My husband and I recently returned from 7 nights here to celebrate our honeymoon. We had a very nice and relaxing week here! We thought the landscaping and grounds of the resort were beautiful! Now, the food - the breakfast and dinner buffets were my favorite because of the large variety, though sometimes food temperature wasn't appropriate (cold pizza, pancakes, etc). We tried the Mexican, Asian, and French restaurants. The Mexican and French were pretty good, but we thought the Asian restaurant was awful. Also, I thought all of the restaurants should have more vegetarian options.

The beach and pool were perfect! Even though there were signs that you can't reserve chairs/canopies, we often found that most of the chairs had been "reserved" by towels early in the morning, and no one enforced this rule. Also, no matter where you were, whether it was the beach, pool, nightly shows, etc, there were always people blowing smoke on you. The very few non-smoking areas were not enforced at all.

We had a standard room which was fine for us. The bathroom was nice and spacious, as was the room. There were some small dated things in the room - the rugs were old and worn looking and the lampshades were rusting around the rim and there was a little bit of mold. The first morning one of the maids entered our room at 8:30 without knocking. Otherwise, the rooms were extremely quiet! We never heard a noise from our neighbors :)

All the workers were extremely nice here (and so hard-working). The only problem we noticed was that we had to wait several times at reception, as there was usually only one person working and most of the time there was a line of people waiting and the receptionist was on the phone. Once we wanted to buy an hour of internet ($7 - ridiculous) and had to wait 5 minutes to talk to the person, then he told us we'd need to wait 15 minutes until his co-worker returned.

We would recommend Iberostar Punta Cana to our friends, but we'd probably check out a different resort next time.

Let me preface this review and say before this vacation to the Iberostar Punta Cana I'd only ever stayed at 4-5 stars in Mexico so that's all I can compare it too...

HOTEL: The grounds and rooms at this hotel were really very nice Beautiful gardens and everything inside and outside was very clean. The pool and beach were excellent. We were checked in and out very quickly and easily. Everyone was very laid back and eager to help with whatever you needed or wanted. There was no swim-up pool bar at this hotel which is my fault for not confirming before I booked. There was a bar at the pool just not in the water. Where you get beach towels you can sign out board games and books to use while you are there.

There are two hotels that mirror each other at this resort; the Iberostar Punta Cana (4 star) and the Iberostar Domincana (3+ star). We paid to go to the 4 star but realized as the week went on that everyone at the Dominica had access to everything we did and all the night time activities and shopping was at their resort and everyone we talked to that was staying there paid less than us. I still have no idea what we got that they didn't that we had to pay extra for and that bothered us a bit. We also had to walk over to their hotel for everything pretty much (except pool and beach), it was a short walk but since we were at the premium hotel I felt it was unfair we had that inconvenience.

FOOD: The food at this hotel was ok but not great. The a la cartes didn't offer anything special but if you go to any the Oriental restaurant had the best food we ate all week. There are two blocks of time during the day you cannot get food anywhere and it was a problem. Between 10:30-12 and between 5-7:30. So if you slept in you were out of luck in the morning or if you had an afternoon nap and got up and were hungry you had to wait to 7:30 when the buffet's opened.

ENTERTAINMENT: The bar staff and entertainment staff were really great. Always smiling. Always making sure they said hi everyday and tried to get you to dance or participate in activities and were quick to make a joke at their own expense just to make you laugh. They definitely made the trip. The entertainment itself sucked. I sort of can't blame the staff because they literally work at least 20 hours a day and I don't see when they could possibly have time to practice or even put a real show together (or sleep! we felt really bad for them). In Mexico you get choreographed actual shows, this was not the case in Punta Cana. The daytime entertainment was mostly three stooges type antyics by the pool and the night shows were just pathetic. There was some choreography but it was so simple they could learn it in one training session. They all could sing really well though.

OTHER: The stuff you can buy at the resort is overpriced. If you walk down the beach there's a market right on the water and you can get paintings and bags and towels and all the touristy stuff much cheaper and you can negotiate. I bought two paintings, botht hey wanted $400 each for and I ended up paying $90 for one and $75 for the other from separate vendors.

CLOSING COMMENTS: I would go back to this hotel but at 3 star prices not 4 star.

Room Tip: We had room 5262 and it was excellent! No bugs of any kind. Great view of the garden/pool area and q...

