Coyaba Beach Resort

Just returned from a fabulous two week stay. With our 7 yr old daughter and 81 yr old mother.

The initial reception was good. Sheldon, who showed us to the rooms is a star. The bathrooms are small (but with good counter top space for toiletries). The bedrooms are a reasonable size, but there is limited space storage space for clothing. The beds are very comfortable. Cable TV is provided, along with iron and ironing board, hair dryer, wall safe and a retractable clothes line above the bath. The fridge is unstocked, although you can bring drinks back from the bar and put them in. The rooms were cleaned to a high standard every day and were in our opinion more than adequate for a very good and comfortable holiday. Fresh bath and beach towels are provided daily and the plug sockets take a normal UK plug, so no need for adapter for UK guests. There is a pharmacy and supermarket (and shopping mall) within 5 minutes walk if you have forgotten anything or fancy a stroll.

The food and wine (no choice beyond Chilean red or white on the all inclusive but both were very nice. There is the option to purchase fine wines and champagne over and above this) were very good. We only dined at the Arawakabana restaurant which is a more formal dining experience (sometimes buffet or bbq, though there is always an a la carte menu you can choose from if you ask, though some dishes are at an additional cost if you are all inclusive). Here the dress code is strictly enforced. A more casual restaurant is situated beside the pool bar.

My 80+ year old mother found the grounds easy to navigate and the sea access for swimming easier than most resorts we have stayed in previously. The sea is beautifully clear for some considerable distance from shore and heaven to swim in.

The pool area was slightly disappointing - limited sunbathing loungers and shade and it tended to get taken over by children whilst we were there (though we were there during the school holiday period for the UK)- but the beach and the sea are to die for. Despite normally being pool lovers - we spent the holiday on the beach, just inside the hotel boundary which is fenced off. There are ample sun loungers and shade from numerous trees and parasols in the grounds. The beach sellers can be annoying unless you are politely firm (and don't promise to buy later in the holiday which they will not forget!), but one of the highlights of our holiday was meeting up again after 11 years with the very talented and friendly 'Alvin', who carves and sells brown (unprotected) coral jewellery.

This hotel is a gem. Gorgeous gardens, friendly staff (Leslie-Ann (special mention), Lindy, Winston, Nigel, Nekeisha, Rachael, Sheldon, Josephine, Bertie, to name a few (sorry if we have forgotten any of you!), not forgetting the very hard working and professional Violet). These staff are front of house and there are obviously numerous stalwarts behind the scenes that would deserve a mention too! Our family used to own a hotel, so we are ever sympathetic with unjustified poor reviews and feel that maybe some of the previous criticisms of this hotel perhaps fall into this camp considering the price you pay here. The service may be a bit slow on the odd occasion, but hey, this is the Caribbean and there should be no rush! Granted, the service in the Caribbean can be slower than you may experience in the Indian Ocean or America. The owners/manager are constantly evident at meal times checking on standards and service and obviously take pride in their hotel.

We have previously stayed (pre child!) at Jumby Bay, Blue Waters, Galley Bay - Antigua; Eastwinds- St Lucia, Coconut Creek - Barbados and twice at Spice Island - Grenada (but school holiday period is very expensive there hence staying at the Coyaba this time, though it still looks very nice). We had a great trip to Eastwinds again last year, but wanted to come back to Grenada which is our favourite island. The Coyaba Beach isn't in the same league on the deluxe comforts and menu choices as most of the hotels mentioned above, but represents the best value for money we have ever experienced in the Caribbean on one of the best beaches - especially if you like swimming in the sea and walking down the gorgeous beach (a brisk pre-breakfast walk down the beach and back takes around 45 minutes and will introduce you to some very friendly local people taking their early morning swims).

Other than the free (very good) half day trip into St Georges provided by Virgin Holidays (Johanna the Rep. is great), we didn't do any formal tours this time, as we have done the fabulous island tour on both previous visits. However, we did fly to Carriacou to visit the family of a friend. The 20 minute flight (costing £50 per person return) on a 9 seater plane was an amazing experience and the island itself is a jewel. Smaller and even more laid back than Grenada. Paradise Beach is a must and Sandy Island looked amazing in the distance. A trip into St Georges on the No. 1 bus will only cost 2.5 EC each way and is an experience in it's own right. Much cheaper than a taxi and very easy to do. The terminus is near the Esplanade (Duty Free) shopping Mall and you can catch the bus from the end of the road, or right outside the hotel if they drive down touting for business.

Winston the entertainments manager does a great job organising Crab races on a Wednesday evening and a cricket match (staff V guests). Other than this the entertainment is low key with a very good Steel Band on a Saturday night and a Managers Cocktail Party on a Tuesday.

