“Beautiful, Well Appointed & A Must Stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2009

Travelled to Samana Jan 25/09 to Feb 1/09. I book the vacation through Bel Air on the internet. I have used them on several occassions with comlete satisfaction.

I have travelled to Dominican on several occassions all of which have been to Punta Cana and it's great beach. This time I tought I would shake it up and found this gem located in Samana. Samana is a lesser known resort area due to the lack of easy access from the air. A traveller had to endure a 4 to 5 hour bus trip from Puerto Plata until they build a new airport in 2007 now the trip takes a more reasonable 30- 40 minutes to Samana.

The resort Gran Bahia Principe Cayacoa is located a mere 5-10 minute walk from town built on a rockey outcrop with a small beach on either side of the resort. There is a shuttle that travels into town every hour that stops at Pueblo Principe, which is a shopping centre/outdoor theater complex owned and operated by the hotel chain. Some of the bigger shows are held there.

First impression of the resort was very well appointed, polished stone everywhere and well kept. The staff at check in were very friendly and helpful. I had requested a king size bed when I booked and found two doubles. After a bit of a run around I used my tour rep to speak on my behalf and I got one of best rooms in the place. The view was outstanding.

The rooms are well done and spacious, both rooms had great views and the maids did great job.

The food was excellent, good variety at the buffet and the ala carte, Seafood, Italian and Gourmet top notch. The staff were more than happy to change any of the meals to suit ones taste.

The bars were great the lobby bar was the best staffed and the bartenders were tops. The swimup bar at times was a little busy for the one bartender. The two beach bars were fine also. The disco bar was also busy at start time just before a show but that is normal at all resorts. Now there was another section of the resort that had a couple of pools and a bar that was not staffed. The people over there were not to happy, it was a nice quiet spot over there a bartender wouild have made it a great spot.

The beach is small but was nice, not for the beach walkers that go to Punta Cana. Now there is another beach over on the island that requires a shuttle $25 per person charge. Just don't go when the cruise ships come in if you don't like allot of people. A word of warning the plastic beach chairs on the island are FREE the other beach chairs with straps on them cost you to use them.

This was one of the nicest resorts I have stayed at. You won't be disappointed!

  • Liked — Beautiful and Well Appointed, Great Staff - Angel at lobby bar is the best
  • Disliked — Small beach but it was outweighed bythe beauty

We went to the Gran Bahia Principe Cayocoa in Samana DR from 26 Jan 09 to 2 Feb 09. Flight on Skyservice was good. Usual airline food. No problems going through airport and bus trip to resort was good. We were checked in on the bus to the resort. Some rooms were not ready when we arrived as it was only 1PM so we headed for the buffet. The food at the buffet was excellent. We tried the Gourmet ala cart restaurant and found it excellent. The service and food at the Italian restaurant (Dolce Vita) sucked. We did not try the seafood one as my daughter does not like fish. The weather was excellent. I understand that it rained the week previous and the week after. We were in the Junior suites near the beach on the 2nd floor (Building 32). Very clean. We slept with the patio door open and did not need the air conditioning on at all. Maid service was Good. Yes there were MANY stairs but it was good excercise after the the Buffet. This is our second trip to the Samana area. We enjoyed it. The only problem we had was with the electronic door keys. The door had to be reprogrammed several times. Even the maid's key would not open it up. We stayed by the lower Jaccuzi pools. Always clean. Went on the Jeep Safari and the National Park (Los Haitais) trips. Both times we were booked in with a larger french speaking group. The guides spoke limited english.
We had a great time and would definately go back again.

My husband and I were Married at the Cayacoa on Jan 30th, 2009. We arrived on Jan 25 and stayed until Feb 1. The trip was fantastic from start to finish. We had a group of 24 people traveling and staying with us and all were very pleased with the hotel. There is a lot of walking but after eating so much, it does your body good!
The food at the buffet was good. I enjoyed the buffet more then the A la Carte restaurants, the seafood one was good. I enjoyed the pool, it was nice, clean and refreshing. The beach was smaller but we thought it was very nice as well.
The wedding coordinator Simona, she was wonderful! We did not need to worry as she took care of everything! The wedding exceeded our expectations. All the staff were so helpful and actually appeared excited to be helping out with the wedding. We could not be more happy with the way our day turned out! We were very sad to leave and cannot wait to return for our anniversary!!!!

