“Solid Resort Destination”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2013

We booked our 3wk stay through Jetblue. They offer a direct and easy flight from JFK two days a week to Samana airport (AZS) -which is clean and efficient. We arranged private transfers with toursamanawithterry.com. He was reasonable, waiting for us, and responded quickly to our emails. The ride to ferry was easy with complimentary beer/water/soda available in a cooler. By the time we finished our beer we had arrived at the ferry dock where we checked-in and were given our room key/information.The hotel owned Ferry is scheduled at different times through-out the day and also slightly awkward without knowing that this is the same ferry all staff take to arrive at the island for work. While all staff were very nice to clear a path for us to board first no one really said anything to us so we just kind of followed the pointing and got the hint. The return ferry was a different experience.. knowing protocol, a manager sending us off and having gotten to know some friendly faces.

Resort is beautiful and grand however there is some noticeable wear/aging. Wonderful lush setting with three beaches for all guests to use. Very easy to walk around however there are golf carts that will pick you up.
Public beach: largest, sea lion show, nightly hotel entertainment, lots of beach chairs(but very run down), small huts with local vendors, a walk from main hotel.
Calm beach: very small, crowded, calmest water as it is a protected little cove, close to bar and main pool.
Windy beach: big waves, sort of on a sloping hill.
Pools: 1 quiet, 1 main near beach, 1 jacuzzi, all have lots of shade available, near bars and bathrooms, lounge chairs close together, showing wear with missing and grout stained tiles.

We thought the main buffet and the Don Pablo were amazing. Lots of effort put into presentation endless options and impressive that the menu was constantly changing. However a low spot is the beach/pool lunch buffet. NOT GOOD. Another frustration is you are not able to eat or order food by pool or beaches. We did not like that while the drink service by pool/beach was good, drinks are served in small clear disposable plastic cups.

One major issue we had was with one of the entertainment staff having unprofessional behavior that made us uncomfortable. One day he pulled my husband aside and asked him if he would leave him his sneakers. My husband explained he didn't bring any and was then asked if he would buy him a pair...

While overall we had a wonderful time, there are a few issues that make this resort not what we were looking for when thinking of a 5* -so probably won't return. However would recommend as the location and food were amazing and ultimately we did achieve what we were looking for.

Room Tip: Room in main hotel are exposed to nightly entertainment. Can be loud..

This hotel and location are very hard to beat if your looking for a holiday where you just want to relax and enjoy swimming, reading, food and accommodation of a superb standard. The hotel is
located on its own island reached by boat from the mainland. We stayed in a luxurious Junior Suite that overlooked the jetty and it was furnished to a very high standard. The complex has a main pool area with plenty of sunbeds and bar, a great area to swim, relax, sunbathe and read.
We liked the area so much we spent most of the holiday there.
The complex also has a fantastic beach and close by another pool complex that was busier during the day. The hotel has a really brilliant team that provide evening entertainment shows most evenings. There is a public beach on the island that becomes the hotels at 9.45pm and some entertainment can be enjoyed in the evening.
The selection of food in the main buffet restaurant was fantastic for all meals in the day and the waiting staff were really friendly and helpful. There are three other 'formal' restaurants to use too but require booking. We enjoyed the atmosphere and selection more in the buffet area that we ate there most days.
We enjoyed a free boat trip around the island on a Thursday and there were other trips available to the mainland.
The weather in late October was very good.....hot and sunny most days with rain/thunderstorms in the evenings.
We will return and thank you to all the staff we had the pleasure to deal with. We enjoyed making new friends and a 'hi' to Roy & Sarah !!!

Room Tip: The Junior Suites are fantastic....ask for a room overlooking the sea if available.

