We stayed from 12th-26th June 2008
My husband and I stayed in the main block, room 207. Our son had a Villa 2201.
The main block is noisy if you get a room above the restaurant, in a morning, with chairs being pushed around, apart from that if you don't mind being woken early its fine. The evening entertainment also starts at 9.45 for an hour, so no chance of an early night!
The Villa's are much quieter and better, if you can, try and book one of those. Many people got one, as just a general upgrade, so may be as well emailing the hotel before you arrive.
Lots of people got a bit of a dicky tummy, but they do sell Pepto Bismol in the hotel shop, which helped everyone. Possibly over indulgence, rather than anything to do with the food. Although do ensure your meat is cooked all the way through, as some meat and sausages were very pink.
Overall its on its way to being a 5 star Hotel. Beautiful setting and staff. Lucie our First Choice rep is definately 5 star, and was very helpful. We booked a jungle safari and it was FAB. Everyone else had bad experiences on trips, but we had a great time. I don't think Samana is ready for tourism at the standard of other resorts yet, but we wanted to get out and about for a day and had no problems. Although why would you want to leave the island for a day anyway?!?
Room Service food was lovely (only waited 30 minutes). The other restaurants were lovely. Slow service in the sea food one. We had a Gala Dinner on the beach for our son's 18th birthday which was lovely. The made him a cake too! Although you do pay extra for the Gala dinner.
The rooms are very spacious and clean, good mini bar, although we only saw Pringles twice! but then we can all find little things to complain about!
The other piece of feedback to look out for was the Gym, at 17 degrees, and sometimes no water, it is not a pleasant place to be. I did give them the feedback so its hoped they would look at this. Having said that I managed to go each day for about 30-45 minutes and took my own water so it wasn't that bad. They could do with another Tennis court also, as only one wasn't sufficient in an evening when it was cooler to play.
The biggest round of applause goes to the Animation team who keep this place going (along with the staff). They work 16 hours per day, for very little money and don't have a big budget to spend. They really do their best, and made our holiday fun. You do not get pestered to join in, but its fun if you do!
Overall I would rate our holiday experience an 11 out of 10, and despite a couple of niggles, we had a great great time.
I would definately recommend to friend and family, and have very happy memories of our time in Cayo and Samana.
