“Perfect - can't wait to return”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2013

My husband and I spent a wonderful week at the Luxury Gran Bahia Cayo Levantado. All of the positive reviews are true, this place really is special. The grounds are amazing and lush. The staff is hard working and extremely professional and friendly. The rooms are spacious and clean and exceptionally comfortable. We stayed in the main building and were very happy with our room. The food is very good at the buffet and the a la carte restaurants. They served top shelf liquor at the bars and it was nice to enjoy a Baileys after dinner on the terrace. The resort never felt crowded even though they were at capacity. You could always find a lounger by a pool or at the beach. This resort is very quiet. If you are looking for somewhere to enjoy some peace and quiet in the in sun then you have found the right spot.
We can't wait to go back, but next time we will be sure to stay for two weeks. One week was not long enough!

If peace and relaxation is what you are looking for, then this could be the place for you. Your holiday starts as soon as you exit the airport, where hotel staff are waiting to check you in, issue wristbands and tag your cases, and the next time you touch your luggage, is when it arrives at your suite or villa. The coach transfer to the private boat terminal takes about one hour, a private taxi is not worth taking up as you only have a longer wait for the boat. At the terminal you are greeted with cool drinks for a comfort break before the ten minute crossing to the island, where again you are greeted with cool moist towels and a drink before collecting your key card and, if you are in a villa, a buggy ride to your door.
All accommodation comes with a good standard of facilities, including air conditioning, a huge four poster bed, spa bath, toiletries & personal hygiene kits, plenty of wardrobe space, plus free safe, wi-fi and a daily stocked mini bar. Maid service is daily with an evening turndown service and chocolates placed on the bed. Cleanliness is of a high standard throughout the resort including all the general facilities which all have scented candles and antiseptic gels are even at the entrances to all of the restaurants. The gardens are maintained and manicured daily along with any repairs to the roadways and paths, (councils take note), making leisurely strolls or jogs through the grounds accident free. For those among us who want to take relaxation to extremes, there is a buggy service that will pick you up and take you to anywhere on the resort, this is a great convenience during the occasional tropical downpours
The main hotel block contains the reception/customer services & internet area, Lobby & Plaza bars, the buffet restaurant, a reasonably priced shop and terracing with stage. The buffet restaurant is spacious, never appeared crowded, has a generous food selection and had theme nights, so there should always be something to take your fancy. There are three a la carte restaurants, Italian, Mediterranean (seafood) and Gourmet, which make good attempts at higher end dining and service. These require reservations at customer services, but visits are unlimited and in my opinion, the Gourmet comes out on top at producing art on a plate and good quality food. The Mediterranean serves a good size lobster, so it you have never tried one, here is your opportunity.
There are two good size swimming pools and a triple Jacuzzi pool, two private beaches and one large beach that is open to the public until 6pm, but nowhere is ever crowded and sunbeds abound, so there is no need to rise at dawn to reserve one, it is frowned upon by the hotel but the practice still goes on for some spots. The beaches are blue flag and are swept daily, they are safe for swimming and have some good snorkelling sites.
All staff, from the manager down, are very pleasant and helpful, nothing is too much trouble for them, although the occasional small tip always helps and it supplements their meagre pay, any problems, if they occur, are dealt with promptly and without fuss
Negatives are hard to find at this resort, but if there is one, albeit minor and you do get used to it, is the inability to flush paper down the loo. The resort is rated as No.1 on Tripadvisor for the area and No.3 out of nearly 500 on the Dominican Republic’s official ratings and I couldn’t find anything to dispute that

My husband and I were looking for a unique place for our honeymoon/vacation. We also wanted to take advantage of a location that was near a town or city that we could explorer. My husband chose Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado, in the Dominican Republic. This is an island within an island. It is an amazing place that not many people know about.

Here's how the vacation went:

We arrived at the airport in Santo Domingo. We booked our travels through our local travel agent who informed us that if we went through apple vacations, we could pay approximately $95 US/person to be transported from the airport to the hotel and back. We thought this was a bit expensive, but after speaking to other hotel guests, some paid $100 US/person each way.

The drive from the Santo Domingo to Samana (the town the resort gates are located), was absolutely amazing. We could not keep our eyes off the scenery, which varied from mountains, plantains and crop fields, to urban living, fast pace motorist, people moving around and the beautiful ocean.

