“Not the Best, Not the Worst”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013

There were 8 of us. We sailed into Grenada aboard the S/V Windspirit. We came onto the island and hired a local area guide to give us a day trip to see the sights, one of which was the River Antoine Rum Distillery. There is a $2 US entry fee. It was worth $2, but perhaps not much more. The entry fee buys one a guided tour of the property. At the time of our visit, the distillery was not active. This distillery exists pretty much as it has since its inception. There is very little modern equipment. There is a bottling machine...for one bottle at a time. The caps are screwed on manually. Frankly, the process looks unsanitary. At the end of the tour we were offered a sample of Rivers Rum. Not particularly smooth, but certainly strong. We skipped the 150 proof version. If you find yourself in the neighborhood, this attraction may be worth visiting, but only if. I believe that there are other rum distilleries on the island. Perhaps one of them would be a better bet.

“Industrial Archaeology at its best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2013

In fact best if you start with a shot of their rum as the whole process belies the need for any of the ridiculous 'ealth and safety we put up with in the UK. You see the whole process from sugar cane to distilled jungle juice. The whole set up is totally fascinating - actually made more interesting as a main bearing in the cane crusher had gone and spare for old machinery have to be made. Rum was about to start being made from stocks of molasses.
Pay a visit - if you can find it. Road maps have limited information, I have only seen directions around the capital so drive carefully. $2 entry fee.

“Beyond words”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2012

You will never see anything like this in the US. No FDA to worry about, everything is live and real. You can stand a foot away from a man rolling the sugar cane, you can see every part of the rum making proccess. Super cool and almost beyond words. If you aren't speechless after the tour, you will be after the 150 proof rum sample. This very authentic tour is a must do.

“Pretty basic but worth a look.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2012

Part of the charm of Grenada is that it’s not over commercialised and that attractions you expect to maybe be on a grander scale , are not going to be. This is Grenada after all.
We had hired a car so finding the place was a challenge in itself as at the end of the road from Tivoli there’s no sign to River Antoine , or if there is I missed it.

We arrived at the small car park and wandered around , no-one came out to greet us , so we assumed this was the right place.

We spotted another tourist on what looked like a guided tour , but wefound out later it was the famous AJ Meddy , he invited us to join in the tour which had just started.

We got to taste (just a sip for me as driving) , both the 69% and 75% versions of the Rivers Rum , you can see why some ex-pats swear by it for cleaning anything , this stuff is like Rocket fuel , drink with care! We also tried the very nice Rum punch they do there.

This is worth a visit, and it was totally free.

“Fascinating..Rum or Rocket Fuel?”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2012

Truly a jump back in time where you will either be amazed or appalled or both at the production process of this unique rum distillery.

At first glance you are not sure that the place is even fit for bacteria to breed let alone make a beverage, but the end result after the tour for me was one of admiration of a business that employs many people and produces a fine product....even if the strongest is TOO flammable to be allowed near your flight home!!
