“WOW - Amazing is an Understatement”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2013

My wife and I had the pleasure of spending 10 days at Twelve Degrees North. My friend had stayed there in the spring (See review by DawnB501) and raved about the place. My wife and I were originally going to go to Jamaica but changed our trip based on Dawn's feedback. We figured if it was half as good as Dawn said, that we would be in for a treat. It was as good as Dawn described and oh, did we get a treat!

The place is simply beautiful, it is landscaped immaculately. There are flowering shrubs, flowering trees, perennials, annuals, walking paths, benches where one can look in all directions and see splendor. The rooms are spacious, relaxing, enjoyable to be in, and peaceful. You can hear the ocean from your room and look out and see boats anchored in the bay. The pool was clean and had the perfect water temperature. There is a long pier with benches and places to sit along the way. We snorkeled off of it, watched sunsets, and read books and relaxed on it. Then there are the hammocks! We spent hours relaxing in the hammocks, reading, napping, talking and unwinding!

The people are exceptionally friendly and competent. The owner (Joe) meets you the first night with his delicious rum punch. He is friendly and super knowledgeable and equally helpful. Joe helped us with money exchange, where to go shopping, who to call for tours, taxis, and where to eat. All of his advice was spot on, and more importantly, made for an exceptionally fun vacation and one that allowed us to really experience Grenada and its people and sites. In addition to Joe, all of the staff at Twelve Degrees North were wonderful. The groundskeepers knew all the plants, with one person having been there for upwards of 20 years. He had planted many of the shrubs and trees himself! Our room keeper and cook (Donna) really cared for and about us. She took interest in our trip and worked to meet our needs. She cooked delicious foods, kept our place immaculately clean, and gave us privacy when we needed it. She too provided a lot of advice on places to see, shop and swim.

The food on the Island is very tasty, nice flavors and new fruits we never had before. We ate at many restaurants with the "Beach House" being our ultimate favorite. If you get to Grenvile you have to eat at a small place called "Good Food" that was also great. The Beach House is high end and pricey (although worth every penny as it is both romantic and delicious) and the "Good Food" place is fine native fare for almost nothing! I also recommend simply telling your room staff to cook their favorite dishes, you wont be sad you did so.

The Grenadian people were very friendly and super helpful and kind. I never worried about my safety, never experienced any problems, and every time we took a wrong turn, or missed a turn, wherever we stopped we always received friendly helpful advice. I really cant say enough about the friendly people.

The island itself is beautiful and diverse. It is worth going on different tours to see the rum distilleries, the different towns and cities and experience the diversity of the different regions on the island. Just ask Joe and he will help you plan your trip once you are there. We snorkeled with Aquanauts and highly recommend them. They do scuba diving too. If and when we go back they will surely get our business.

One of the last tings I will say is that the other guests at Twelve Degrees North also made our trip a true pleasure. It is funny where one finds new friends, yet we found one in a room two doors down. We have been emailing ever since returning home.

Our trip was one of those amazing once in a lifetime great experiences. The travel was easy. The accommodations delightful. The food was delicious. The island scenic, friendly, and interesting. The people were grand!

Room Tip: Ask for Donna!

This small and individual development in a beautiful and secluded setting gives spacious and comfortable accommodation with a housekeeping service. Close to the airport and easy to find there is a lovely garden with pool leading down to a private beach and jetty with good snorkelling. Our host was very hospitable and informative and Candice, our housekeeper was delightful and an excellent cook. We spent four days there and it was an excellent base to explore the area around St George and the beaches on the windward side. We would have been happy to chill out for longer.

In March 2013, my husband and I spent 10 days at Twelve Degrees North in Grenada. We were greeted when we arrived by the owner, Joesph Gaylord and a bottle of his "special recipe" rum punch! It was a wonderful start to what turned out to be the best vacation we have taken in years! Joe not only met us when we arrived, he provided us with a phone to use during our stay, he made arrangements for a rental car to be brought out to us, gave us the name of a very nice taxi driver for the days we didn't have a rental car, took us on a short tour to Grand Anse Beach and the surrounding area and to the Spiceland Mall.

The resort is set in a quiet residential neighborhood not too far from town. It is a peaceful and relaxing place right on Prickly Bay with a dock from which we could swim and snorkel. The deck over the water is ringed by comfortable hammocks hanging in the trees. If we didn't want to go in the ocean, we could swim in the pool instead.

One of the best parts of our stay was, Donna, the woman who attended to our room during our stay. Donna is the most amazing cook! We looked forward to eating dishes of West Indian cuisine, and we were not disappointed. Whatever we purchased, whether it was chicken, pork, fish or lambi, Donna made the most delicious meals. Her Callaloo soup, Pumpkin soup and fresh fruit salads were some of our favorite dishes. Not only did Donna cook fabulous meals during our stay, she made us feel right at home!

As far as Grenada goes, it is a great island to visit! We have traveled to many of the Caribbean islands over the years, but hands-down, Grenada has been our favorite. The people are extremely friendly. Everywhere we went, people greeted us with a smile and a hello and were happy to tell us how grateful they are to America for the 1983 intervention!

If you are looking for a laid-back, relaxing place to spend some time in the Caribbean, I highly recommend staying at Twelve Degrees North. We can't wait to return for another stay!!

