“Fantastic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2013

This has been the 8th time traveling to Punta Cana and the first time at the Majestic Colonial. From arrival to departure and during our stay I can't say enough about the Management and staff at the Hotel. The entire team was professional - entertaining and service oriented. I had the pleasure to meet the General Manager as well and it allowed me to understand why the team works so well and strives for excellent service. They have combined a great Hotel as well as integrated a certain local flavor which makes it different from the other Hotel's I have stayed in the passed. I would highly recommend this Hotel if visiting Punta Cana.

We stayed here in June of 2013 for a wedding. We had a Colonial Club Suite with a Jaccuzi, supposedly this is the newly renovated club towers that were done less than 2 years ago. Are you kidding me? this place needs a complete redo, rooms were hot, A/C does not go below 20 C, paint was chipping the rooms, bathrooms not fully finished. Did not care for the open bathroom layout, there is no privacy. Rooms are spacious though.
Food was terrible for the most part, drinks were watered down. We had one bottle of liquor stolen from our room. One night we return to the room, the door was unlocked and left open after the turn down service.
The shows were terrible, No internet connections in the room. They tell you that the internet works but good luck with that. No internet connection in the lobby, ONLY in the colonial club room and very very very slow if you are lucky enough to get a signal.....

We had a wonderful relaxing time at the majestic colonial. We stayed at the Colonial Club side and were well taken care of by our butler De Leon! We had the beautiful bath set up one night and he helped us out throughout our stay, thank you De Leon for making our trip that much nicer! I LOVED our room; we had the ocean front with the outside Jacuzzi. What an amazing view! The food was fine, we always found something that worked for us and the drinks were tasty. We brought the bubba mugs and we were glad we did, they kept everything cold for hours. We also brought our own pool floats, the person at the towel hut was kind enough to inflate them for us (I’m sorry I don’t remember your name, but thank you!) Everyone was nice and welcoming; I really don’t know how someone can have a problem with service. Overall great stay!

Room Tip: go with Ocean Front! Great View!

The service was below par, people were not happy to help you. There were a few staff members that were good but the overall staff was not happy to help you. Even when tipped it did not change their attitude. The bars were under staffed, sometimes it would take 10+ minutes to get a drink.
The food was below par as well, we ate at every restaurant trying to find something that was good but every restaurant seemed to serve a variation of the same food. The buffets served the same food everyday. Some food was cold. Im sure it is hard to serve good food for a large resort like this but i was very disappointed. They served all the lowest quality of alcohol. The rum was cheap, there was only one kind of beer. The white wine was terrible. The red was good.
The resort location is far from all excursions, we were the first ones to be picked up and the last ones to be dropped off. The beaches were pretty but the water was rough being on the atlantic side. We went parasailing and people were being sick over the edge of the boat. We were only on the boat for about 30-45 minutes total. We did an excursion that took us to the carribean side of the island and the water was great there.
I would not recommend this resort and will not be returning to the dominican republic. I have had better experiences in Mexico.

This was our first time to Punta Cana and the Majestic Colonial, and this was a fantastic vacation.

For those who have never been to the Punta Cana airport, we were surprised by the fact that there was no A/C in the airport when going through customs, but of course, we are in the tropics, so no big deal, right!? We arranged our transportation separately through Dominican Quest Transfers and they were johnny-on-the-spot and provided great service.

We were in the Colonial Club and the little bit extra cost was worth it as you had separate concierge and check-in and we appreciated the extra pillow menu. The room had a good layout as the shower and toilet were separate with separate vanities and a jacuzzi in the room. We stayed in room 4306 (3rd floor of building) and the A/C in the room was great (it never turned off as has happened to us at other resorts)!!

