“Is this a good choice?”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2012

I could repeat the comments that have been made by numerous other reviewers, but I will try and keep those brief since if you are reading this you are probably trying to decide whether to stay here or somewhere else, so I will try and comment on factors that might help you decide.

Firstly the hotel is clean, well maintained, and of a good standard. It is often referred to as 5 star, this relates to the facilities, it is not as luxurious as some other hotels we have stayed in, for example in Thailand and Europe, but it is certainly a similar standard to other hotels in places such as Mexico and Cuba. If you want luxury then you will probably need to pay more, this is a great value for money hotel and we were very happy with it.

The buffet food is of a good standard and variety, I realise people are entitled to their opinion, but this is one occasion where if you cannot find a decent meal then you probably need to look at either your diet or your attitude!
We did find it hard to book the themed restaurants, the booking desk was always busy, then it took ages to make our reservations. We actually felt that the food wasn't really much better in these restaurants since the buffet was of such a good standard.

We didn't have a problem communicating with the staff, sometimes you just need a little patience and respect that the staff are mostly on low wages and that they speak our language better than we speak theirs!

WiFi is available in certain areas of the hotel, it is chargeable which I think is poor given most cafes and bars offer it for free nowadays, so even a nominal amount of free time would be good. I think we paid about $12 for 24hrs because we wanted to contact someone for their Birthday, so not that expensive that were lost sleep over it!

You were also required to pay for the room safe, again something that I would expect to be included in this level of hotel, especially as it is an all inclusive one.

We had a maintenance issue in the bathroom and also with the TV, so we filled out the card in the room. By the time we returned to our room both problems had been rectified and we also received a follow up phone call to check we were happy - we were.

I visited the gym once, it was very hot in there, but what spoiled my workout was the fact that there was very loud music playing as well as the staff member watching sport on the TV with the volume very loud to compete with the music. I should have said something, but didn't so probably my own fault, and I chose not to go again.

The Iberostar is set roughly in the middle of a long strip of hotels along the beach. I think this gives it an advantage in that you have two ways to walk along the beach, you can easily walk for about an hour either way, but be prepared for it to be busy, it is certainly the busiest resort I have been to, especially since this is a quieter time of year. However we never had any problems finding a lounger to our liking and certainly there is no need to reserve one.

In comparison to other hotels on the beach, there were some very large ones, e.g. the Riu next door, and especially the Gran Bahia Principe, which looked huge and was noisy on the beach; the Iberostar is large but not excessive.

Overall this is a good functional hotel, with pleasant staff and in a good location, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

One final point, whilst I like to tip in the local currency, you really don't need it, everything is US$.

My fiancee and I stayed at the Iberostar Punta Cana on June of 2012. Better late than never for a review but I had to show my support to one of our favorite chains. Having stayed at the one's in Puerto Plata(Costa Dorada) and Mexico(Tucan), we know what to expect out of our beloved Iberostar and it didn't dissapoint.

Where do I start.

The Beach: Absolutely amazing. The sand feels like heaven on earth through your toes and the Ocean feels like bath water. There was some seaweed in the water but you're in the Ocean so what do you expect. The Punta Cana's area of the Ocean was actually better than the Bavaro/Grand Bavaro. However, the beach itself is completely clean with no seaweed in sight, thanks to the workers. Palapas were a little hard to find later in the day but we never had an issue finding one. For the people that complain about this, they are the ones that just can't be pleased.

The Rooms: The Punta Cana building does need a good painting as the Dominicana has already had been remodeled. That being said, we couldn't have cared less as we stayed in our rooms only to sleep. Our room 5150 had an incredible view of the pools/grounds and was exactly what we wanted. Thank you front desk!! Would recommend this room to anyone. Air conditioning was great. The refrigerators were not that cold but it seems expected when we come down here. Grab some ice if it bothers you. The beds/pillows were very comfortable so don't listen to those complaints either. The maids were amazing and always had our room spotless when we would settle down in the evening. Tip these maids!! They deserve every bit of it. The shower was the best shower we've had down the Carribean too. Amazingly refreshing and plenty of hot water.

