“Worth the visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2013

The clean look permeates everything. Quiet, surrounded by nature, fantastic views from every room, good food, good service...can't ask for more if you want to explore Samana bay, Rincon beach, watch whales from your room (Feb/March), or Las Terrenas but you ned a car or else hunker down and enjoy the amenities and relaxed atmosphere. If you try it once, you may want to come back.

The views from the balconies are well worth the stay alone! Very clean, and the staff are extremely helpful and prompt. Very modern, and the beds are very comfortable. We had an awesome view of the cruise ship in the bay as well as we were able to see the whales from the balcony!

Room Tip: Ask for rooms close to the reception as the hills are steep if walking to the pool or beach or to th...

Been here for 4 nights, and I must say this place is outstanding.
It takes 2 1/2 hour to get from Santo Domingo to Samana by bus - Caribe Tours has good buses and a fine schedule and it is cheap (610 pesos for 2 persons). From Samana it is easy to get here by local Taxa (price is about 300/400 Pesos).
We had an apartment in block VI no. 301, and what a view!
In the apartment there is dishwasher, washing machine and Dryer.
The wi-fi only functions at the reception and in the restaurant and it is free of charge.
We had all our meals at the restaurant, and that was ok though the service was a little slow. The lunch and dinner menus are often breaded or with fat sauce - seems that every thing is easy prepared - but well tasting. The house wine was good. We did not choose the all inclusive and were glad because it was cheaper for us to pay each meal separately.
The view from the restaurant is amazing too.
There are 2 nice beaches to go to inside the hotel area, but access is by steep road and some steps.
The west beach are with sun beds but both beaches are wonderful.
We went to Samana one day and hired a local Taxa for 300/400 pesos and we had a good trip and good lunch there.
We definitely can recommend this place.

We rented a 1 BR condo from the owner, very pleased with the rate. Incredible view of Samana Bay. Two private beaches for this community of about 100 units. Gorgeous beaches but a very steep paved walk up and down! Pools are lovely, food is great, good attentive service. Prices ok in restaurant but 28 percent service charge adds up. Not too full, was very peaceful, with other guests both Dominican and international. One US ex-pat said he prefers this to the all-inclusive resorts. Pretty isolated, local Dominican communities nearby, poor, few things to buy and no regular markets. A $20 taxi ride one way to Samana town, which is still pretty basic. We didn't have a car, so didn't get out much but we were very happy here. Did a fantastic tour with Terry 's Tours to national park and Cayo Levantado.

Internet in bar / restaurant makes it kind of a community center. Made some good friends. Feel very secure here, gated community, security guys always on beach. Great waves, which as a bodysurfer I love.

I cannot say enough good things about this property. From the accomodations, to the staff, to the food, to the great facilties (pools, beaches, gym, spa). I tried them all and will absolutely be back.

Reading other reviews, let me clarify some of the negatives (that had me concerned before arriving). The big one is the "hill". Yup, it is a very steep climb - took me all week to be able to walk to the top without being left breathless, and I work out. But that is the price you pay to be in a secluded cove with two (!) private beaches. If mobility is an issue, please let the staff know when you book that you prefer an upper apartment.

The apartments are very comfortable, especially the beds. I agree that there are some minor issues with the quality of the furniture, but the staff is aware of this and are happy to fix/replace items when they know about them. Having a full kitchen to cook in and a washer/dryer is a HUGE plus in my books. Took full advantage of both. There is a small store that is in the pool/restaurant area that sells pretty much everything you need (including laudry soap). If you need dish soap, ask the maid and she will be happy to provide some. For bigger food purchases there is a large supermarket in Santa Barbara that can provide pretty much everything. Don't forget a cigar clip if you want to enjoy some local product.

The staff was wonderful and managed two difficult and stressful situations for me with grace and function. For that I am sincerely grateful. Like anywhere in the Dominican, you should learn some basic Spanish or carry a translation/dictionary app to communicate what you need. Work with them, and trust me, they will work with you.

The gym is a bit run down, but functional if a workout is part of your daily schedule. Free weights, two stationary bikes, a treadmill, and a universal machine are available, They are not up the standard of a North American fitness gym, but this is a rarity in the Dominican and I was easily able to adapt my workout with what was available.

The restaurant produced consistently good food and has a reasonable wine selection at every price point. Being able to dine al fresco while watching the sun go down each evening was a highlight and something I wll long remember. Thanks to Humberto, Miguel and Jose for the attentive and professional service.

Finally, do take the opportunity to use the spa. They offer basic treatments and mostly massage. The three massages I had with Freddy were incredible. He correctly identified existing stress and previous injuries on the first visit and adapted his techniques to help work out these areas. I was amazed. This man is a complete professional and a bargain for the prices for his excellent service. Cannot recommend this enough.

Of note, while this is a quiet time for the hotel, it was evident that the staff was working very hard to get everything ready for the busy season that starts with Christmas. Hot tubs were being tested and repaired, new paint everywhere, and inventories taken of all the units. This is a management team that cares about your time here and the impression they leave. Let them know that you appreciate it.

As a local told me "I dream of the day I can hold my wedding at Vista Mare". I hope for him that day comes soon and in the meantime, I will dream until my next trip back to this magic spot in Samana.

Room Tip: If you want to use the beaches, choose rooms on the lower levels. You will have to do the climb to r...

Located on a cliff in between two stunning coves Vista Mare is a good value option when visiting Samana' peninsula. Very close to amazing beaches the condos are brand new and with amazing views. The restaurant is ok , the pool is great , the water of the ocean has strong currents in this location , so be aware. The other problem is that the property is on a ripid cliff , so you need a car go around the resort.
