We stayed at the Royal for two weeks during March and we had a wonderful time.
The hotel: The staff inside the hotel lobby area were very friendly and always willing to go out of their way to help. We had an issue with our room while we were there which was reported in the morning and had been sorted before we got back from the pool area in the afternoon.
The Thalassa restaurant is amazing the food is cooked perfectly and the dim lighting makes a nice setting for a romantic meal. The staff there were fab and always attended to our needs. The beach did get a lot of seaweed on some days but the guys would come and clear it away swiftly so it is not really a concern. The grounds of both hotels are very well kept. The king size bed was nice enough and the huge bath tub was amazing! We enjoyed a nice little touch of pool and beach service from the bar. Once we tipped them they seem to come round more often which was extra special.
The Restaurants: We did not try the Tapas or Japanese style restaurant due to the menu and my fussy needs! It was a nice change not having to make a reservation like at other hotels.
The Sea Blue restaurant served very nice lunch time food however we did not eat here in the evenings.
Over on the other side of the hotel at the Catalonia, we tried the main hotels buffet on many occasions. This was very nice and perfect for us as I am a fussy eater. The fresh pasta cooked with your choice of fruit/veg and sauce was lovely. The lady cooking at lunch time was very friendly even though she had little English she would always make an effort to have a little conversation. But beware if you’re a veggie!! I am not sure this hotel understands the meaning of vegetarian so you do have to be careful what you eat even if you have the pasta! They only occasionally rinse out the pan they cook the meals in so if the previous person has chicken/ham in you may find some in your pasta too, which I did on several occasions.
The Italian: This restaurant has a lovely setting, the food was delicious however we only went here twice as on both occasions we went there that the service was very slow. We had not ordered our food and had seen others come in after us who had been served and even eating their starters before we got to order off the menu.
The Mexican: This restaurant was ok, but we did not return. We both ordered the same starter and received two different dishes! My partner ate his anyway but I couldn’t as it had Shrimp in it and I don’t eat fish. So I asked the waiter what is was and requested what I originally ordered. This then arrived and was again a different dish to what either of us received before but was finally the chicken tacos we had both ordered. This was not a good start to the meal so I didn’t have high hopes for the rest of it. The food tasted ok once we received our main meal but I certainly wasn’t a fan.
The Steak House: We both liked the American restaurant. We visited here a few times as the food was very nice. We once had our meals forgotten about but after realising they were swiftly brought to our table shortly afterwards. Once this had happened every time we visited after this Freddy ensured we were always ok. So do not be put off if this happens to you!
We met a member of staff, Juan De La Cruz who never served us in any of the restaurants but bumped into us in the lobby. After chatting to us once he always remembered us and always made an effort if he saw us around to come over and have a chat with us and see how things were going. He was a genuine nice guy.
We enjoyed a couple of stints in the casino and won some money but it can be very smokey at times and it is quite small.
The entertainment team next door where great, probably one of the best I have seen. They created some great shows while we were there and we thoughroughly enjoyed them.
A special mention to the amazing cocktails we enjoyed while we were there. And also the special treat of receiving a fruit bowl and bottle of rum in our room on arrival.
