“beautiful resort but also a word of caution...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2013

Upon our arrival met by a cold drink and told room not quite ready...not a problem, had a look around and a bite to eat in buffet restaurant. After lunch, room ready. Very nice rooms...had one overlooking the bay on top (5th) floor. Friends had a seaview, same floor...awesome views.

After settling in, went to book ala cartes. Told we had only 3 whereas Air Canada Priviledges said 4.No problem it takes sometimes a little too long to eat there. Average around 2 hours. We had a large group (12) and trying to get everyone together sometimes impossible. One dinner our family only. Prior to going on our trip, I asked in advance to have a reservation for the New Years Eve Gala dinner set up for the 12 of us. Was told there would be one for us, no problem. When we went to confirm this, it seemed all new to them. They gave us a slip for our party anyways. Upon arrival for the 8:30 seating, told it was too many of us for one table and that they didn't do more than 10 at a table. Funny thing was, there was a table for 14 right next to us. Not too happy about squeezing into a table of 4 with a round table of 8, Daddys and Raphael made best the situation and offered us a complimentary bottle of wine. They explained to us, there was no record of reservation. Point here, if told one thing...get in in writing and with a name. Even then, no guarantee. Meal itself okay, nothing special.

The food in the buffet in general is tasty but often repetitive. The ala cartes better quality but often not enough quantity. I felt the gourmet was the best of the bunch with the seafood next and then the italian. Another word of caution...men must have CLOSED TOE shoes for dinner for the ala cartes. But after viewing one male patron with sandals on and confirming this after talking to them outside the restaurant, both the restaurant manager and hostess denied that they were in there. They refused our friend entry earlier. Seems a little fishy...who you know maybe? The food and beverage manager Raphael was called and situation was explained. He apologized and made sure we were looked after the next night in the italian restaurant.

The hotel offered many things to do for both children and adults. Day trips were numerous and both Juan and Carlitos explained everything. We tried SCUBA in the pool...very good. A group of people went to see the sea lions on "Bacardi Island" aka Cayo Laventado. More went deep sea fishing and others went ziplining with "Walk the Plank" zip line tours done through Air Canada. The animation staff were wonderful and we had a lot of fun at some of the shows. The wait staff and bartenders were excellent all the time. A little tip here and there is very appreciated. My favourite was Evelyn at the beach bar. Nice bloody marys almost tasted little caesars. If looking for clamato juice, it can found in gift shop outside front lobby but very expensive. Town is a short shuttle away and wine and other necessities can be purchased there a lot cheaper than at hotel. You can bring your own wine to the ala cartes...do it as the house wine is a little rough.

Trip from airport quick and I mean really quick...fast drivers. Joel from Air Canada met us at airport and very helpful here and at the hotel. Doesn't deserve the negative reviews previously posted.

All in all a good trip with a good bunch of friends and family. Yes it is a little harder with a group of 12 but they try to fix their mistakes. Just get their names when promised something. Beautiful hotel, nice location, average food and most of the time great service. A lot of steps, especially if elevator is broken to get to beach...happened one day.

Last note of caution for the Canadians coming home from Samana airport. The manager at the duty free shop will try to sell you more alcohol than allowed by customs. Only 1.14 litres a person is allowed. He tells everyone that two bottles...any size allowed. I wish, lol.

Room Tip: Higher floors, less noise I feel. But rooms overlooking bay will pick up town noise and disco noise...

Hotel is on a cliff, surrounded by small lush mountains, lovely walkways and gardens with private gazebos. Our room was 441 facing the harbour and the town. Very pretty, especially at night. Villas are further down. Shuttles were always available to take you down, or up. An elevator takes you down to the beach, or you can walk down on the north side. Lovely, warm staff at the reception, main bar, beach bar and the restaurants, . Made some special friends at the buffet. Leonardo, Claudio, Emperatriz, Yistel, Esterlin, Carlos, Julio, David, Dady's and three greeters, Wanda Mirelba an Emmi etc. Can't remember all the names! Had very nice conversations with the Privilege Club group. Juan Vargas, Joselin Gomez, Martin and Antonio. All three restaurants were quite good but I preferred eating at the buffet. (Dominican food).Very clean, quiet and relaxing environment. Not a party place

Room Tip: Al rooms have good views . Not sure about some on the first floor. First floor hotels in the Caribbe...

Our trip was fantastic from start to finish,When we arrived I asked if we could have a room on the main floor due to my wife's condition as she has a hard time going up and down stairs and at the check in they said no problem. Our room was beautiful our balcony was overlooking the bay great view. The staff was very friendly anything you needed all you had to do just ask.The fridge in our room was restocked every day,the food was the best we ever had in the DR.I would recomend this hotel to anybody.Looking forward to go back someday. The beach is small but OK.