Upon arriving to the hotel, which is a gated and secure entrance, we were greeted by a gentlemen who seemed to have known we were coming and quickly gave us our hotel keys and informed us that we would be taking a short boat ride to the island which is known as Cayo Levantado. We probably waited about 5 minutes.

The boat ride to the island was spectacular. We arrived at around 6PM, which was when the sun was setting, so the welcome was even more memorable.

A gentlemen took our bags and said they would be waiting for us to check in with the front desk, so they could show us our room. The lady at the front desk greeted us with spectacular alcoholic beverages and she gave us a brief verbal tour of the things she thought we would need right away.

We walked to our room, which was upgraded at no extra cost to us, because we told them we were on our honeymoon. When I say upgrade, I mean upgrade! We were upgraded to villa 1 room 1201, which I believe everyone should check out. The view was spectacular. The room was beyond what we've ever stayed in, and it was huge, clean, stocked well and we even got some welcome treats.

We were able to eat a pretty late buffet dinner, which must have been seafood night, because the seafood options were endless (for those with seafood allergies, like myself, there's endless options for you too).

Also, they had a live show at the stage near the buffet restaurant, which was perfect to watch after having an amazing dinner.

They have three non buffet restaurants, which I thought were all pretty good restaurants as well, but I did love going to the buffet restaurants because the theme changed every night. As for the restaurants, make sure to book with guests services the day you arrive, because we booked later the next day and they only had openings for dinner at 9PM. Although I didn't mind it, because we would hit the public beach after, but for the early sleepers, 9PM dinner doesn't seem ideal.

The public beach opened every night at around 11PM, where the hotels guests don't have to pay for drinks, but non guests do. This was great for us, because we loved dancing, drinking and mingling with people. Also, the resort entertainers, whose job is to keep you busy and entertained, would join us at the public beach and would dance with us and even have dance lessons on the small stage. The music is mostly latin music, but feel free to request any music you like to hear, the DJ doesn't seem to mind that you don't want to exactly listen to reggeaton all night.

During the daytime, hit the beach early to catch sunrise and lay on the beach all day, or join the entertainment team like Rosa, Stephan or Gustavo for beach volleyball, Bingo (with prizes), Yoga, or dancing classes. There's always something going on, you just have to want to do it. They leave you alone when you don't want to.

Also at the beach there's a beach bar, which is usually staffed by very smiley, happy to serve you bartenders, and if you speak Spanish you will have the opportunity to learn a bit more about them and connect with them. My husband and I really appreciated the service Jose Pool, the bartender gave us. He was always ready, willing and happy to serve and seemed to always remember the things we said we were going to do throughout the day. By the time we left, we had everyone loving Jose.

Let me add that the entire time we were at this resort, not one person ever asked or implied they needed to get tipped, but these people work hard for little to nothing, so we tipped every time we had some cash on us. Even the restaurants don't exactly require a tip for the servers, but when you get exceptional service, like the hotel staff give, you would feel bad if you didn't tip. I encourage everyone to tip the servers, bartenders and transportation staff. $1 US goes a long way for them.

Also, the resort provides at no extra cost to the guests snorkeling, kayaking, body boards and wind catamaran (you do have to pay $45 for a lesson, if you don't already know how to catamaran).

They also offer snorkeling at an extra cost if you want to go further out into the ocean and diving at an extra cost. Our friend did the diving and he said it was out of this world.

The excursions are offered by whoever you booked your trip with, for example we booked with Apple Vacations, and they offered several excursions at costs varying from ($50-100) each. We did the El Limon Waterfalls excursion, which was absolutely amazing. I have never climbed on a horse and followed a trail, up and down rocks, water and mud to end up a peak of the trial and look at the top of mountains. Then the trail drops down and ends up at the bottom of a waterfall, but only to learn it's the smaller of the waterfalls. The larger fresh waterfalls was mesmerizing. When you look up at approximately 131FT high you see the top of it. The locals in this town volunteer to go up and down these trails with you! (But this is how they make a living so I recommend a $10 tip, which is little compared to the hike they take to please you).

The other excursion we did was the Jeep Safari, which begins at the hotel gate entrance and takes you an hour away to a small village, where you're greeted by local children chasing the jeep to ask for candy from the tourist (take some candy). Then a tour guide, who speaks perfect English, helps you understand the scenery, the history of the Dominican and the importance of plantations. They stop at a villagers house, where they tour you through it and allow you take photos. They sit you down and teach you about all the plantations and serve you a fresh cup of cocoa, coffee, some fresh fruits and potatoes and if you're lucky and you know what fried plantains are you can ask for some and they will make them for you. For lunch they feed you a typical Dominican meal, which consist of white rice, beans, pork and or chicken, yuca and vegetables and throughout this entire trip, they serve you endless cups of rum and coke.

