“A bit of heaven in Grenada”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

I love this hotel. The rooms are great, service impeccable and location cannot be beat. I particularly love the fact that there is so much local food on the menu. They've done some very interesting things with local fruit and food that many Caribbean restaurants and hotels can learn a bit from. Some upgrading can be done, given the price, but I assume that there is some wear and tear from being on the beach that can't be avoided entirely. The owner's cocktail hour is particularly nice. Great hotel and excellent service!

We decided to spend just a few days over New Years with our college age kids and wanted to go somewhere we hadn't been before. Our agent recommended Grenada and this resort so we signed on.

The good:

10 minute ride from the airport with fast immigration and luggage unloading.

Impeccably friendly service. The type that is hard to find in the Caribbean. Folks knew our name within a day. Every request was fulfilled. I read a few reviews that referenced slow service. We've been almost everywhere in the Caribbean and while its clear that the sense of urgency is different here, the service speed is more than acceptable. The food is excellent. The beach is very clean and the water is fantastic. The all-inclusive option truly is. Meals, premium liquors and wines at no charge. Only the wine list costs extra. The food is excellent and imaginative. One single restaurant in a large open area. Casual at breakfast, fine at lunch and elegant at dinner. Locals are friendly (and often use the same beach as they are all public..but they respect the privacy of the beachfront suites and leave you to your own space). Unlike many islands we've frequented, the local population is friendly and has more of a "isn't it a great day for all of us to be at the beach" attitude.

The things to know:

Not much to do on the island. You come here to relax, lay on the beach and eat and drink. Nothing else. We did a short evening cruise in the harbor arranged by the hotel and it was very pleasant (beware of the rum punch though..very strong!).

The resort is small and nice..but the far end (units 1,2,3 and 4) are near an apartment building and a dive shop that has a lot of local activity and sound during the day. It didn't bother us, but I can see others being put off paying this much for a beachfront suite that borders an areas that is active. If so, ask for beach units of #5 or higher. The enclosed suites with pools weren't available so we took a beachfront one. Having been here now, I'd recommend the beach. Pass on the more expensive pool equipped suites as they are off of the beach.

In the end, it's a long way to go to a very nice beach, small but very nice resort with very friendly people and not much to do. That was our goal and we were satisfied.

We'd return..but for a trip of 3-5 days max.

Room Tip: Avoid beachfront suites 1,2,3 and 4. They are too close to an adjacent apartment building and the d...

We never normally return to the same location more than once however after such a good holiday last year we decided to try it again this year and it did not disappoint. The food, service, suites were just as good as previously and of course the location is excellent in any event. There is not much more to say than that other than to point out Grenada is a wonderful island where total commercialisation, unlike elsewhere in the region, has thankfully not yet taken hold. I would highly recommend this hotel it is not cheap but is a wonderful product.

Room Tip: We have stayed in both Seagrape and Oleander seaview both a very good similar in quality and space i...

he title of this review was shamelessly stolen from a couple we met at the resort, and I think it sums Spice Island up perfectly. Myself and my fiancee arrived at the resort ( we were getting married there) to be offered an immediate upgrade as our Seagrape suite wasnt quite ready. Although the upgrade was several tiers above what we originally we booked, we wanted to be on the beach, which these fabulous suites are. We waited less than 30 mins for the room to be ready, but I immediately thought this is a place that cares about it's guests.

Needless to say the 2 weeks we had at the resort were wonderful. The wedding was super and we are really glad we chose this resort to get married, the staff were very attentive and helpful and it all went very smoothly and exceeded our expectations.

As for the hotel itself it must have one the best locations on the island, it is right on the beach. The beach itself is public, which I agree with , but its never busy. Food was very good breakfast you can eat as much as you like have a freshly cooked breakfast, lunch very much traditional food, all lovely local produce ( dont think I have ever eaten such a variety of fish).
Dinner was more geared toward fine dining and delicious also. I am guessing the chef may have been a pasty chef at some point , as the desserts on many occasions were delicious. I have eaten in many Michelin star restaurants and while the food isnt quite up there, and it doesnt need to be, it is certainly heading in that direction.

Finally , the one thing about Spice Island, and you can read this in the other reviews , that sets it aside from other establishments, is the level of service and staff. Nothing is too much trouble, always happy to help, and being addressed by my name every day was also a nice touch. Organisations die or fail by their people, and the staff at Spice Island are probably the best hotel staff I have ever encountered anywhere, a merry Xmas to all.

( I would recommend this hotel to couples/honeymooners , very relaxing and peaceful, as is the island of Grenada itself)

Room Tip: sea grape suite

In all our trips to the carribean I have never felt the urge to review. We were meant to be heading to the now defunct la source but we opted for spice island; thank god we did. The food is the main highlight. No nasty buffets, no surly attitudes every meal was like something from a top london restaurant.

Unlike other all inclusives, guests are not swilling beer at 11am - sophistication is the norm.

In addition this place seems totally at ease with gay visitors as there were quite a few mature gay couples. Can't wait to return to this oasis.

The Spice Island Resort is run by the Hopkins family and they really do put everything into making this hotel very special. We had a suite with its own pool and it really was heaven. The staff are extremely attentive and very keen to please. The food in the restaurant is excellent. I recommend the all inclusive which is very good value.

What a fantastic place, they certainly have picked up the game and run with it, staff were great, food was different but very good, the grounds people keep everything on top form and there was nothing that they couldn't do for us. We stayed in Rm 26 Almond Suite and it was just what I would return to. We were there from 15th November till the 29th November 2012.
The beach is clean and makes for a nice walk and is very safe. A polite no thank you to the beach vendors is all that is need and they leave you alone.
We met a star on the staff called Crystell, she stands out with a beautiful personality and extremely helpful.
We were fully inclusive and were upgraded as we had a Wedding Vows renewal and everything went fantastically well, we even got Delia from the Dive shop on the beach to attend and she dressed to impress... I dive with The Aquanauts and they are a the group that I have dived with every year for the last three years.
I was booked to be at La Source, it closed and did us a favour, we paid the extra and so pleased we did. Only downfall, the Mosquitos in the evening can be a nuisance and if they get in your room there was no electronic device to zap them.
Would we go back... You bet we would.

Room Tip: I can't justify the higher prices for any rooms greater than the Almond Suites.