Well what more can i say other then please dont be put off by the minor negative reviews. I have stayed all over the world and this is by my best holiday to date and would definitely return and recommend, i already have two friends booking by my recommendation!
Its location is beautiful and the grounds are very well kept all the time,
The staff, maids, waiters, gardeners are all so polite and helpful and cannot do enough to help you!
we had booked a junior suite and then on arrival was overjoyed to see we had been upgraded to a huge gorgeous room in villa 14 with a partial sea/main land view. but every room is nice, clean and great size as we met two lovely couples out there and viewed each others room and all was lovely except one did looks over staff area which was a shame.
The food was absolutely amazing!!! the quality and selection was secong to none and the service was brilliant! Maria in the main buffet is so happy and sweet was so lovely seeing her happy face everyday!
The entertainment team are all so lovely and made our holiday complete specially the twice a day volleyball games for my partner! The evening shows were super!!! the dancers are professionals and put on some great displays! there was the odd cheesy magician but it was funny. I want to say a massive thank you to all for putting in so much effort for Halloween it was amazing and the Halloween show was fantastic, was the best night of the holiday!!!
We done the quad trip which was great muddy fun and would recommend it, we done the horse riding to the waterfalls which was out of this world!! horses were all in quite good condition and the waterfalls themselves were beautiful and so refreshing to swim in and this trip is soooo cheap!!!!
BUT THERE IS ONE BIG GRIP THAT MUST BE SORTED IS THE THOMSON REP AT THIS HOTEL CALLED MIGUEL!, HE IS RUDE, ABNOXIOUS AND MISS INFORMING PEOPLE ABOUT THE TRIP OCEAN WORLD! I STRONG WANT TO WARN EVERYBODY NOT TO TAKE THIS TRIP, HE PUSHES IT BECAUSE HE GETS A LOT OF COMMISSION FROM IT BUT THIS TRIP RUINED MY HOLIDAY BECAUSE MADE ME SO UPSET AND ANGRY! he didnt tell us the transfer time for this trip and when we paid and got handed our ticket noticed it said 5.15 meet the boat i was like what?!?! he then said its a 3hour transfer which we were very unhappy about but there was nothing we could do now :( when we got on the coach it was OVER 4 HOURS EACH WAY!! The buffet breakfast on route was disgusting and fishy and the food and the park was stale and COLD! we paid £224 dollars for both of us which is so wrong and money grabbing as the park is tiny and you can walk round it in 30minutes, the so cold snorkeling is a tiny see-through tank then there is some parrots to walk through and the so called fish farm is two windows of fish, its all very commercial they lift the sharks right out the water, stand all over the dolphins including on their noses!! the poor sea lions enclosures were so small is was horrible to see and i would highly warn everybody to stay away as there is far nicer happier places to swim with dolphins in the world! also i was very ANGRY to find out that the rep in the GBP Cayo coco on the main land had actually told their clients to stay away and to top this horrendous 14hour day off we then had to wait 45minutes for the ferry to take us back to the island upset us very much as we were very very tired and stressed from such a bad day! i even tried ringing mageul at the main land to say about the 45min wait for ferry and he was extremely rude and unhelpful to us! and when we spoke to him about it face to face he was still very rude and unhelpful and wouldnt admit to anything, i then witnessed them trying to sell the same trip to a poor young couple and sat there and told them it was 3HOURS away when its infact over 4hours each way away, this needs to be sorted and also the other thing is the ferrys back to the island we shouldnt of had to wait 45minutes after a long day trip as we missed out italian booking for as friends birthday!
But other then Maguel the terrible thomson rep and the ocean view trip, this holiday was one in a lifetime and is truely 5* the minibar was restocked everyday, the rooms spotless, the food amazing, the pools fantastic, yes the bottom pool gets dirty but there are trees all around and its right on the beach but you always see them cleaning it through out the day!
Many thanks to all for an amazing relaxing holiday!!!
PLUS thanks for making my partners birthday and our anniversary special!!! big shout out to william, pedro and adrina in the animation team who were fantastic and walkie on the bar!!!

Room Tip: villa 14 is very nice and quite close to everything!

I'll try and keep this short and factual. TRAVEL - flight and transfer both standard and smooth. Flight time was approx 8 hours, then 40mins on the coach, and 10mins on the boat which takes you this beautiful place. We stayed at Villa 2.. perfect location, huge bedroom and bathroom, always kept very clean. Our luggage arrived late, which meant we had to go for dinner in the same clothes. A bottle of Cava was sent to the room the following day as an apology. The mini bar was not fully stocked on arival, and was again the second day but a visit to reception sorted this. The hairdryer in the room was not working either, so this was reported and fixed, but blew up a few days later while my girlfriend was drying her hair. RESTAURANTS - Food still all of great standard in the buffet, all fresh and warm and plenty of choice. Don Pablo was also still great. DRINKS - Most of decent standard, HOWEVER there were clearly less branded drinks compared to previous years. SERVICE - service was generally good, but at lunch times it could be quite slow in the buffet. Staff were all friendly and hard working, with special thanks to Walky in the Lobby bar and Josef Rodriguez in the Buffet. BEACHES - Public beach is beautiful, cant beat a morning walk here. The private beaches werent as clean as last year. POOLS- The "quiet pool" was an absolute nightmare. generallly the rule is one towel per person, but one lady thought it was acceptable to take THREE each for herself and husband, and THREE for each of the other FOUR sunbeds she was "reserving" every morning. This definitely needs to be addressed. ENTERTAINMENT - it is was it is, a bit of light entertainment to break up the night. There was a clear problem with air conditioning in the buffet and Lobby bar, which made having a drink after dinner quite uncomfortable. The management were aware of this issue but it didnt get resolved. There was ongoing building work (new Villas i think), so noise was expected, however i do feel the resort will lose its exclusivity if it gets busier. On a brighter note, the Weather was pretty great the whole time, rain only at night, 29-30 degrees and blue sky during day time. We only ever saw the Thomson Rep Miguel at breakfast and lunch time while he was scoffing in the buffet, but never outside of these times. His phone number is at the desk if thats any good to you. We'll probably not return, however you do get good value for money here.

Just got back from a week here and boy did we have fun! We stayed in the main hotel in the least expensive room and were not disappointed. The room was huge with a decent view of Samana from the large private balcony and large Jacuzzi tub. The wife and I found it to be well appointed, romantic, and spotlessly cleaned every day of our stay. I can't say enough about the housekeepers or the room in general.