Just one word of caution - the room safe swallowed my rings when they fell into a channel between the door and the safe and then disappeared inside the 'bowels' of the safe. After a mild panic which Nekeisha on Reception dealt with very swiftly, the maintenance man retrieved them for me. I envisaged them having to dismantle the safe, but the floor of the safe actually lifts out when the door is open. So don't panic!!!

We have no regrets at all about our holiday here, other than it coming to an end! We hope to be back soon.

We recently returned from a fabulous stay at The Coyaba Beach Resort Grenada. We stayed there for eight days during which time our wedding took place at the hotel. We found the staff friendly and helpful and no matter what time of day it was they always had a smile on their face an time for conversation.

On the day of arrival we were met at reception by one of the three managers/owners, which i thought was a nice touch. During the course of our stay we managed to meet with them all, where they too went out of their way to engage in conversation. If your like me and need your little buzz on the internet there are two computers based in the large hotel lounge that offer free access to to the hotel residents no matter what plan you are on, (therefore i was able to keep up with the Premiership & Champions League results whilst away.

The hotel and its grounds were excellent, the rooms were of good size and always cleaned daily, the hotel even offered a turn-down service if you so required, other hotels in the caribbean please take note of that. The gardens were refreshing to look at all day and very well maintained, as was the beach. We were situated in an upper apartment on arrival and even though the hotel accomodation was at 95% capacity, when my wife asked if we could be given a ground floor room, because she did not want to tackle a flight of stairs in her wedding dress, we were moved the following day.

I've read some unfair reviews about the food and activities available at The Coyaba. In our party that travelled out to grenada we had five children in total with ages ranging from eight - thirteen yrs. They ate everything offered and more and there were no complaints from them or other members of our party of sixteen that stayed at the hotel. All i can say to those previous reviewers is; stick to your package holidays to spain where you can indulge and gorge yourselves on fish n chips and mucky d.
As to activities the hotel offers a lovely pool with swim-up bar, I hardly got further, also water sports - including snorkeling, Hobie Cat sailing, kayaking, croquet, table tennis, shuffleboard, Golf at the Grenada Golf Club, Tennis and a full gym. (So where were they looking?) The children were never bored whilst there if anything it was harder getting them to stop for bed.

Anyone thinking of getting married in the caribbean look no further than this destination, as I can promise you Sandra the wedding planner will do a grand job. And even if you dont get married there, and why you wouldn't I dont know, ask your planner for Cullen John as your wedding photographer.

The island as a whole is a wonderful place to explore and there are many trips by land, sea or air that the hotel can organise for you. So much so that my first honeymoon is going to be spent at this most wonderful destination next year - already booked.

We've just returned from a one week stay at the Coyaba, situated on a near perfect slice of Grand Anse Beach in Grenada. From the moment we checked in until the always regretable checkout, we encountered a professional, polite staff, well kept grounds and clean environment.

Coyaba is locally run and such touches as including West Indian culinary specialties on the menu as callaloo soup, bake and salt fish souse add to the flavor of one's stay. Of course, there are also other meal options, including a Saturday night BBQ that featured chicken, ribs and fish. Dining on fresh BBQ while listening to live steel drum music with the cooling breeze of the sea was a wonderful way to spend our first night at Coyaba.

We did not opt for the all-inclusive simply because we didn't spend that much time on the property except for breakfast and the occasional dinner. There are two restaurants, one formal (The Arawakabana), one casual (The Carbet). The breakfast buffet is served at the Arawakcabana and consisted of made to order eggs, fresh fruit, standard continental fair, pancakes, bacon/sausage, salt fish souse, cereal, juice and yogurt. The cost was 20 EC $ for the full Grenadian (Access to all breakfast foods) or 16EC $ for the continental. The exchange rate is 2.67 EC per US dollar so breakfast did not break the bank.

Dinners at the Arawakabana require a reservation and are also buffet style. The Carbet has no dress code or reservation policy and features an a la carte menu. Room service is also available.

Our room was on the second floor and featured a balcony overlooking the property, right out onto the sea. The walk to the sea was through gardens and trees and out onto the beach. A major selling point for Coyaba is that it truly is beachfront. No crossing of a road to make it to the soft sand of Grand Anse.

Towels were provided along with beach chairs. Keep in mind that all beaches in Grenada are public and you will be visited by various beach vendors. Some sell coconut water, others sarongs and spice necklaces. None were overly aggressive and would move on to the next tourist with a polite "No thanks". There was also a vendor selling shells and handmade goods but he did not roam the beach, instead setting up shop near a tree. We purchased several conches from him and he seemed to be doing a brisk business.

The water was extremely gentle for most of our stay. In fact, one could easily walk out for several feet from the shore and still have sand to stand on and sit as if in a tub. Clear and clean, the waters of Grand Anse were soothing after a day of sight seeing.

