of cleaners, and it's gently sloping golden sands are safe for all ages. The water is crystal clear and there is plenty to
find if snorkling. Some people complained abouth the beach sellers, but if you said no thank you, they left you alone. Once they got to know you they were quite friendly. A guy called Alvin carved trinkets from coral and another seller made elaborate wind chimes. If you wished to un-wind on the beach, the hotel staff were more than happy to carry sun loungers onto the beach and place them wherever you wished. At 11.00 am, Ramone, would come around with ice cold melon. The beach is not private and at weekends is used by locals, but was never busy and guests children easily made friends with local children.
The hotel is efficently run, and the management seen everyday eating in the restaurant. The chef is Canadian, and we did not
encounter any problems with the wide choice of food. There are two restaurants. The main restaurant and a pool side restaurant. Breakfast is served in the main restaurant. Lunch is served in both restaurants, the difference been that the pool side restaurant serves sandwiches and burgers and the main restaurant serves buffet style meals, which included meat, fish, chicken and a vegi-dish everyday, along with soup, salad and various deserts. A childrens menu was also available. Dress for lunch and breakfast was casual. At dinner both restaurants serve from the same menu, the only difference been the dress code. In the main restaurant, you were required to wear trousers, collared shirt and shoes, with the pool side restaurant still remaining casual. There was a table-de-hote menu offered four times weekly, and a barbeque served twice weekly along with a welcome buffet on Thursday evenings. An al-a-carte menu is available on request. Red, white and sparkling wine was served with dinner.
The bedrooms are of a reasonable size and easily accommodated our daughter's roll-away bed, even though we has a seven foot wide king sized bed. Other facilities included a/c, celing fan, safe, fridge and coffee machine. Each block had its own ice machine. The bathroom was a little small but more than adequate, although the shower was low on pressure there was alway plently of hot water. The bathroom was stocked each day with shampoo, conditioner and shower gel and towels were plentyful and replaced twice per day. Once in the mornings and again during the nightly turn-down service, when the maid left flowers and chocolates. The room was cleaned thoroughly each day throughout. Our downstairs room had a large terrace, with two chairs, a table and two sun loungers, leading into the beautiful gardens. Like the rooms, the gardens were maintained to a very high standard.
All the staff, without exception, were friendly, providing you were friendly and polite towards them and treat them with the respect they deserved. A special thank you to Winston, Roderick, Sheldon, Josephine, Lindi, Ramone and Karen, along with all the gardeners and the staff at reception. Joanna, the Virgin representative was excellent along with the free tour provided by Virgin of the capital. This is also easily accesible by the local bus service, which is also fun. We would advise Virgin guests to take advantage of the complimentary 45 minute Swedish massage. It is the best we have ever had. The entertainment is low key and laid back. A steel band plays on Saturday evenings and a group on Tuesdays. Also a big mention to the Wednesday night crab racing, which is hosted by the multi-talented Winston. Winston is also responsible for the weekly guest-v-staff cricket match. This is light hearted affair and good fun, where you get to meet other guests and hotel members of staff. If you require more entertainment, we suggest you avoid the Coyaba, but the Caribbean as a whole, as the holiday is all about un-winding with your family and chilling out.
We do not usually return to the same restort or hotel, as the world is a big place with many places to visit, but we are sure that we will return to the Coyaba in the not too distant future as do many of its guests.