PROS (highlights for us):
- service - excellent, especially at breakfast. We loved how they had a "coffee boy" whose sole job was to walk around filling and refilling coffee all the while shouting "el cafe and coffee boy." In addition the service at the buffet and restaurants was consistently good.
- buffets - good food with good variety.
- specialty restaurants - no reservations required big plus for us and it was a relaxed dress code for men (my husband wore nice shorts).
- Colonial Club lounge - plenty of soda/water/drinks and snacks available, access to use computers and free WiFi (I was also able to get WiFi in our room).
- pool/beach - there is plenty of pool(s) to enjoy from active and quiet pools to the Colonial Club pool. The thatch palapas and loungers at the pool and beach are awesome and you have plenty of room between you and your neighbor and not crammed together.
- towel service - we loved the towel service at the Colonial Club and the towels were of great quality.

CONS:
- pool - the bathrooms are not the most convenient to the pool.
- water - no purified water in the room but this is not a major deal but you do go through a lot of bottled water brushing your teeth.

We went to another resort while we were in Punta Cana and this was our favorite, and it is worth what you pay. We have also been to several resorts in the Riviera Maya in Mexico and the Colonial is in our top tier. We will definitely return here when we return to PC.

My husband and I stayed at the Majestic Colonial for our anniversary April 13-20, 2013. We had a wonderful vacation. The resort grounds were beautiful and well maintained. We opted for the Colonial Club and thought it was worth the money, however, we never did get a butler the whole week we were there. I think it was because we didn't arrive until very late at night and the Club lounge was already closed for the night so we probably just fell through the cracks. It wasn't a big deal to us, we didn't feel we needed one. We enjoyed the Club lounge area, it was nice to have somewhere to go to use the internet and get a snack or some water before hitting the beach.

The room was very spacioius and kept very clean. We had a first floor room facing the Elegance. It could get a bit noisy when the youngsters came back from the club but we're pretty easy going and don't let the little things get us down. Mini bar was stocked everyday with water, beer, and soda.

We felt the food was typical all inclusive food. The buffets did serve the same things each day but there was so many things to choose from we didn't get too bored with it. Only ate breakfast at the buffet twice, but it was alright. Loved all the fresh juices. We really enjoyed the Mexican/Dominican restaurant. The Japanese place was awesome as well. We thought the seafood restaurant was great, however, the steakhouse wasn't at the top of our list. LeGourmet was good too.

The beach was wonderful and very clean, no seaweed. Never had a problem finding a chair at the beach or any of the pools. The funjestic team was awesome, always trying to get people involved. There was good entertainment in the evenings.

Overall we really enjoyed this resort. We don't usually like to travel to the same place twice but will be returning to the Majestic!

