I give this resort an over-all excellent rating because the attitude and focus on customer service makes up for any perceived deficiencies. We stayed from November 30 - December 7, 2013. We stayed in a preferred club room in building 6 of the complex. The preferred club room was an automatic upgrade due to booking through Apple Vacations during a promotion.
The staff was very enthusiastic from the moment we checked in until the moment we left. They seamed extremely interested in making sure we were well taken care of. We were asked multiple times by several people throughout our stay if there was anything we needed. Everyone was quick with an hola and a smile. We are used to friendly treatment in the all-inclusives we have stayed at but here they seemed a little more upbeat and happy.
The Pools,Beach and Grounds,
The entire complex is in very good maintenance with a very expansive free form pool. If you like the free form style of pool this is one of the better ones I've seen. There are plenty of lounges available and plenty of shade due to the mature palm trees and palapas throughout the pool area. If you are more sun by the pool you might be happier booking a ground level room in buildings 1-5. They each have a yard area and lounges outside your room adjacent to the pool that get sun all day. Most areas of the pool get sun for portions of the day but you might have to chase the sun a little. Overall the mixture of plants and pool make this a very pretty pool area. The beach area in front of the resort property is not real long but there is plenty of room duet the wist of the beach. The sand is soft and a walk to the north west away from the resort will take you past some beach side gift shops and beach bars. The gardens and grounds throughout the complex are very well kept up and the growth is mature. There are peacocks and flamingos on the proper as well.
Our favorite restaurants were the Seaside Grill and the Portofino although each of the ale carts was very good. One of the things that we liked the most is that we didn't have to make reservations. We never had to wait for a table. There are 3 tables in the Japanese restaurant for show cooking for 3 settings per night which have to be reserved but there is no need to book a reservation for a regular table there. We did not eat at the french restaurant but everyone you talk to says it is very good as well. The food quality in the ale carts was very high. One of the perks of the preferred club is that you may eat breakfast fem a menu in 3 of the ale cart restaurants. We took advantage of this for two of the seven days of our stay. We found the buffet to be a more enjoyable breakfast option due to the amount of choices available. Burgers, hotdogs, nachos, and grilled chicken are available at the beachside grill and a cooking station by the pool bar with the swings. Every day around noon something something like fajitas will be grilled and offered until it is gone. There is also a fruit stand where a young lady makes fruit kabobs on a daily basis from around 11AM until around 1 PM.
The Preferred Club:
The preferred club for us was an automatic upgrade offered by the agency we booked through. I believe there are 2 buildings designated to preferred guests. I know from experience that building 6 is preferred club. I don't think there is any difference in the room quality from regular to preferred club. The preferred club privileges include a lounge with top shelf liquor, domestic beers, and appetizers. There is supposed to be an upgraded minibar service in your room although this was not important to us. Three ale cart restaurants offer breakfast and lunch exclusively to preferred club guests the other ale carts are only open for supper. There is an area of the beach that is supposed to be for preferred club but I don't know if they in force it. Again, I don't think there is any type of increase in room quality when choosing preferred club level so if the things I listed earlier aren't important to you than it probably is not worth taking a lesser room type at the same price in the preferred club building(s) when you could upgrade to a larger room outside of the preferred club.
I see a lot of bad reviews about location but I'm not sure why. It could possibly be because it is not in the type of hotel zone area like you would see in Cancun, Cabo, or even the Bavaro area down the coast closer to Punta Cana itself. The resort properties are a more spread out near Dreams Punta Cana. This gives it a little more of the look of a Corona commercial where you have longer expanses of undeveloped beach. Again, a walk up the beach in this atmosphere is pretty neat. As far as the ride from the airport goes. It was a ride of 30 minutes on our non-stop transfer from the airport. I was actually expecting more like 60 - 70 minutes as I read more than once but I think that was before they upgraded the highway. Taking this into consideration, you are probably only a 1/2 hour drive from a lot of the day trips offered.
I am adding this as the last portion of my review because although the room was a bit of a disappointment, I don't think it should move the needle enough to keep one from booking this property. I don't want anyone to have the impression that the room review should keep someone from booking a room here, even if you are booking the entry level deluxe room. Even though the room was an upgrade to the preferred club deluxe level, this upgrade was more an upgrade of privileges, not room quality. The deluxe room is basically the same as the Jr suite level you will see referenced by many other properties. The room was below average in size compared to what we have been used to in the typical Jr suite level of rooms from our Mexico trips. This was our first trip to the Dominican and this may or may not be typical. The room was a little tired but seemed to be in good maintenance. The air worked exceptionally, almost too good. The lighting in the bathroom was poor but the bathroom was in good condition although very small and nothing special. It did have a granite counter top and ceramic tile shower surround. The room being on the ground floor, was very convenient because it allowed us to easily use our own bathroom with just a short walk from the area of the pool that we used the most. The room was cleaned every day at the same general time and the maid service was very good. We have stayed in pretty much every level of room in all-inclusives but this room is not what would bring me back. That being said, at check-out we asked if we could see what the upgrade to the next level would be and they showed us a preferred club jr. suite. The room was just above our room in the same building but was double in size and had a separate living room area and a jacuzzi on the deck. It would be a very nice upgrade.