We arrived on Friday just in time to grab dinner at the very nice buffet while an acrobat show entertained us. The buffet had some hits and misses. Being from New England I have yet to acquire a taste for Rock Lobster, and many dishes were over cooked. I found that recipes from local and Spanish decent tended to be better than those emulating European and American styles. I really wish there was more focus on the local food. The buffet changed daily and we always found something we liked. Everything we had from the cured ham bar was better than any I have had before, and the plum ice cream is not to be missed.

Each night there was live entertainment from the same dance troupe. Again hit and miss. Some acts were truly awe inspiring and others were tongue in cheek and a bit less than professional quality. All in all a fun way to spend each night while drinking under the stars.

There was certainly plenty to drink. As other have said each bar was quite limited in selection but of what they had there was plenty and they were not afraid to dish it out. Remember to bring your own aspirin and Pepto, a 4oz bottle of the pink stuff cost me $20 US and Tylenol was $1 for two tablets.

On day two we finally made it down to the beach and were not disappointed. The views were amazing, the water crystal clear, and the service on the beach was very attentive. Carlos worked the whole beach and kept our group of 17 properly lubricated for the entire trip. Seriously this guy was great. Make sure to tip him well. Yes, all inclusive does not include tips. These people can do very well from a dollar or two here and there. Money well spent.

We were greeted by Carlito from the Scuba/snorkeling company on the island early in the trip. We were able to arrange a snorkeling trip to a sunken wreck for our entire group. They fed us rum as we toured the coast and learned a bit of the local history which was rich in Columbus facts. We dove first on a wreck in the center of the bay that was loaded with fish of color I had never seen before. We then moved to a reef off a small island north of the resort. All in all a very fun trip. I would have like a bit more time in the water though, but isn't that always the way. Carlito and his group were really great and well worth the $80 per person. I'd skip the included rock lobster dinner though. I wish I had just grabbed lunch by the pool.

My only real gripe of the trip and the only reason I'm holding back the fifth star was the food program in the a la carte restaurants and room service.

Let's start with the restaurants. In order to dine a la carte you need to make a reservation. I recommend making reservations when you first get there as we were denied twice during the trip when we tried to make for reservations for the evening several hours before. Which was a surprise, since the two times we ate in the restaurant it was pretty much empty. There has to be a better way. Service in both Don Pablo and Mediteranio were scattered and slow. Some dishes were very good while others were severely lacking. My sirloin(?) at Mediteranio was among the worst I have ever had. Extremely salty and over cooked. Other dishes in each restaurant made up for this but not enough to even consider these a two star restaurant, never mind five star as advertised.

Next and by far the worst thing about the hotel was room service. The menu was very lacking and based around a basic american child's menu. The cheeseburger was in fact the worst I've ever had. A two ounce patty cooked till it resembled a disk of charcoal, topped with red and green cabbage, a mountain of raw onion, and no cheese to be found anywhere. Even still this was preferable to the mess of a Cesar salad (dressing tasted like whale semen), or the inedible "club sandwich" (3 pieces of wheat bread, with onion, cabbage, cheese, and olive loaf. Yes OLIVE LOAF! No bacon in sight). Fries were OK. Also no alcohol to the room which we found odd on a day we decided to have a romantic morning in bed. The room servers themselves were great. Very attentive, professional, and friendly. I am not surprised at this as we found the rest of the staff to be of the same demeanor.

In all I think this hotel could use a major revamp in its cuisine ,especially in room service whose chef should not be allowed to cook professionally any more.

Everything else though was just perfect. we had an amazing time in a beautiful place. I will be back for sure. This time though I'll pack my own late night food.

*It's important to note that even though I'm giving them 2 stars for food and 3 for beverage selection Trip Advisor is not posting it to the review.

Cayo Levatado is spectacular!! My girlfriend and I went down to Levantado with such high expectations of what is was going to be like. This little island could not have been able to reach and maintain those expectations correct? Wrong - it exceeded our expectations on all counts.
The views and the beaches and the water, not to mention the rooms and the restaurants! To those who write about the poor quality of this resort, I must question where they have been before. They must have never been to the Carribean before. I've been at a many places that have steak available at their Al a Cartes and even some with steak available at their buffets, but who has lobster available at both, or black and red caviar!!! This is a full level above most other places. Add the fact that your on an remote island 1 km x 500m surrounded by the white sugar sand beaches, and cabanas or sunbeds at your leisure. Let me also add the servers dressed in their black pants, white shirts, and vests on the beach because the beach bar was 30 yards away and people couldn't bother getting up and walk over. Top notch all around, unless you are used to drinking $100 bottles of liquor at home. If that is the case, then go to any Ritz Carlton and pay their prices.
Otherwise, slow down, enjoy the groomed foliage and spectacular views. Feel the warmth of the smiles of the workers. Play in the turquoise waters, or relax by the pools.
For such a small little island, it really does have it all!
Thank you Alexis, you and your staff really did surpass our dreams!