I've stayed at a couple of all inclusive hotels in the Caribbean so I'm going to do my best to write a fair review on this resort. We have overall a good vacation here traveling as a couple on a 7 night trip, with both good and bad points. We stayed in the adults-only Colonial club. At check in, our "butler" - In The House #5 - met us enthusiastically and got us checked in and showed us our room. He offered us a tour of the grounds, but we had a long trip in and we very tired so he just took us to our room. We asked if it would be possible to have a tour later on, and he stated that no, it was only available upon first arrival. So that was slightly disappointing. He showed us the pamphlet of the resort, which did not seem to be completely up to date, but was helpful enough that we were able to find our way around. We felt like the butler as well as many of the employees were a little bit over-the-top, in-your-face and slightly pushy. We assumed this was because they wanted a tip. We were slightly turned off by this but did offer tips when it felt appropriate - not each and every time we got a drink, etc., but as we felt necessary. Others of the staff were great and very friendly and helpful without being overly pushy, which we appreciated. Our room smelled musty on the first day but either we got used to the smell or it aired out throughout the trip because we didn't notice it after a couple of days. On the first day we were having trouble getting the TV to turn on (it eventually did work but there was only a few english channels) and my boyfriend was poking around behind the TV stand trying to get it to turn on and he said he saw a ton of tiny bugs behind the tv stand - which was skeevy but we just tried not to think about it. The housekeeper who cleaned our room was very friendly and sweet and did a good job keeping the room clean. We got water, soda and beer restocked in our fridge each day. They give you a couple of chocolate bars on the first day but they were never replaced - bummer because the desserts at the restaurants are lacking - more on the food later. They also give you a bottle of champagne which we drank and bottles of what I think was rum, scotch, and vodka, in the beginning of your stay in your room - we never even opened them. As for the rooms, the walls are thin, as can be expected at resorts like this. We overheard an argument between a couple that seemed to be coming from the floor below us and seemed to be almost escalating to violence and was a little scary - we contemplated calling the hotel but eventually we just left the room and forgot about it since it was hard to pinpoint where exactly the screaming was coming from. We also had a couple of nights of hearing loud, drunken yelling in the hallways around 2am which was annoying. We were thinking the "adults-only" section would be quieter, but in reality, it wasn't. Our balcony just had a view of another building (I think the Elegance resort) so we didn't spend much time out there. We tried out the jacuzzi once and it was nice. Onto the food. The food, as is the case at most places like this, was edible but not great. The breakfast buffet had a lot of options and we tried mostly everything. Nothing was fantastic and I ended up eating mostly cereal, bananas, and yogurts for breakfasts - which was fine by me. We did lunch at the buffet-style restaurant near the beach every day. The options were mosly the same each day, and consisted of pastas, a salad bar, a burger, etc. Nothing special but it was fine. For dinners we tried the mexican restaurant (so-so), the seafood restaurant (pretty bad), the japanese restaurant (so-so), and the steak house (the best of the bunch). One night at the seafood restaurant we waited for about 20 minutes while other, large parties that we saw seated after us had their orders taken - eventually we just got up and left and skipped dinner that night. The drinks are constantly flowing - at the restaurants they will pretty much keep filling your glass or bringing you refills until you phsyically stop them from doing so. We drank a lot of champagne and wine with our meals which we enjoyed. My boyfriend got violently ill on one night and we are not sure what the cause was - must have been some type of food or drink he had. But he was fine the next day and I never had any ill effects. I would recommend bringing immodium just in case. He took it as a precaution after he got sick and never had another episode. The beach is gorgeous and there are people constantly taking your drink orders, or you can go up to the bar yourself. We walked all the way down the beach past a few other resorts to a secluded beach with huge waves - not sure if this is technically allowed but it was fun and nobody ever stopped us. We stayed at the adults-only section of beach most of the time, which was pretty quiet and we never had trouble finding chairs. We witnessed at least 3 weddings per day, which is kind of weird because it feels like you are sort of intruding on these people's special moments since you are literally sitting a few steps away from them. The pools were nice and you could always find a quiet area. We never tried any of the water sports - I saw 2 people flip over in their kayaks (the waves are kind of big) - but my boyfriend did get a snorkle one day but there really isn't anything to see in the water. A few fish. There are literally no shells on this beach, only a few small pieces of coral. The main pool has a big bar with loud music and sort of a "party" area which we tried to hang out in one day but it ended up being too crowded and annoying so we left. There were also "miss bikini" and the sexiest man contests, etc. on the main beach- It feels slightly like they are trying to push the resort as a party spot which is not what we were looking for, but I can't speak for everyone else who stays here. I definitely would avoid this place around spring break unless you're looking for party central. We got a couples massage at the spa one day for $180- not a bad price and it was a decent massage. They did a BBQ beach party one night which we attended and watched some of the entertainment for a bit and ate burgers. The michael jackson show at the theater was great. We tried attending a few other shows but weren't impressed with any of the other ones. There is a small bar that had music a few nights which we went to and they encourage you to dance and enjoy yourself which was fun. We never tried out the sports bar, disco or casino. We noticed that the same songs play around the resort over and over- not the fun, caribbean reggae songs that we expected but just kind of upbeat songs that we ended up finding slightly annoying. We got a few bug bites but nothing major - we noticed that there were not many bugs, birds, lizards, or really any other type of wildlife which we found a little unusual - just an observation. The wireless internet included with the Colonial Club stay was supposed to be available in the Colonial Club lounge (where they have drinks, small snacks, and a tv 24hrs a day) but I found it to be spotty and didn't always work.

Overall, I would recommend this place to someone looking for a decent all-inclusive, although I don't think I would return again.
