“Fabulous holiday, you won't be disappointed!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

We had 10 days at the Spice Island hotel. It was so incredibly relaxing. The staff were so lovely and looked after you brilliantly. There was a genuine concern to ensure you had an excellent holiday and so nothing was too much trouble. The accommodation was very comfortable, clean and spacious. The food and house wine was great. The sea was (very unusually it has to be said) a bit choppy so we sadly didn't snorkel or sail but the beach and swimming pool were lovely so it didn't really matter too much. If you do a trip, see if you can get Danny as your driver as he was very knowledgeable when he took us round the island and a really lovely chap. Cricket at the National Stadium was also great fun. I would highly recommend Grenada and Spice Island - it's the best West Indies holiday we've had so far (comparing to St Lucia, Barbados and Jamaica).

Room Tip: We might go for a beach side room next time, we think it was probably worth the extra cost to be abl...

This instance is the third visit to Spice Island Beach Resort, Grenada and we think it timely to update our views. The resort is located on the Grand Anse Beach and whilst the section of the beach that Spice Island sits on is very sandy and used mostly by hotel residents, bear in mind all beaches on the island are for public use. Locals, other tourists and daytrippers from the cruise ships decamp to the beach regularly and it becomes a very busy place. Additionally, the hotel is next door to the University campus and other holiday accommodation making the beach quite noisy now with loud music evident particularly at the weekends. Whilst this is not the hotel's fault this has to be taken into account when judging a "luxury" hotel.
The fabric of the hotel itself is comfortable and relaxing with dining, bar and swimming pool areas perfect for a restful holiday. However, our Seagrape beach suit really needed a bit of upgrading (no7) as it looked a little tired. That said the aircon was efficient enough to cope with 30c temperatures if a little noisy.
As with most hotel locations we have visited in the Caribbean, service quality can be patchy and whether it's shyness or not, some of the staff appear to not be terribly welcoming or friendly. However, there are notable exceptions here. As usual dinner is up to a high standard in terms of food and reliability of service, but breakfast proved troublesome. On two occasions we had to wait an inordinate time for our cooked breakfast to arrive. Poached egg on toast - 35 minutes and on another day two boiled eggs (4 minutes cooking) the best part of 25 minutes and the boiled eggs looked as though they had been cooked for 25 minutes. We took this up with the service manager who admitted the service regime had to go back to the drawing board. In fairness service did improve after that.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms on the South side as they are quieter

In February 2013, my wife and I visited once again Spice Island Resort, the fourth time to be precise. We left the UK in the snow and arrived in beautiful sunshine, Ryan Hopkins, son of Sir Royston was there to greet us and straight away made us feel at home. Straight away virtually every staff member we bumped into (not literally) knew who we were. What was also pleasing was that the majority of the staff were the same ones we met on our first visit here. We were then shown to our Seagrapes suite which was the same one we had stayed at on our three previous visits. We were not disappointed as suite 7 is a perfect position in relation to the beach.
The extremely high standards at the hotel had not only been maintained but in most cases had been surpassed. The food seems to get better and better, thanks to Fabian and his team. The bar staff appear to have telepathic ability in relation to when to refill your glass of wine and lets face it there is nothing worse than either an overly enthusiastic waiter or someone who forgets all together!! The chap who refilled our minibar was far more efficient in predicting the weather than weather.com. Little things like this where staff bend over backwards to make your stay memorable just puts this hotel head and shoulders above any other hotel I have stayed at in the Caribbean.