Dear guests,
In the name of Mrs. Helena Santos, Hotel Manager, we thank you for choosing Iberostar Punta Cana for your holidays and for writing some comments about your stay among us.
We appreciate your positive valuation about the cleanness and beauty of our premises and the friendliness of our staff members, especially our bartenders and Star Friends. In Iberostar we aim our valuable guests to “enjoy being a Star”.
I would like to clarify though some points that you stated in the review. Firstly, it is not a real approach to reality that rates for Iberostar Punta Cana are more expensive than Iberostar Dominicana. We sell standard rooms from both hotels at the same price. Rates may vary from Tour Operator to Tour Operator and from Travel Agency to Travel Agency. However, as I wrote before, same prices for standard rooms apply for Dominicana and Punta Cana. We advise our beloved guests to consult all possibilities to obtain better prices: regular travel agencies, online travel agencies and our official website. All these options may include some especial offer and discounts. We also want to emphasize that ocean view, Junior Suite and family rooms have extra costs and are part of our upgrades options. Secondly, our buffets works from 6:30 pm until 10:00pm, as the first sitting of our a la carte restaurants including our Star Café in which our guests do not require to book.
We will be pleased to welcome you back in one of the mentioned hotels. We remain at your disposition for further assistance.

We stayed at the Iberostar Punta Cana November 26 - December 2. It was our first time in Domenican Republic, so since I had been to an Iberostar in Mexico before, I thought this hotel chain would be a safe bet. The resort grounds were beautiful. The pool area was huge and there were plenty of chairs in the shade and in the sun. The rooms were very nice and clean. Service provided by the staff was excellent. Our mini bar was stocked everyday with plenty of water and pop and the sheets were changed everyday. The entertainment staff were very energetic and did a good job at trying to get everyone involved in activities. The food at the buffet was okay. We were always able to find something that we liked. We did eat at a few of the a la carte restaurants. We tried the oriental, french the steakhouse and the Rock star cafe. We did not like the oriental or the Rock star cafe but did enjoy the french and steakhouse. The only issue with the steakhouse is that it is on the beach so you are walking and sitting in the sand so only wear flip flops or sandals.
We stayed in room 5246 which was right at the end of the building so the balcony overlooked the pool and the ocean. It was nice and close to the pool area which we requested.
Overall, I would recommend this Hotel to friends and family and if I ever visited D.R. again I would probably stay here. Although, as a side note, the Iberostar Domenicana is attached to the Iberostar Punta Cana and both hotels share the same pools, beach and restaurants so either one would be good.
I'm going to Cuba in January, and will be staying at the Iberostar Laguna Azul, so hopefully that resort will be as nice as this one.

One warning I would have for travellers to D.R. that has nothing to do with my hotel rating is beware of the baggage handlers or porters at the airport when arriving in Punta Cana. They are absolutely vicious and insistent on taking your luggage for you. They actually take your bags off of the carousel before you get there and hang on to them until you try to claim them. A simple "No thank you" will not do for these guys. They will still insist they take your bags for you out to your bus or taxi. You have to be quite forceful with them.

First off I will say that if you are looking for a resort that is ideal for kicking back and just relaxing with a few options for provided activities then you can't go wrong here. It's got a bit of something for everyone but seems to cater more to adults rather than families, though there are some child activities and areas. Another thing to remember is that you have access to the neigbouring Iberostar Dominicana but not to the Iberostar Bavaro.

The Rooms: They upgraded us to Junior Suites when we arrived. They aren't anything overly spectacular but they are very nice and were very clean. Our room was starting to show some minor wear and tear, but it was well kept.

The Pool: Nice pool. There are two of them, no swim up bar though, the swim up bar is at the Bavaro. Pool is fairly well maintained too and there are PILES of chairs and cabanas.

The Food: Good. It's not incredible, but it is better than many places I have been. Please bear in mind that I am extremely picky about food and a brutal critic. The main buffet I give a 3.5/5, the beach grill on the Dominican side gets a 3/5 but the beach grill on the Punta Cana side gets a 4/5 and for some reason was far less busy. The A La Carte are a different story. They have 5 ot 6, of course you can only go to 3 of them on a 7 night stay, we looked at the menus and settled on the French restaurant, Steakhouse, and Seafood restaurant. The French restaurant menu that they show you looks good, but when you show up for your "romatic dinner" they actually only give you one choice in each menu category. The appetizer was disgusting but fortunately it got better from there. The steakhouse is down at the beach and is pretty good, but don't expect the same food you would get in Canada or the US, medium often equals rare and the cuts of meat aren't comparable, but they did a decent job. The seafood restaurant was a disaster. The appetizer bar was pretty weak, the entree's sucked. I still give the food a 3.5/5 here though because they keep the eating areas very clean and there is lots to go around.

