Having just returned from a 2 week stay at the Punta Cana Iberostar I can honestly say, we had a great time.
The grounds are fantastic, extremely well maintained. Everywhere is very clean considering how large the resort is and the amount of people staying there. We found the food to be very good, lots of freshly cooked options. The mexican and steak house were very good. Our room was cleaned every day (make sure you hang the "please make up the room" sign when you leave in the morning) although I have to admit it did feel as though it had been done in a rush some days, too many rooms too few maids? There was maintenance and upgrades being carried out around the grounds which was nice to see but never a problem.
The beach is great, very safe with lovely walks to the left or right. We never bothered with trying to get chairs at the beach as its a joke. The hotel don't uphold the rule of not reserving chairs even though there are signs everywhere. On our first night we walked to the beach just for a quick look and there were towels out then! People will reserve chairs at the beach and the pool! The Punta Cana pool has been updated while the Dominicana pool feels dated and tired. Both of our children have returned home with ear infections which we put down to the pool. Luckily we made it home before needing to visit the doctor.
The Iberostars best assets are the staff and we can't emphasise this enough, these people work like crazy but are always happy. We didn't come across any grumpy staff, quite the opposite. The entertainment guys are equally friendly and enthusiastic and kept the children entertained whenever they wanted to join in on one of the many activities. The shows were fair to pretty good, made us laugh! The Punta Cana reception bar is nice and relaxed and the Dominicana bar is the place to go for the shows. We were never pressured to joining in, you can do as much or as little as you like. The bars all stock top label spirits but you need to ask for them, once the bar staff know what you like they don't forget! The beach party was a riot, great to see the staff joining in too.
Tipping, it's very much appreciated but not expected.
On site sellers can be a pain in the neck.
We were not particularly impressed with our room, it was small for a family of 4, tired and needs updating. Our hair dryer was disgustingly filthy. It wasn't cleaned for 8 days even after repeated requests, we filled out the customer feedback form at dinner and sure enough it was cleaned. I did email the hotel a week before we travelled with a request explaining that it was a special occasion, I am yet to receive a reply. A great shame.
Lastly we would like to name some of the fantastic staff that helped make our holiday the enjoyable trip that it was, Alex(is) in the Punta Cana dining room, Drinky Drinky Maria, Jenni and Jonny at the Dominicana bar, Yeilan at the Punta Cana reception bar, but most of all Leovaldo this guy always had time for our children especially our son Aaron. Lovely people and we couldn't possibly remember all the names of all the staff we met. I hope the management appreciate the people we have mentioned and the people we haven't, they make your hotel.