Back at the resort, you can sign up to hit the town of Samana for a few hours on one of the days. You pay $3 US/person to take the boat back from the island to the hotel gate and a greyhound type bus picks you up there and takes you to the Pueblo (town) for shopping. Let me just disclose that they drop you off right in front of the obviously owned by the hotel businesses. My husband and I were looking for the more local feel, so we hired a local street tourist (harmless) to take us to the market and for some Empanadas (which everyone should try) and to a restaurant where we could get some food that wouldn't make us sick. It's all there, you just have to ask around. Everyone is willing to help you.

If you get the opportunity just sit and watch the people and the pace of life there. If you get lucky like us, you can meet the town shoeshiner, who was a Haitian named Peterson, who had his first meal in two days with us and who explained that he just wanted to find work, to pay his rent and eat. Or talk to the business owner who tells us that if he doesn't get to the market early enough he won't be able to buy the chicken or fish needed to keep the restaurant operating for the day. Or meet the average worker, who will tell you they earn $10/day and work 15 hours a day, but they do it with a smile because it's better than nothing.

Either way, you get to go back to the resort and enjoy the rest of your vacation, however you want in the most luxurious place and the most luxurious way. By the way, if you don't make it back to the resort on time to catch a meal at any of the restaurants don't worry, they have a small late night menu, to serve you in your room.

Oh, don't buy cigars from the men that come to the resort to sell them to you. If you're paying more than $10 US for cigars, you've paid to much. Go to the town, or go to the rear of the public beach in the day, where plenty of locals have their goods and will sell for much cheaper.

Ultimately, this is an amazing resort, including your exit from the hotel, where Alexis will make sure your stay met your expectations and will thank you many times for visiting and will reassure you that if you had any complaints to let him know and he will do his best to address them for your future stay.

Room Tip: Email hospitality personnel, like Alexis and tell them what you're looking for. They know the re...

