We are nearing the end of our 1 week stay at the Royal Catalonia- overall we've had a really good time. Our room is in block 44 overlooking the pool which is quite nice- especially during the day so you can run back to your room to use the washroom etc.! We are on the second floor (of 3) which is perfect. When we first got here there was a strong odour of must coming from the room- this was stronger in the rooms on the first floor, and less strong on the third floor. By about the third day it had disappeared.
The food here is "ok"- nothing fantastic, but definitely not terrible (except for the snack bar). I enjoyed the banana fruit drink and the cappuchino's the most at the Talahassa. The Talahassa restaurant is where we ate most often- all of our breakfasts and lunches- standard fare with so so service. The Tapas Restaurant was very good but it is only open for dinner. The snack bar food is AWFUL- do not waste your time over there. The food is deep fried and tastes so bad. We also tried some of the restaurants on the Bavaro side as well. The Italian restaurant was just ok, the Japanese restaurant was quite good with them preparing your food right in front of you, the Mexican restaurant was also quite good. Based on reviews on this site we decided to forego the Steak House. We tried the buffet on the Bavaro side but did not enjoy it at all.
The beach is really small compared to the neighbouring property. It is also FULL of seaweed (not that they can do very much about that- the guys were out raking it up all morning!) There are tons of palm trees blocking the sun so it's a little tough to find room for your chair that isn't on top of someone else. The weather we had was amazing so at least that was a plus. There are two pools with lots of chairs as well so you can also get a spot there. The pools don't seem to be too well maintained and I didn't see anyone check the ph levels even once.
The maids come to your room several times a day. This is quite nice... when you leave and come back you often find they've been there again making sure everything is in order.
The bedrooms are quite large and all have at least a large tub in the center of the room. The king beds are huge as well. Every room seems to have a balcony and the highest you'd have to climb stairs is three levels.
This hotel has no children, but it still had quite a few "rowdy" types who were just here to drink and be loud... not much you can do about that. Overall it was fairly quiet and we had a chance to relax.
On a side note, don't forget the mosquito repellant- they are everywhere!!
Like many other reviews, this hotel is not a 5 star hotel. However, I would say it is a 3.5 star to 4 star. The only real difference I found as compared to some of the super expensive true 5 star hotels was the quality of the food that was served. We still had an amazing time and would definitely recommend this hotel for people that are looking for the biggest bang for their buck. If you're only paying $1000 for a week long all inclusive vacation, what can you really expect to be eating??