Stayed Feb 2-9 2009 At Bahia Principe Cayacoa. Great room 5th floor w/view of town and marina/ocean. Lots of things to see & do. Rained 4 out of 7 days so not at beach as much as we hoped. Staff amazing very helpful. Clean hotel & great food at all restaurants especially Gourmet. 1st time scuba diving w/ Alberto was fantastic. Would love to go back and see whales next time too rough weather 3 meter waves. So many camera op's avail being on a cliff w/islands in view. Many trips avail took taxi for 2 hr drive last day towards Playa Rincon lots of great pics. Not much in the way of nitelife in this area. Very quiet in the evening but great drinks & coffee at the Lobby bar. Would recommend this hotel highly!!!

I guess like any holiday its what you make of it. I don't like to complain and I try to make the best of what a third world country offers me so, I hope to be fair in my opinion.
The very poor town of Samana is close to the hotel ( a bit to close for my taste ).
When looking out from the hotel over the town of Samana, staying at the G.B Cayacoa was like being at a palace. The views are amazing. The hotel lobby, rooms and buffet was a delight. The people were friendly enough. The lay out of the hotel wasn't the greatest but everything was close by the 2 elevators.
If you want to lay low by the beach with the buffet for the day then be prepared to defeat over 200 stairs to the beach. Or if you want to wait a bit you can take a shuttle. The other beach was down a very hot stuffy elevator to a small lake erie like beach. The food was so so yummy, something for everyone, even the picky eater.
If you enjoy a "holiday inn" kinda atmosphere.. ...laying by the pool and eating good food or if you like quaint and culture then this place is good for that but ,If you enjoy the clear blue waters, white sand, and big hotels with lots of open space and things to do, then this isn't the place for you.

Just returned from a one week stay at the bahia principe cayacoa and was very pleased by the quality of the hotel, the food and mostly the beauty of Samana. I have travelled to the Dominican Republic twice before (once at Punta Cana and once at Puerto Plata) but nothing compares to the lush tropical landscape of the Samana peninsula. The hotel itself is built on a cliff overlooking the bay. A glass enclosed elavator provides quick and easy access to the main beach but you can also walk down to the beach. The beach during our stay was quite clean, the water clear, perfect for swimming, snorkeling. The food served at the buffet was excellent (better than most 5 star resorts) and we tried out all three à la carte restaurants and found them all quite good. Shopping in Samana is a bit of a disappointment. The pueblo principe shops offer very little but are probably worth a visit as the hotel provides free shuttle service every hour. The hotel animation team do their best to put on entertaining shows in the evening but the venue (disco) is too small and not very nice. There are a few excursions available and I would certainly recommend a trip to Los Haitises (National Park with caves). Whale watching is a big draw if you are interseted in seeing Humpback whales in a beautiful environment (sure beats the North Atlantic..) Boat trips are available for those who wish to visit Bacardi Island where the Bahia principe Levantado is situated. The beach there is quite nice but can be busy when cruise ships are in (almost every day the week we were there.) So, in summary, a five star hotel situated in what is likely the most beautiful area of the Dominican Republic.

We stayed at this resort from Jan 25 to Feb 1. Well our check in was great right from the bus. It took about 45mins to get to the hotel but once we got there we went right to our rooms. If you are on the 4th or 5th floor you will have great views from your room.We had very few problems. The beach has no snack bar and l didn`t like taking a elevator to the beach and the beach is very small other than that it was okay. The rooms were kept clean and the food was good in the buffet. What made my trip was Victor from the entertainment crew.He was great and very funny. The lobby bar had a waitress that was lovely her name was Allta great woman just loved her. This resort is small but has many stairs to climb. We did no excursions except we did go to the town of Samana it sure makes you glad you live were you do very very poor and dirty.Just remember this is your holiday you wait all year to take relax and enjoy, the warm weather and sun are worth it. If anyone has any question feel free to email me.
Have fun!!!!!
