“Fantastic workers and lovely resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2012

Me and my friend spent a week in Cayacoa and it was brilliant. Although our reservations were screwed up during our arrival on the 17th the receptionist were able to solve the issue in a quick manner and offered us a nice ocean view. The Service and the people working at the resort were friendly and extremely lively. I would have to give a shout out to rosemary who is the host of the lunch and dinner buffet.. she is so cute and extremely friendly. We were able to learn bits of spanish through her.. If you head to cayacoa I suggest you meet her as well as Adriana, Fernando and Lenny. Their all excellent dancers/entertainers. They will make your stay extra rewarding. For the single ladies going to the resort Fernando and Lenny are smooth talkers and they will make your stay enjoyable. Plus their pretty .. :) Absolutely loved the late night dances and live music in the lobby. The food I would have to say was a bit on the plain side. Another disappointment I would have to say would have been the disco at night. We heard such great reviews about the live disco at cayacoa so we decided to check it out on a friday night and it was a complete disappointment.. Absolutely no one was there besides the bar tender and the dj. The music wasn't as great as expected however the grease show we saw at disco was amazing .. Overall I would say the resort was wasn't what I expected.. It was amazing and fantastic .. I would definitely recommend this resort and hope to return soon :)

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2012

We flew to DR on the 23rd May 2012 with First Choice. We upgraded our flight and could not fault this one bit. Check-in was a dream at Gatwick, a good start to our wonderful holiday.

Flight was just over 8 hours and the cabin crew look after us very well. Nothing was too much trouble and the food was good. Once we arrived at DR it was very very hot and humid, airport still undergoing some renovations, so no A/con in places, but okay. Do be aware that porters will try and take your luggage to the bus and charge $20 for the privilege, don't be fooled, they do not work for First Choice or any other associated travel company.

Once on the air conditioned bus, it is a long long 3.5 hour transfer to the hotel. The bus does stop around half way so you can go to the loo / smoke / drink etc... The drinks are not free, but it is a welcome break. After this, you just cannot wait to get there as the coaches are not executive!!

On arrival at the hotel we were greeted by a welcome cocktail and check-in was very smooth and painless. Our luggage was loaded on the buggy to take us to our room (Golden Club Suite). Once in our room we could really appreciate the wonderful view of the hotel and bay.

Room was very very spacious, clean, large bed but have to admit there was a slight musty smell, but this disappeared once we had the patio doors opened and didn't return. Spa bath was very noisy and small! Apart from this, we didn't have any complaints about the room.

The weather whilst we were in the DR was very very hot, I would advise to take a higher sun factor (we took 30 and needed 40 for the first few days). There are lots and lots of steps, but we knew this by reading previous trip advisor reviews before we booked. We are not fit people by any means and were a little worried! However, after a few days you get used to them and if anything we lost a bit of weight before returning to the UK (who needs a Gym membership!) We only walked during the day and took the buggy at night which ran at very regular intervals from just outside our hotel room to the main hotel, plus if you like heels like I do you can still pack them in your case ladies!

First day, we went to the small beach area in front of the Golden Club Suites (just to get our bearings), sun loungers here and at the smaller pool weren't great, but okay. I can see what people mean about trash in the water, this is a sad problem, but the hotel staff are doing everything they can to clean this all day. Snack bar was by the Jacuzzi Pools and very good, although my husband got told to put on a t-shirt before we could eat here, which meant we had to go back to our room to get one before we could have lunch. We did so, and he continued to wear a t-shirt at lunch for the rest of our holiday, however the rude woman who told him to do this, allowed other dinners to come in without a t-shirt so not sure what the policy really was :-( Apart from this, service was a little slow, but food good.

The main resturant was excellent, very good service, very good food choice, never had any upset stomach from visiting here and could get our same table every night. We have travelled extensively and felt that this all inclusive buffett was of a very high standard. The A la carte resturants were a little different! We would NOT recommend the Dolce Vita italian as it was c**p, no ambiance, no service, was given a welcome cocktail which wasn't even an inch in the bottom of the glass WTF... Food was basic and ended up feeling ill after visiting here and lasted until the end of the holiday. Fish resturant was the best and the Gormet was an iffy second place.

Drinks at the hotel were okay, steer clear of the wine and beer and just go with the cocktails. Coco Loco was lovely as was Cuba Libra. Drinks staff wonderful, barmen a little grumpy but they do seem to do very long hours.

Pools/beach: Main pool is very noisy and loud, okay if thats what your in to. However notice lots of people drinking in the pool bar for a long time without getting out for a pee..... you work it out!!! We spent most of our time at a little pool to the right of the Golden Club Suites that nobody went to. Okay no pool bar, but you can take drinks from your mini bar there and have it all to yourself, which we did for about 2 weeks, just lovely. Visited the main beach once, just okay, that's all I can say.