I spent a week at Spice Island with my husband and we had a truly wonderful holiday.
The service in the hotel was perfect from the moment we arrived until the moment we left. We booked a Sea Grape Suite with the all-inclusive package. We arrived late afternoon and were welcomed by some lovely staff at reception, given an ice-cold towel and a delicious cocktail. After zero paperwork we were taken to our room by a member of the staff, who en-route explained all the areas of the hotel, services, etc. The room was beautifully decorated and perfectly maintained. The bathroom was huge, a bath we could both fit into, large separate shower, twin sinks, quality toiletries and loads of soft, fluffy white towels. There was lots of storage space in the room (we were a bit short on coat hangers), a safe, iron and board, and well-lit mirrors. The room (room 1) had twin queen beds, we would have preferred a king, and in the end we just slept in one of the beds, so the other was a waste of space and to make matters worse my husband kept banging his toe on the other bed as the wooden base was wider than the mattress and in the dark was difficult to navigate! The room had a flat screen TV, clock with i-pod dock, a sofa, good lighting, and of course a sea view, although from Room 1 the view is very slightly obscured by the water sports building. The outdoor space was nice with a sofa area as well as a table and chairs. There were two loungers and a large hammock in the "garden area". The in-room wi-fi worked perfectly and was relatively fast.
Breakfast at Spice Island is a buffet of fruits, cereals and pastries and then a hot menu. Our coffee was served in a cafetiere, so there was always plenty. I loved the fact that there were fish dishes on the menu. The Fish Creole was outstanding. The daily local juice and the fresh fruit could not be better. The restaurant is right by the beach, and there is plenty of space between tables.
Lunch is served in a more informal bar/restaurant area, as well as the standard items on the menu, there was a daily Roti, a Catch of the day, Soup of the day and Chef's special, so there was always plenty of variety. The desserts were very good and it was nice to see sorbets and ice creams with caribbean flavours.
Afternoon tea is also served but as we often had a late lunch we never got to try it, although other guests said it was very good with all the trimmings.
We quickly got used to having a pre-dinner cocktail at the bar and it was nice to chat to other guests. The cocktail list was good and the staff very attentive and quick to ask if you needed a refill! During the day the bar staff patrolled the beach , handing out cold towels and taking drink orders, however far away you were from the actual bar.
Dinner was perfect every single night, starting with the amuse-bouche, aperitif, soup or salad, main course and dessert, ending with coffee and petit-fours. Every single dish was perfectly cooked, well-presented, and served with a smile by attentive staff. We were never rushed. There was always an interesting selection of breads, including sweet potato and pumpkin. We are not wine drinkers so it was nice to be offered plenty of sparkling water with the meals, with the glass being constantly refilled. My favourite dishes had to be the Sushi-grade tuna and the double baked Chocolate soufflé.
I had a facial and my husband a massage at the Spa, both treatments were excellent, in lovely surroundings and pampered by lovely staff.
The actual hotel is right on the beach, the pool is pleasant and has salt water so there is no nasty chlorine taste. It's shallow in some areas so is nice for non-swimmers. There are plenty of seating areas all around the pool and bar area so it never felt crowded. There is a double boutique just outside reception. A short walk down the road there is a small shopping centre where we bought delicious Grenada chocolate and newspapers.
All the staff at Spice Island seem to enjoy their jobs, the smiles are genuine, I could mention lots of names, but to be fair every single member of the staff did a wonderful job, even the guy cleaning the pool chatted to us, they all learnt our names but at the same time were very discreet. In fact we didn't bump into our room maid until our final day.
I will certainly return to Spice Island and I have added it to my list of Top Caribbean Favourites along with The Sandpiper (Barbados) and East Winds (St. Lucia). It would be very difficult to improve this hotel, the owners have certainly got it right and it shows in the service and quality.
If you want good food, excellent service and beautiful surroundings, this is the place.

Room Tip: If you want a room right on the beach go for a Sea Grape Suite, but do ask for a queen or king which...

There is no doubt that this is an excellent hotel and if you stay in a hotel like this you come to realise they are thinking 'how can we make this better' as a general theme instead of 'how can we cut corners and make more margin'.It is for this reason the hotel will always do well.Sure its not cheap but if its cheap you want dont bother. The staff are good, well trained and attentive without being irritating. The food is very good and does, unlike some hotels, miss the opportunity to introduce local tastes, local menus and local spices and produce. The rooms are well thought through, well maintained and are modern.
If i had any concerns the service in the restaurant could be a little slow sometimes and the noise of a Getto blaster coming up from the local sports field/beach club (which is nothing to do with the hotel) was definitely getting on my nerves on 2 of the 7 days.
All in all excellent service, great location and a truly good hotel. My second trip as well.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask about existance of noisy beach music,it could have been a one off though so best a...

Wonderful location on Grand Anse Beach and very friendly and helpful staff.
As far as accommodation is concerned the choice of suite  is a matter of personal preference.
Our original choice when we first booked with Virgin Holidays Hip Hotels  was a Sea Grape suite directly on the beach. We needed to bring forward the timing of our holiday. There were no Sea Grape Suites available for the revised dates so we chose an Anthurium Suite.
We were extremely happy with the revised choice which on balance we preferred to the Sea Grape Suites partly because of the additional privacy and additional tranquillity and partly because of the overall layout and facilities of the Anthurium Suites.
The only disappointment was the food which fell short of and did not live up to the great expectations generated by reading the  reviews on TA  ( or live up to the comparison of the food at an all inclusive hotel on a different Caribbean island a couple of years ago.) The standard of food was very  variable - some highs but too many lows.We are familiar with the whole spectrum of food from basic pub fare through to fine dining and love to sample the local food abroad.Too often we found that the chef's  " creations " were  a mismatch of conflicting tastes and flavours which masked  somewhat the fish or meat which we were supposed to be eating.
The lunch menu hardly changed at all during our stay and whilst there were specials each day the description of the specials  delivered verbally by the restaurant staff  sometimes  did not accurately describe the dish.
For the most part the service was prompt and attentive but at times was amazingly slow even for the Caribbean and on many occasions we had to ask again when our order or request did not arrive.
Despite the slight disappointments  referred to above we did have a very enjoyable and relaxing holiday in very acceptable accommodation in a superb location .

This is a beautiful intimate resort on the best beach on the Island. Even before we arrived, we received warm welcoming emails after we had made a request in advance. The front desk staff all knew our names when we arrived as did the restaurant staff. The owners are on site most days. The grounds are immaculate. We were treated to a sunset cocktail party at the home of the owner Lord Royston Hopkin. We enjoyed our daily walks along the beach. The hotel provided a free tour of the Island. Most days we went off on excursions for half days. The Island is beautiful and there are lots of things to see. One day we took the local bus into town. We had lunch at BB's Crabback Restaurant which is located on the harbour. Be sure to try their "high octane" rum punch. We found Lisa's jewellery store with hand-made silver pieces. They made some silver bracelets for our granddaughters.

We would definately return to Spice Island Resorts.

Room Tip: Our room was one of the Oleander Suites. It was a large suite with private patio. Very quiet area.