Room Tip: Any room with 200 numbers ocean view

We arrived on saturday from a 2 week vacation with our family of 22...of all ages and every single one of us had a fantastic time, the service was excellent!! With just a single call they were there to help us and make sure we were happy.. the place was clean and well maintained.
Considering we were such a big group they managed to always keep us content with all of us together and that was all because of Dadys, Manuel, Claudio and tinker bell (wanda) mariabel and David..At the bar Manuel made the best mojitos and the service from them all was excellent thank you Dario and manuel..
The animation team outdid themselves they work to make the guests happy and comfortable, our for girls of ages 6 to 9 loved being there and playing with them.. thank you Carolin, Jairo,Fernando,Juan,Yerson,Felix, and Spaghetti...when you think one week is too short, 2 weeks was short for us =( Paradise will soon await us
Samana has many things to do and i advise you do them limon waterfall, playa rincon.

We went for a week for Christmas as a family with our sons, 21 and 24.
We had a very good holiday and met some nice people. Lots of Canadians, several families, which was nice, lots of ages there , few young children. There was something for all of us.
The weather was mixed, but didn't stop us doing anything. I loved the beach, quite small. The lift down was spectacular, the walk across the bridges to the islands was good, (someone else's review called it the bridge to nowhere! ). A nice walk and an adventure on the island !! A good view of the 'Bacardi ' Island from there.
My husband liked the pool area for sunbathing, good sunbeds We all loved the swim up bar and beach bar, really lovely barstaff. My sons are best friends with the bar and poolstaff now ! They went into town after the disco bar closed with friends and staff, everyone is so friendly. They went swimming at all hours of the night, apparently, after a night out. I slept then !
The food was OK, not great. A nice choice, but repetitive. We found the all inclusive wine was very disappointing. We paid extra for decent wine. Beer and cuba libres and other cocktails are all good !!
There are many steps , so do not go if you're not fit !! Although the hotel will take you around in the buggies. I really liked the Italian a la carte. The view from the pool bar/restaurant was just lovely.
Thompsons don't fly to Samana airport, so the three and a half hour transfer after the 9 hour flight is a bit much !! It seems only the British do that transfer.
We didn't really leave the hotel. It is on it's own. A relaxing holiday, sunbathing, swimming, reading...with cocktail in hand, and eating. We had a junior suite. A very nice room, huge bed, very good indeed, nice amount of space. The standard rooms had small bathrooms. We had a side sea view, which was nice. Our room (420) was very quiet too...no noise from the bars or the town. I bet the full sea view room would be spectacular. Good free wifi in reception.
I really enjoyed it.

Room Tip: Junior suites are a really good size.

This was our 9th trip to the Dominican and 6th trip to a Bahia property. We've been to Bahia San Juan (Puerto Plata) once and Bahia Punta Cana five times and this time was Cayacoa.

Travelled for the first time to a Bahia with 2 of our kids (boys ages 13 &15) ... we knew going in about the "stairs" but weren't really quite prepared I don't think. Boys were fine ... hubby & I huffed and puffed a lot more then used to.

Rooms were GREAT (Golden Club rooms 3112 & 3113) ... maid service AWESOME. Only issue was that my sons' keys (Room 3112) had to be "recoded" 3 times and only after the 3rd time did they send someone to replace the batteries on the door itself. After a day in the hot sun, the last thing you want is to hike up to your room and discover it doesn't open. Thank goodness we were able to get into my husband & my room and call for the trolley to bring us to the front desk.

Golden pool GREAT for adults .. in fact should be adults only. SUPER quiet and the La Casita (beach bar/lunch rest) is right there and GREAT as are bathrooms.

Main pool "fun" and music playing however bathrooms are quite a walk away which I found very odd. And to add to that, if you want a snack or a light lunch you got to go all the way back into the main hotel and down to the "buffet" ... main pool should have a snack bar like La Casita.

Food was typical for the DR (very good but after 7 days we all said "no more chicken or fish for a month" ... breakfast was everyone's favourite meal and the gentleman who works the omelet bar was GREAT ... our favourite employee was hands down "Dady" at the buffet. I believe he's either a Manager or Asst. Mgr and he was simply AWESOME and really did wonders to making my boys' (who are quite shy/quiet) feel welcome and special. He's a gem and a keeper!

Only real issue I had was that unlike the Bahia in Punta Cana ... the shuttles only run when you call them. In Punta Cana they run all day in a continuous loop so if you miss one, the next one is only 3 min. away. Was quite the pain to call for a trolley to take us to main hotel for dinner and then wait outside only to discover 6 other people standing there and the trolley's only hold 9 people so we had to wait 10 min. for another one.

Would I go back ... possibly ... LOVED Samana ... but think next time it will be only hubby & I and we'll splurge and do BP Cayo Levantado which I understand is now adults only.