The room was tastefully decorated with a king sized bed, tv cabinet, closet space and remote control AC. Trial size bottles of shampoo and soap were provided in the bathroom. Water pressure was somewhat weak in the shower.

We requested assistance once for an extra pillow from the desk and our request was quickly met. A tour desk is in the lobby and staffed from 10am-5pm. Highly recommended is a tour with Elwin, who took us to Annandale Falls, a rum shop, Grand Etang National Park and Fort George.

Two computers are available in the lobby with Internet access. The swimming pool features a swimup bar but quite honestly we never went in as the easy access to the sea was hard to resist. The pool did not appear to be open at night.

Another benefit of Coyaba's location is being right across the street from the Spiceland Mall. The mall features an IGA supermarket with a wide selection of groceries. I recommend stocking up on bottled water for the inroom refigerator. IGA also sells hot food for an inexpensive snack. The Spiceland Mall has a food court as well, with Chopstix Chinese cuisine and Grillmaster takeout featuring local food in addition to burgers/fries/sandwiches. Highly recommended is the chicken roti from Grillmaster! Rounding out the food options at Spiceland is a KFC.

A little further along the road is an area known as Grenada's "Wall Street". Here you will find several banks and ATMs. There's also an ATM at the Spiceland Mall.

Past the Spiceland Mall by a soccer field, still within walking distance, is Le Marquis Plaza, featuring several shops and restaurants. LaBoulangerie had surprisingly good pizza and Le Chateau had great lambi (conch) for dinner.

Minibuses are a great way to get to St. George's and are readily available by the Coyaba. Fare for two people to St. George's was 5 EC dollars.

Tennis, croquet, table tennis and shuffleboard were available free of charge at the Coyaba.

While the grounds of Coyaba are pleasant and scenic, I highly recommend going out for a day and seeing the rest of the island.
And after a long day of visiting the island, the Coyaba made for the perfect resting spot.

I have recently spent a week with my family in Coyaba Beach Resort, i thought it was really lovely on the photos but it is better in real life! i had some issues with the room as i am a child and i had to sleep with my brother! When we booked the hotel it clearly said that there were 2 children and 2 adults! At first we thought it was one problem and that the hotel would be nicer! so we went for a walk round the hotel and found the beach, they say it is one of the best beaches in the Caribbean but it is not one of the safest (as my mother stepped on a sea erchant and a weird man came up to her and nearly set her foot on fire!!! This made her feel ill for most of the hoilday! this was a couple of days on!) so we carryed on looking and we saw the pool it looked really realxing and also had a bar as a bonus it had stools in and there was a bar near so we could order drinks but watch out for a bar maid called PAULINE (lol alex) we looked at the menu for dinner and it is really not child friendly and me and my brother had to order of the childrens menu! which HOTDOGS! Overall the hotel is lovely but ask if the pool is fixed cause i went green from swimming in it! and watch out for any sea erchants!

Kind Regards,
Hannah

“Great Holiday”

Coyaba Beach Resort

May 26, 2008
5/5 found this review helpful

Just returned from the Grenada having spent two weeks at the Coyaba beach resort Grenada. We flew out on the XL air flight, which can only be described as a functional way of flying anywhere. Take a sandwich on the plane and get some drinks/snacks at the terminal before you fly, we weren't given anything for the first 7 hours, and then the food was poor. Having flown a couple of times on both XL and Virgin, the difference is whether you want to go on a bus or pay more for the coach trip, both get you to the same place, one slightly more comforable.

The hotel was very good by Caribbean standards, we initialy had a room which had a great sea view. We moved room after the first night as whilst we had an excellent view, we had an adjoning room, and the couple next door were noisy. Our room was at the back of the hotel, in the garden view area, which whilst you couldn't see the sea, was just as nice, and with no adjoining door. The hotel has a very relaxed atmosphere, 99% of the staff were excellent, genuinely friendly. Food was good and you can kid yourself you aren't putting any weight on by walking up and down the 2.5 mile beach, which we did most days.

I opted for the 10 dive pack with Eco Dive, and its probably the best diving I've experienced in the caribbean, lots of wrecks, losts of fish, and Elton who normally works as the boat captain managed to spot a seahorse one day, which I managed to photograph.

On the trip front, we did two, the island trip, which was interesting, but the best trip was that to the Grenadines. We took the small plane to Union Island, where we joined the Scaramouche, with another 5 couples and sailed to Mayreau, Tobago Cays and finally Palm Island. You can snorkell at each location, but by far the best was the Tobago Cays where a multitude of turtles could be seen feeding on the sea grass. One bit of advise, take a pair of sea shoes as there are sea urchins everywhere, and if youv'e got some, take you own fins as the boat only had masks and snorkels.