The Service: Good. Housekeeping was excellent and by day our maid was skipping our room on her round and coming back to it around 2PM because she knew that I would be sleeping until at least 1030 and then enjoying a cigar on our patio and not actually heading out to the beach or pool until at least 1130 or noon. When we returned every night before dinner our room was clean. The waiters need work, very disorganized everywhere except for the main dining buffet. The A La Cartes were horrible and you would have a different waiter stopping by every couple of minutes while your "needs" were not met. They haven't grasped the "assigned table system" so things could be pretty scattered. Front desk was fairly accomodating. The shops were fun and the sales people not too pushy at all. English can be a bit of a problem for some though. All of the staff were quite friendly and if they had any fault overall it was that a few of them almost seemed to eager to please.....but you can't complain about that.

Entertainment. Sub par. The "shows" were pretty lame and way too loud.....as if volume makes up for lack of quality? The watersports guys were brutal and we were turned away and told, "So-and-so isn't here today, come tomorrow." on numerous occasions, they also badgered for tips even after doing nothing and being completely lazy. Dive shop people were great though.

Overall I have to recommend this resort, especially for the price we paid. $900/person taxes in for 7 nights including flight. Yeah, can't go wrong. We went with my brother-in-law and his girlfriend, and both they, and my wife and I, agreed we would go back.

We just returned after spending 6 nights at this all-inclusive. Bottom line -- we would return if we go back to the DR. The service was probably the best part of our trip. The staff were always friendly and willing to take care of our needs. They provide consistently amazing service. When we arrived we were greeted immediately and check in was very smooth, and then we were given frozen fruit punch drinks that were tasty and refreshing after our long trip. We were taken to our room which had a musty smell -- although it was very clean. By the next morning it had not lessened. We told the front desk about it and they changed us to a nicer room at no cost. We called the front desk because the safe was not working and someone came up and fixed it within 10 minutes.

The grounds were beautiful and well-kept. The pools were large with plenty of space for everyone, and the beach was immaculate and absolutely perfect. There were plenty of chairs at the pool and on the beach and we had no problem each day getting under an umbrella, even though we got there late. There were real live flamingos in a little pool next to one of the dining halls, which was a really special treat for me (admittedly a flamingo lover).

Internet is not free, but available for a reasonable cost. I suggest if you need to check into e-mail or facebook daily (to check on things at home, not work!) that you get the 5 day plan. If you have a regular laptop there is a wired version in the room. Wireless was available for those who could not use the cable in the lobby area and by the pool. It was pretty fast and worked well.

I recommend the spa services. I went for the massage and facial, and both were among the best I've ever had. I didn't go until the last day, but wish I had gotten more than one of those amazing massages.

The food was nothing to get excited about, but reasonably good. Each morning they had someone making omelets upon request and they were my personal favorites. There is a huge selection of really good breads, and always an ample supply of tropical fruit. We ate at the American, Asian, and Seafood restaurants, and almost preferred the regular buffet style dining hall. They do offer a vast selection of foods and desserts at each meal, but nothing stood out as being amazing. I wish they would have offered more Dominican and Caribbean foods, and that they would have had a specialty Dominican restaurant there. Wine was offered with lunch and dinner which was a nice touch, and beverages were served at the table. Overall, we did not get excited about the food, but also did not go hungry. There was always something enjoyable to be found. There are food places all around the resort, including down on the beach, and there are bars for mixed drinks (with or without alcohol) all over the place.

For those who are interested in shopping, there is a van that picks people up at the resort and takes them to a local shopping center. We were able to get less expensive gifts, and browse a large grocery store. We got some gifts and other items at the grocery store cheaper than we found them anywhere else (the mamajuana and Dominican coffee). If you've forgotten sunscreen or other toiletries, I suggest getting them there too. The shopping center has all types of shops serving both locals and tourists.

In summary, I recommend this resort. Any shortcomings in the food were overcome by the service and overall atmosphere.

Room Tip: I suggest you might want to spend a little extra for the Junior Suites, although they are closer to...
