My wife and I traveled to Punta Cana last week (3/16/13 - 3/23/13) and stayed at Now Larimar Punta Cana. It was our first trip to Punta Cana and our second to the Dominican Republic. I'll break down this review into a few categories.
Check-in: The desk attendant was nice and courteous but seemed to not fully understand the amenities or the layout of the resort. He was helpful enough though and recommended an upgrade to the "preferred club" which we did at check-in. We thought preferred club meant more than it did and should have been explained to us by a preferred club staff member at the time we upgraded. Unfortunately for us, our check-in attendant was not part of the preferred club staff. After check-in we had high hopes of getting to our room and getting a drink at the pool. Those hopes ended as soon as we turned around and were greeted by two women with a clipboard. The one with the clipboard said that we had to check in with her. After paying for our stay a minute ago I was a bit confused plus I had my room key already. We were escorted to a table where a nice man introduced himself and basically duplicated the same intro about the layout of the resort and the map of the grounds. After about 30 seconds we realized he was trying to sell us an ownership in the resort's version of a timeshare vacation plan. Really? I just traveled for eleven hours, checked in and paid three thousand dollars and you want to SELL me something. We were polite and after ten minutes said goodbye and headed to the room. We also were solicited three times after leaving restaurants to attend a 90 minute sales breakfast. We were polite and said no thank you after listening to what they had to say but it got a little old.
Room: initial smell was not good but improved. Clean, good maid service and turn down service every other day. Only real negative was fridge did not stay very cold. Water bottles only in the DR so colder is better. Room service was good but limited drinks to three at a time. No satellite television, even in sports bar. (hard to watch NCAA tourney on espn when only thing on espn deportees is soccer, even though I like soccer).
Food: catered to Europeans rather than Americans. Menus were small. Looked for some local foods but found none. Most waitstaff struggled with English. Most resort staff struggled with English. Steak special offered as beef tenderloin was overdone ribeye. French restaurant was very good, all others were about a B minus. Hibachi was good but rushed and left feeling hungry. Appetizers were not readily available. Best place was open air Castaways preferred club restaurant by the beach. Waitstaff there were the best. Having stayed at other all inclusive resorts before where upgrades were available I never expected the food and service to be better only at a preferred restaurant. Shouldn't all restaurants at a resort strive to put out good food and service regardless of preferred status? That status tag should be reserved for beach areas or reservations at the restaurants, not the restaurants themselves.
Preferred club lounge: staff seemed nice but acted as though they were doing you a favor if you asked for anything out of the ordinary like making a dinner reservation or multiple drinks for a group of people.
Beach: sand was nice and water was great. Constant bombardment of solicitors for beach massages and watersports the moment we laid on our chairs. No thank you was not readily accepted by anyone. The watersports kiosks were easy to spot and access. If I wanted to go parasailing I would go sign up. I did not appreciate being asked three times a day to participate. Everyone has to make a living but it was excessive.
Overall we would not return to this resort. If you want average food and nice accommodations it is okay. If you want staff that speaks better Englsh and want to be left alone more than solicited it is not the resort for you. Jellyfish restaurant off resort about ten minutes away by cab was amazing.