The Resort: The prettiest Resort we've been to. The workers get an A+ for what they do. Always had a smile on their faces and were very nice. I wish I could have tipped them all because they make this place seem like paradise. Not much more I can say other than beautiful.

Star Friends: The funnest Iberostar friends by far. They are so nice and try to get everyone involved but will leave you alone if you don't want to be bothered with. The shows at night are fun. If you're expecting Circus Soleil, you're at the wrong Resort. They get the kids involved at the end of every show and it was a hoot watching them dancing/singing. Too cute!!

Bartenders: We visited the Dominicana bars the whole time as the Punta Cana was more layed back. I like to mingle so the Dominicana did not dissapoint. Super Mario, JP, and Jenny were our peeps!! They were always good for a laugh and deserved every tip they got from us. Also, Daniel , who is in charge of most of the bar staff is the man!! We met him when we stayed at our Puerto Plata trip and we had the pleasure of seeing him again here in Punta Cana. I honestly love this man!! My Rum and cokes from this man were the best. Haha. Great times for sure.
Thanks again!!

A La Cartes/Restaurants: We did the Steak restaurant and it was great. The reason that they don't overbook these is so you can have an A+ experience with no long waiting. Great steak too!! The Star Rock Cafe was good for a change too. Bring a long sleeve shirt to this place though. It is a little cool.

The Buffet: This was one of our biggest highlights of our stay. We went to the Dominicana side for our brunch every day. Not sure why but we were glad we did. Henry and Duaney were the nicest people you could ask for. Henry was our waiter almost every day and reffered to me as Big Papi(Being from Boston). This guy is incredible!! We would get our food, come back, and I would have my 2 orange juices with ice, Coffee and water there every time. The guy is Top shelf and honestly was one of our favorite people at this resort. Omelettes are out of this world too. Still miss eating them.

The Shops down the beach: Wasn't really a fan. Bought a couple coffee mugs and some other stuff and they all said made in China on them. Carribean street seemed better and you can haggle with these people too.

The Guests: Now, the only downer from our stay here would be some of the guests. They just seemed like nothing could please them. We did mingle with a couple people here but some of the ones we did meet were complaining of no swim up bar or not enough partying etc. Really?? We would get some looks from some people like we had 3 heads too. Not sure if it's the way we New Englanders carry ourselves or what but it was a little frustrating to see, Especially since we still have friends that we talk to from our Puerto Plata visit. I would say this was the only negative from our stay here. ;-(

Overall: We would definitely stay here again and don't forget to tip these amazing staff members. The Dominican people proved again why it is our favorite destination in the Carribean. Absolute paradise!! A++

Room Tip: 5150 was an awesome room with an amazing view of pools/grounds. Ask front desk for a pool view. You...

This is a little late for our review. Our vacation was March 9th-16th, 2012 and arrived before noon, which we could not get our room until after 3p.m. This was a minor hickup seeing as we changed into our bathing suits & shorts in lobby bathroom and left our locked luggage in the holding area. The front staff gave us our bracelets and told us to enjoy the day and come back for our assigned room. We were travelling with our 17 yr daughter plus her friend and our 21yr. son who is physically challenged. To our delight this resort has elevators in the building complex which was an excellent bonus for him and is very accessible for disabled/challenged guests. Upon our return to the lobby we were graciously given an upgrade as a gift due to our adult son having disabilites - this was not asked for by us but more as a gift from the resort and we can honestly say it was truly nice of them. We were given a suite and our daughter and friend were in the room next to us.
We have travelled to the D.R. previously and other destinations and the food was very good and we only tried one a la carte as the buffet had theme nights from pasta night to mexican to fish night and all were very tasty, We stayed in the Punta Cana side and after trying the buffet in both Dominicana and Punta Cana side, we much preferred the ambiance of the Punta Cana as we found the buffet in Dominicana a little starch with the white tables/seats plus our server in the Punta Cana buffet came to know us quickly and always had a table waiting for us to accomodate our son.
We want to say that the Chef "marcelino" not sure how to spell his name was incredibly wonderful, came to meet us and asked if we needed any special meals for our son which we didn't, but the chef came to see us several times to ensure the food was just right for our family. We want to say a big thank to the Chef.
The buffet poolside is a great alternative in the mornings for breakfast as we did eat there at least 3 mornings as we would get our poolside chairs, have our morning coffee poolside then have our breakfast.
Another great treat is the icecream, yes the icecream ( inside the steakhouse grill near pool)is safe to eat and our son, daughter and friend would go in the afternoons for their treat.
The entertainment staff work very hard to ensure guests are are okay and having a good vacation - we want to give a shout out to "Jonathan" from the entertainment staff as he was very comfortable with our son and his disabilities and would make it a point to give a high five to our son, a hug and talk with him - Johnathan called our son his buddy - super sweet.