My girlfriend and I recently spent a week at 12 Degrees North. Not only was this an amazingly welcoming and relaxing place but the reasonable price of a room included a full time cook and maid. Highly recommended!

A recent trip to the beautiful island of Grenada was so relaxing we had to comment to others. The best part was the charming apartment resort where we stayed, a grouping of view-positioned units in an immaculately groomed compound called appropriately 12 Degrees North. Each comes with a very accommodating housekeeper/cook who provides two served meals and will leave dinner to be heated. There are water activities such as kayacking, paddle boarding and sailing and a lovely little reef off a long dock for snorkeling. Adults only are allowed, providing a quiet atmosphere. The weather is amazing. Every day is another beautiful day in paradise. We are hooked!

>My husband and I have just counted the number of times, 22, we have visited Grenada since our honeymoon trip in 1969. The beauty of the island and the generosity of its people encouraged my parents to live here for many, many years. Sadly, most of their generation is gone but there is still a place to stay, a jewel to be prized that offers a unique combination of comfort, quality and hospitality: Twelve Degrees North. We have stayed here four times now. We oogle fish on the reef. We drink to the sunsets. We cheer the green flash. We eat to our taste yet I don’t need to cook. We have made good friends with our neighbors while remaining and maintaining our independence. This year we arranged to be in our apartment at the same time as old, close but distant friends. They stayed in the apartment next door. Again, Twelve Degrees provides the perfect combination of intimacy and independence. We can share and have our own space, relaxing to our own rhythm. Fantastic! If ever you reach this latitude, this spot in this wonderful world, you will be sure to share our enthusiasm.

Joseph Gaylord owns and operates the boutique hotel Twelve Degrees North with eight or ten lovely suites. The property is beautifully situated and maintained on a lovely private beach on Prickly Bay about a ten minute drive from the airport and a twenty minute drive from downtown St George. There is a lovely wooden dock and a long pier with a cabana that stretches out into the harbor. In front a constantly shifty tableau of sail boats sail by or rock anchored in the cooling breezes. There is a lovely pool, kayaks, surfboards, and a Sun Fish sailboat at the disposition of the guest at no additional charge. By walking down the steps at the end of the pier you are immediately surrounded by the reef.

Our flight was late but Joe had uncomplainingly waited an hour at our suite door to greet us and let us in well past ten pm. Awaiting us in our refrigerator were fresh made sandwiches, a pot of homemade callilou soup and bottle of rum punch complements of Joe. That was only the beginning. The next day Joe personally drove us around, showing us where the local food stores were, how to find the bank, some nice local restaurants, and drove us to a superb out of the way look out for a magnificent view of St. George. Later in the course of our stay, he showed us the best places to snorkel, took us to see a monument to an downed US aviator who's family he had befriended, and even took us out for a boat trip on his 35' motorboat.

And the best was yet to come. That morning we met Belinda with her huge Grenadian smile. The rates at Twelve Degrees North include a personal cook/housekeeper who is happy to cook three meals a day as well as keeping the suite spic-and-span and doing any laundry required. From time to time we would give her 20 EC and she would use it to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables that she picked up on the way to work. The going rate for tipping these Grenadian cook/housekeepers is $5US / per person / per day (i.e. $10 US a day for us.) Frankly we wanted to take Belinda home with us to Pennsylvania.

We wanted to really experience Grenadian cooking and wonderful local fare awaited us every day. One night our dinner consisted of homemade pumpkin soup with pickled pig snouts and tail, sliced bananas and potatoes accompanies by home made banana bread. Another night we had the delicious national dish Oil Down and dumplings. We've had home made fry bread, red snapper and tuna steaks fresh from the fish market, and each morning's meal begins with a fresh bowl of fruit. (Andrew Zimmern is our hero...) Of course if you want more European or American fare, Belinda is certainly capable of cooking those too.

In no time at all, Joe and Belinda made us feel like we were part of the family, and by chatting with Belinda every day, we've got a real sense of what life here on Grenada is like for the Grenadians.

We snorkel all over the world. The snorkeling off Joe's dock is quite adequate. Nonetheless, once Joe had determined that we were not likely to drown ourselves he told us where to go for the best snorkeling on the island and then drove us there to show us the way the first time. It is a five minute drive, across L'Anse aux Epines point to the Secret Harbor Marina. From there it is about a 3/4 mile kayak paddle to a circular reef out beyond the point and the channel to the harbor. The reef there is variegated, from shallow to quite deep, with columns of corral a dozen feet high in places and narrow channels to swim through. This reef is home to as much sea life as we saw anywhere on the island.

A word about the suites at 12 Degrees North. Joe has been a hotelier on the island for 46 years or so. He personally designed the hotel. So for example the suites have great cross ventilation and effective ceiling fans. There certainly wasn't any need for AC despite the 80+ degree temperatures outside. Our suite had a large bedroom, living room, small kitchen and bathroom, a private veranda, and like all the suites, a great view. We felt very spoiled.

There is no doubt that any time we return to Grenada we will be staying at Twelve Degrees North. In fact, we liked it so much that we extended our stay here during this trip.

Carol and Markus
