We just returned from five wonderful nights at the Ocean Blue. I will start by saying that many of the negative reviews must be from people that will never be satisfied regardless of how good their experience are.
First, be prepared for a bumpy ride to the Hotel, the roads there are not like what you may be accustomed to, but no big deal. Check in went very smoothly. We were in building 3, third floor end unit, we have no problem with climbing stairs so not a big deal for us, actually, it was good as it provided us with some excercise after all the eating .The room was very nice and always kept clean by our housekeeper "Iris" no damp smells rodents or any of the negative things others have mentioned. The lights are not very bright so if you plan on any late night reading bring some bright bulbs. Next to the headboard are two light switches that control the ceiling fan/light they are kind of behind the lamp so look for them. During peek usage times I did not have sufficient hot water on one day the rest of the time it was okay.
The food:
We had dinner at the Italian and Mexican rest. both were very good. American was not too good, appetizer we ordered called trio or something like that was bland.
The Carey and Tortuga (buffet)same place different entrances . This I believe was my favorite restaurant large food choices lots of good food you can easily over eat here. Have the Kahlua Mousse it is great, better yet try all the deserts.
Lunch is great at any of the buffets, however eat at the beach they have a great selection of foods, such as grilled chicken, ribs, hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza and desserts.
Tours:
Go to the beach turn left and ask for George of the Jungle he can set you up with just about any tour for alot less than anyone else, he has a little tarp roofed sales office just before you get to the other vendors tell him the Cuban sent you he will get you a deal.
Take him a hamburger and some soda it will help with the negotiations. I do not drink much soda so I would carry a back pack full of sodas from my room to the vendors they where much appreciative of this. Negotiate with the vendors, but not so hard that they can't earn a living. Think of how much you would spend on this stuff if you where home and offer them accordingly. These are poor people trying to earn a living. Go on the quad runner tour it was great, bring a swimsuit under your clothes and go swimming in the cave dont forget a towel.
Try archery at the resort or play tennis with 'Edwin' he is a young guy who is happy to be there. I gave him a hat from my work, he was so thankful you would have thought I gave him a hundred bucs.
The pool areas are beautiful, there are two huge pools. Both pools have swim up bars.
Overall the resort is beautiful and very clean the people are very friendly and seem to take pleasure in serving you. Experience this place you will be glad you did. Take school supplies for the kids you will encounter on your tours..