All in all we had 7 glorious days of sunshine, great food, great people, easy accomodations for the entire family and would most definitley return. In fact alreay saving to go back

For anyone who complains about this resort, then don't travel! The rooms are not super fancy and is not the massive white elephant next door called "RIU Complex" but as parents who travel each year and bring our physically challenged adult son, this place was excellent and the resort employees from servers, lobby, entertainment and chef went out of their way to ensure our vacation was enjoyable

We stayed from Dec.21 to 26, 2012, The staff was very friendly and worked hard but they had a hard time understanding english and getting change in US dollars was also difficult but overall we liked the resort. The beach, pool area, landscaping, service was great. This is a very large resort so you will be walking a lot and you also have access to the Dominicana resort which is a bonus. This is a great resort for the price and location. Don't be surprised if you see women on the beach topless. I do recommend this all inclusive hotel if you are planning to stay in Punta Cana.

We were very disappointed in our trip to the Iberostar Punta Cana. While we did have a nice time, we were verty disappointed in the rooms, food and entertainment. For a week's stay we were supposed to be able to eat in 3 of the specialty dining rooms, but could only get reservations for 2 and neither were full when we were in there. The buffet food was mediocre at best. The activities for the teens was lacking. For the ages of 13-17 there was not much to do. The shows were terrible, almost laughable most of the time. The grounds were very nice and the wait staff very nice and helpful. I would not come back to this hotel.

Very Impressed with The Iberostar Punta Cana Dec 6th to 13th
The flight was wonderful from Transat Vacations. Our reserved seats on departure and coming home were very comfortable and the entertainment system kept us busy, here before we knew it. Beautifully redone plane. Airport transfers were great.
The resort reception was eased by Hector who had our reservation request in hand when we met with him at the lobby reception desk. He had selected a very special room for us as return guests. It was the best room we have had after 14 trips to Punta Cana. What made it special was that most things were new, balcony sliding door had a screen which made it nice to sleep with the door open, balcony clotheslines , ocean view and that every detail seemed to be taken care of. The safe was $2.00 a day. Wi-Fi is $40.00 for 5 days. Nice bathroom with tub/shower.
The buffet restaurant had good food and a lot of choices. We typically eat at the buffet as it suits our very particular diet needs, and they never disappointed us with the selection they have. Very friendly staff, always willing to help us.
Lunch was fun at the Dominicana beach restaurant which was beachfront with guest volleyball going on. Lots of choice and BBQ every day.
The hotel surrounding is great, lots of greenery. There is access for everyone from babies in strollers to seniors with walkers and wheelchairs. There are several covered boardwalks. There is access to the 3 and 4 story floor rooms by elevators, which we took advantage of.
Beach is beautiful and clean with lots of papulas. Temperature 80+. We walked on the beach for a total of 62 miles in the week, lots of beach both directions.
We are looking forward to returning in February for 2 weeks. Great resort for the price.

Room Tip: Top Floor for beach view