Traveling to Principe Cayo Levantado was an effort for us as we were flying there from Grand Island Nebraska. But we recognized that challenge going in. The outstanding reviews from trip advisor combined with the reasonable price from Book it.com made the three air stops and two hour transfer from Santo Domingo bearable. So for those of you who will be traveling far to get here, pack your patience, it will be worth it. I promise!
We have traveled to other all inclusives over the years but this one was truly a rare gem.
Principe Cayo Levantado is a gorgeous resort on an offshore island. A beautiful tropical paradise which is about a mile around, so you feel very secluded and isolated from the rat race of the real world.
We arrived by boat at about 5pm and the check in process went smoothly. The boat runs to and from the property at all hours (for its guests), so no worries if you are arriving very late from the airport, or departing very early to catch your flight home. Some one will be at the dock to pick you up as long as they have been notified in advance.
We stayed in Villa 10, Rm. #10103. As other trip advisor members have stated, staying in a Villa is very nice. We had an outside jacuzzi and it was quiet and very private, we did not feel awkard in the least sitting in our lounge chairs in our bathrobes sipping drinks. The room itself was large with a king sized bed and a separate jacuzzi bath and separate shower. Two televisions with limited cable service and a mini fridge and coffee maker.
One small clarification, the room has a so called mini bar. When in actuality it is two beers, three airline size liquors(vodka, whiskey, and gin) a tonic water, a couple of water bottles and one bag of chips. If you request anything other than what is assigned to your mini fridge you will be charged. Not that there are not plenty of opportunities to get drinks at the pool bar or at the main bar in the main building -- (which would be a jaunt from Villa 10) However, if you are thinking you are going to relax freely in your jacuzzi with a bottle of champagne or wine, you can, but for a price.
Moving on to the food. I have to admit neither my husband or I have been big fans of buffets. We prefer sit down experiences, even at an all inclusive. We always eat too much at the buffet and when you are putting yourself in a swim suit each day we try to avoid overeating. And buffet style has a tendency to have a sameness to it after eating it day after day. So when we discovered that while at Principe Cayo Levantado our choices for breakfast 7:00-10am and lunch 1-3pm were going to be in the main building and buffet style only, we were uncertain how we'd feel about that for a whole week. However the resort/chefs really did a great job at rotating food items giving us new things to try each morning and noontime. The Dominican Republic has great coffee, rich dark and as I prefer hot! So even on the mornings we ate light, we would sit and sip our coffee watching the morning begin on the property, taking advantage of the outside seating.
We did eat buffet in the evening on three of the nights as they have theme nights with an emphasis on a particularly cuisine. Wednesday we ate Italian, Thursday was the GALA night, and Friday we ate Dominican Republic. All were equally good and had a variety of uniquely different salads, appetizers, main entrees and desserts. But the best night overall was definitely the GALA night. On that night they serve all seafood and you can eat huge crab legs, langostino lobster, calamari, mussels, clams, grilled lobster tail with basil butter and Paella to your hearts content. By far the best seafood we have ever had on a buffet at an all inclusive.
There are three ala carte restaurants, Portofino, Mediterranian, and Dom Pablo. Dom Pablo being the most refined of the three. We ate there twice and each time it was very good. The Orange duck was my favorite. My husband enjoyed the fillet and lobster. It felt like a romantic date night.
A reminder about the ala cartes you must get reservations in advance. Do that as soon as you have checked in or you may miss out on getting to eat at each of them. They are not open everyday.
A few other odds and ends to tell you -
1. Tipping. While it is not expected, we saw many tipping to get better service and undivided attention from the staff. Alot of guests tipped when they were leaving to go home in a gesture of gratitude it seemed to me. So to tip or not, will be up to you. It is not discouraged, but not encouraged either. You will have a great service either way, the staff is highly trained and very accomodating.
2. Best places to catch some rays are either the private beach or the main pool.
If you want low key and laid back definitely the main pool. They have a great pool bar but the music is low and Zen like, and your neighbors on either side of you will either be talking quietly, sleeping or reading. A mixture of ages young and old. All couples though.
If you like lots of activity, and the energy and liveliness of beach volleyball, poolside bingo and other water games/sports -- head for the beach and it's adjacent pool area. The beach bar and the crowd are younger, very cool, and the music is louder and livelier, great island/ beach tunes.
3. Don't miss out on the sunset at the private beach, it is spectacular!
4. When you arrive in the D.R. you will have to pay a $10 tourist fee per person. Plan on having the cash on hand and you will breeze through much quicker. And watch out for the folks in the airport lobby telling you they are your ground transportation when they are really trying to sell time shares. Be certain on who your ground transportation provider is and what exactly they will be wearing or their name, so you know who to look for when you clear customs.
You will love with the solitude and tranquility that Principe Cayo Levantado provides and in the process you very easily could fall in love with your significant other all over again :)
What a great place to reconnect! Go find out for yourself! :)

This was our vacation to Samana and the Luxury Gran Bahia Cayo Levantado, and it was unforgettable. From its unique setting on it's own island, to the immaculately kept grounds, to the spacious well-appointed villas, to the great restaurants, and most memorable of all – the people. The staff were all so helpful, accommodating and genuinely attentive to all of the guests needs and/or wants. We were looking for a getaway from the hustle and bustle, and we found it. You could do as much or as little as you wanted. We met several fellow guests during our stays, and several were frequent repeat guests who come back year after year, and many others were first-timers who couldn’t say enough about their stay and that they (like we) would definitely return. We thoroughly enjoyed our unforgettable getaway to this little corner of paradise that will definitely have us coming back.

Just came back from resort after a week's stay, the weather was great (rain on/off, but short sun showers) & temps. avg 84/degrees during the day (perfect). The food was very good in the restaurants, special Don Paulo's, the buffet was good not great, but buffets are always difficult. Lots of choices, presented very well, always fresh & well maintained. The service was great (if with language differences), they all try to do their best for you and the restaurants were run very well, for service, presentation and selects. The only negative, for us was the bed & pillows are to hard, but that's a personal choice & for others they may like a hard bed/pillow. The beach & pool were super, every thing is well maintained, clean & beautiful. The drinks are awesome, lots of choices, special drinks every day as well a buffet menu changes every day, so you don't get tried of same dishes. The rooms are very large & we had a great balcony, well kept, clean & service comes twice a day to clean, give you towels & turn down service. The resort goes out of the way to see that your needs are meet and you only have to ask once should you need any thing or have any issues. I would highly recommend this resort and we have never gone back to the same resort more then once, this is the only resort we have been to were I would go back again!
