“Perfect luxury honeymoon”

Calabash Hotel & Villas

Ok, you could go cheaper in Grenada, but for absolute relaxation and luxury you could not find a better antidote than the Calabash.

With breakfast served on your terrace each morning and little touches like the morning fruit plate, afternoon tea and sandwiches, canapés and the weekly cocktail party you are well looked after. You can choose to take the fully inclusive options but we felt that we would like some independence. The Rhodes restaurant is top quality and Stella Artois expensive, but we also used several local restaurants like The Aquarium (top lobster) and The Beach House.

I can confirm other reviews here that the rooms are excellent, especially the pool room we had.

What made the Calabash was the quality and friendliness of the people who run it, particular thanks to Noreen, Bernard, Michael and Elsa.

This was our honeymoon, however, the hotel is the perfect place to organise your wedding on the beach, we saw only one in the whole 2 weeks we were there, unlike the conveyer belt weddings other resorts specialise in.

We've been coming to Grenada for the past 8 years and love the island. When our original hotel closed down, we searched for a new place to stay. Are we glad we found the Calabash. It's a delightful small hotel for people looking to have some peace and quiet. The surroundings are lush, the breakfasts are served on your balcony every morning (at the time you request).
Staff is always professional and very friendly. We've made friends with several of them over the past 2 years.
The beach area is very nice. Yes, there is grass in the water, but that isn't such a big deal. The water is pretty calm and there is some snorkeling along by the rocky wall. Since the property is relatively small, there are no crowds on the beach.
The rooms were recently renovated, which has made the property even nicer. A great place for a romantic vacation.

Of note, this isn't the best property for families with young children or people who want non-stop action. They do provide entertainment in the high season (and sometimes in the low season). The concierge also arranges tours and sailing trips, which were very enjoyable. We can't wait to go back.

This is my fourth visit to the Calabash and why do I keep returning?

Warm friendly staff, comfortable (air conditioned) accommodation and great food. Service is generally excellent and the hotel allows complete relaxation, rooms private and very quiet. Rooms are laid out in a semi circle so all rooms have views of the Caribbean across the gardens (max 33 rooms) each in detached units with one room above. Some have plunge pools (recommended) and rear terrace for extra privacy.

Breakfast is prepared individually for you each day and cooked at a small kitchen attached to your room. Only criticism is the ladies preparing breakfast can be a little noisy at times but not something you would not particularly complain about.

Overall an excellent relaxing holiday.

Stayed at the Calabash from 26th April - 3rd May and my wife and I loved it. This was to celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary and the hotel is better than before.

The room was nicely decorated, spacious and well furnished. Breakfast was fine without being spectacular and it was nice to have it on the large balcony.

The gardens are really nice with plenty of birds, crabs and calabshes. The beach is also very nice set in a lovely and not (yet) over developed bay. There is weed in the sea but we didn't find it to be a problem. Lunch at the beach bar was very pleasant and a fruit juice is given to you at 11:00. Afternoon tea at 4:00 was a nice diversion before returning to the beach for a last swim and relax.

Canopies are provided at six o'clock before you eat. The Rhodes restaurant is superb with a good menu supplemented by daily specials. Service was also very good.

We hired a car for two days. For great beaches goto La Sagesse and Morne Rouge not forgetting the Grand Anse. Driving around the island is recommended because it is very beautiful but signing is poor so expect to get lost. Visit the capital St Georges and the North of the island (Ladera beach near Sauternes is recommended).

Lovely relaxing time - as required.

For $400 US/night we had pretty high expectations. The location is not great for public transport and getting around. However if this is not important to you then you may not be disappointed. Included in our rate was afternoon tea which comprised of a few measly sandwiches and marble cake,
and breakfast prepared and served by our personal maid on our balcony. The breakfast menu choice was fairly limited, and we generally prefer large selection buffet breakfast . Again it depends what you prefer. I also stayed in South City Plaza and Coyaba in Grenada and I would rate the Coyaba beach resort way above the Calabash. Some other points are that the pool was tiny and the gym really does need updating at the Calabash.