Tipping / Money Exchange / Hotel Shop: Tipping is not looked for, but you do tend to get better service. We tipped as much as we could, especially the buggy drivers and got looked after very well. It also helps if you can speak a bit of Spanish, which we can, so helped us. It is difficult to change money at the hotel. Main reception is the only place we found where we could exchange money (mainly for tipping reasons), but it was very hit and miss. Hotel Shop: We went here as Reception was closed and wanted to buy something to get some change for tipping, however it seems that this shop never has any change.. After the woman has sucked her teeth for the fifth time, you end up buying more to help her out and then come out with no change for tipping!!! We were not the only people this happened to!! After a third visit she was much more helpful, so redeemed herself in the end. Also, there is an ATM here, just go down to the parade with the shops on your left hand side, it is on the right hand side tucked in a corner (this is still on the hotel site). I didn't use it, but I saw it was there. Also, if you go into the town you will be hassled a great deal, so unfortunatley better to stay on the hotel grounds.

VIP Golden Club Salesman: You will probably have heard about this from previous reviews. Don't worry, they are only doing their job. Basically, they tell you to meet them as they have a present from the hotel to give to you. You don't officially arrange to meet them, but they find you.... In our experience it is better to go and see them and get their free gifts (they are really funny..) then you have to make an appointment to go and have a meeting about joining their VIP Privilege Club. In short this is an RCI timeshare, don't be fooled! However, we went to the meeting, said quite categorically after 20 minutes we weren't interested and ended up with a bag full of goodies and two t-shirts with our picture on them, we were laughing so much, I think they thought we were nuts.... We heard about people who had been on a 2 hour sales pitch, were were in and out in 20 minutes with presents for home and a bottle of rum, beat that.........

Did the Barcardi Island tour and the Playa Ricon tours. Out of the two, do Play Ricon it is amazing. Spent by 37th birthday on a beach to rival the Maldives. Lots of memories and lots of laughs, enjoy it, when are you going to do it again??

All in all, we would't return, but that is just us we don't return to the same hotel. We would recomend DR as a first time caribbean holiday, but it was really just too big for us. Roll on Jamaica 2013. Buenos noshes amigos :-)

EXTREMELY TERRIBLE SERVICE! Cleaning service entered the room twice...without knocking. The first time, we had arrived the night before and were extremely tired; they entered the room at 8:30 am. We had put the "DO NOT DISTURB", wind blew it away. Too early anyway to clean a room, they should check when their customers arrive-we had been up for nearly 24hrs! We thought our KEY-CARD did not work, It would flash RED, but it was not our KEY it was the mechanism. They said WE WILL CHANGE THE BATTERY, AND THEY DID NOT, AND WE HAD TO WAIT 3 HOURS TO GET TO IT WORK TO EVEN ENTER OUR ROOM. We had it!! A meeting was scheduled with general manager because of these and other issues(OH, I AM NOT DONE SO MANY MORE), and I was given several excuses: HE IS NOT IN, HE JUST LEFT, HE IS BUSY. I told customer relations I would wait, and I took FIVE TIMES to finally reach him. We explained issues @ hand, and all he seemed to be concerned was the TV that was not working in our room. He called MAINTENANCE, and they arrived the next day. The TV had to be "TURNED ON" using the channel button?????? WHAT?, then the control was not for this TV it was for another one. He explains " YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL BECAUSE THE VOLUME IS SET TO HIGH AUTOMATICALLY AND YOU CAN NOT FIX IT. We found this out because shortly before he arrived, our next door neighbor came knocking our door!!! WALLS ARE ALSO PAPER THIN. We could hear our neighbor sneezing, and hear their conversations. BEACH VERY VERY DIRTY. Plastic bottles everywhere in water, along with Styrofoam cups, and even glass. BEACH open to everyone. Bridge to "NOWHERE" dangerous, be careful...locals stated people have been robbed. Hotel does not inform you of this! ALSO, POWER OUTAGE OUT 3 TIMES.

Room Tip: if you still want to choose this hotel, choose a room inside the building not the outside because it...

Dear TripAdvisor member:
we appreciate the time you have dedicated for sharing your experience at Gran Bahia Principe Cayacoa by this review on Tripadvisor. Your opinions are very important, allowing us learn more about the requirements and needs of our guests.
We understand perfectly your discomfort in relation to the schedule of the maids and the problems with the TV and the door of the room and we sincerely regret that we could not achieve your expectations and that you've taken the impression of our hotel and service.
We want to explain that all beaches in Dominican Republic are public, in our case, the Hotel is responsible for cleaning and maintenance of the area. Our beach is not the typical beach of turquoise waters and white sands, because of our location within a bay our sand is darker.
We again appreciate the time you took to share your dissatisfaction and will allow us improve day by day and exceed the expectations of our customers.
Expecting to have the opportunity to welcome back one of our hotels in the Caribbean, Spain, Mexico and Jamaica to be able to offer a more enjoyable experience

We stayed a week from June 9th till June 16th. All I can say, is best hotel I have ever been. Room was amazing, view on ocean, with balcony, very clean. The whole site was spotless!. Buffet was very good , with a lot of variety, each day. Small beach, however for couples who need peace and quiet...this is the place. Not enough chairs at the pool though. Animation team, were great, not to pushy but very friendly.

Cindry and Adriana were the sweetest girls ever,we felt at home!

Would go back anytime.

Room Tip: Would recommend with a vue on ocean, on the 4th floor
