“Riu Palace Bavaro”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2013

We just returned from this resort last week. The rooms and grounds were immaculate and beautiful. The only bad thing about the rooms is that none of the ice machines were working and the mini refrigerators did not keep the beer/soda cold at all. There were 21 of us and no one noticed any cockroaches. In fact the grounds inside and out were constantly being cleaned. We had no problems checking in or out despite the fact that there was a bit of a language barrier. We had no problems with the towels, or getting chairs or service (we do tip) around the pool or at the beach, and the resort was sold out for the week. Out of all the staff we encountered, I would say there was only one gentlemen that was a bit rude to us. There were three days that they had beach parties during the afternoon on the beach and I thought that those were the best meals we had. There were a lot of reviews that claim the buffets are better then the specialty restaurants and I agree 100% with that. Out of the 21 of us I would say half had some kind of stomach problems for one or two days. I strongly suggest that you bring some type of anti acids if going to the DR, as this is not the only resort were I am reading that this is happening. I also read a lot about the pillows being bad. No one in our group thought they were bad and we all slept really well.

We stayed in this hotel for 2 weeks between May and June 2013. There are 5 hotels, all from the RIU group in a large complex. RIU Palace is one of the smaller ones but still it is a big hotel. As most of the hotels in Punta Cana, it is right on the beach, and also has 2 swimming pools plus a little kids pool. The environment is great and most of the days we were able to get pool chairs without problem.

The rooms are very spacious. There is free wi-fi available but it is not very reliable. Some days it worked well (not fast though), and some days you can't even load a web page.

The bars service was great. The food was nice for the first couple of days. However, they are basically the same thing every day at the buffet. There are also several other restaurants which you need to book ahead. You can book up to 3 days in advance including the current day. The Italian restaurant is very popular and the Brazilian restaurant serves really good meat. Again, they have the same menu (just a few choice) every day.

The pool area is comfortable but we saw a lot of floating rubbish and grease near the bigger pool at the opposite end to the swim up bar. They were there all the time and nobody seemed to bother to clean them up.

We lost a pair of sunglasses as we took it off when the sun is not so strong. It was put under the cushion on our chair but we forgot to pick it up when we left. As there are pool boys who lift all the cushions every evening, they must have seen that pair of glasses, but when we asked around the following morning, "nobody had found it". So be careful not to leave anything of value. You won't see it again.

There is a scheduled shuttle which takes hotel guests to the 2 shopping centres if you want to do some shopping. Ask at the reception for the schedule. The staff at the reception are mostly very nice, except for one who had sort of a couldn't care less attitude when we complained about the wifi. We were told "it is like that".

If I go back to Punta Cana, I will probably try another hotel. This one is not bad but staying there once is enough.

Ok, I just returned from this hotel. I have to say at first, I was impressed. Beautiful beach, beautiful resort. But that quickly faded. The first night, I entered my room about 10 pm, and noticed a cockroach scurrying on the floor. I couldn't sleep the whole week. My fridge was warm, after several attempts of telling people that my fridge didn't work, they smiled and said OK. Well, after several tips later, I never got it fixed. Luckily, my teenagers had a room across from us, and we had our cold drinks in there. The last night, I was in there room, and noticed a cockroach over there curtain above there sliders. Let me tell you, I was disgusted and feel very upset. I stayed at Secrets in Montego Bay Jamaica last year, and will be back for my next vacation. Good by RIU

This is not a 4-5 star hotel as advertised. 3 1/2 @ best. 3/5 travelers got diarrheal. housekeeping & pool towels are a joke. Elevators are death traps. Food is not that good, o.k. @ best. Beach is beautiful, grounds are also very nice. Some service staff are very good others have no clue. Tipping goes along way. Would not recommend. Melia tropical & riu palace Bavaro looked a lot nicer for about the same price.

I am seriously disappointed with RIU Palace Punta Cana! You can find cockroaches and ants all over the rooms as well as buffet restaurant . The staff seems not to care about it.This is so beautiful resort, please do something about the roaches!!

This place was very good, as far as Food qty. and Layout, Cleanliness and amenities were concerned. It was worth the Price.
The following things we found that dampened our stay of 7 days a bit.
1. There is no difference between Smoking and Non Smoking Rooms, unfortunately we landed with a room which stank of stale smoke. They did change it after a long hassle and approach to Director Level, front desk in non approachable. Don't care attitude
2. The front desk Personnel are very indifferent and of no help, they seem to pass the buck on and will not take any responsibility.
3. PLEASE WARN YOUR CUSTOMER, THAT THERE IS NO LOST AND FOUND, ONCE THING IS GONE FROM THE ROOM IT IS BYE BYE, SO KEEP THINGS UNDER WRAP.We unfortunately had this experience.
4. The Staff from 9th July to 13th July was excellent and their Customer Service was very good, but come Sunday, shift Change, the attitude was horrible, dishes were not picked up, water was not served, in general the service became pathetic. We did point this to one of the Managers on the floor. It was a long wait to serve, even water or drinks.
5. They Need to Label the food in English, there was lack of food label.
6. On check in time they print a small pamphlet for translation for common Spanish words, this will help non Spanish speaking Guest to not only learn but communicate to staff, who know nil to little English.
7. Entertainment was very good, swimming pool clean and pool exercise was excellent.
8. Night entertainment was great.
Barring the front desk behavior and lack of security of articles in Room, it was the best resorts among their other properties. We ate at all others, Food and Layout here was good. We will try and visit again, once these small l things are ironed out. The Drinks are watered Down a lot or taste funny.

Room Tip: 1 Get Rooms on 2nd floor away from Dining room, try 2110 on wards, facing court yard. 2 Warning...

My husband and I stayed at the Riu Palace in Punta Cana in the end of March to beginning of April. we had a short 4 day stay there but enjoyed ourselves. the resort itself is beautiful, especially the lobby area. the rooms were nice, the only thing was we were given was 2 full sized beds pushed together. It wouldn't have been a problem, except the beds were too easy to move around.

the beach was beautiful, we spent a lot of our time there. the pool was nice but always crowded. a lot of people leave their things on the chairs in the early morning, claiming the chairs, which leaves pretty much nothing for everyone else. I see this happening at most resorts and really feel that the hotel management should do something about this. we did not get a chance to go to the pool at all because we had no place to put down our things. the beach made up for it, but it'd wouldve been nice to at least take a dip in the pool.

the food is average. we were getting tired of it by the 3rd day, I dont think we would've enjoyed staying there a whole week because the food was so repetitive. We were eating at the buffet most of the time. they only really have options for dinner, which were themed restaurants. But these restaurants were pre-booked days in advance by the vacationers who had come earlier. We've stayed at other resorts, were the dinner restaurants do not require reservations days in advance, and we felt that it was much more enjoyable.

overall nice resort, but probably would not return.
