“Some good some bad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2014

Overall very good but.....

The good:
The room was excellent, large and well equipped. Some very nice high tech and privacy touches. The private pool was great and the breakfast first class.

Some not so great things:
1. The private beach is small and the crowd is questionable. It seems like a popular wedding destination for locals and eastern Europeans with two or three weddings per day and non stop photo shoots. It's cute at first but I think it's too much reality t.v. when trying to have a quiet vacation
2. The resort is a $50 cab ride from any other restaurant so I suggest you get a full board option or expect to pay another $200-300 per day for meals. It feels wrong to pay $50 for a burger....
3. The biggest concern was the power outages that happened every other day. One knocked down the internet and tv for more than 24 hours and the second resulted in no water for half a day (no shower, no toilet). The response of the staff to this inconvenience was 'it's not our fault, it's the town'. I expect better from a > $1,000/night hotel...

If they can fix #3 and you can live with 1 & 2, it's a very nice high end resort.

We recently returned from a wonderful trip at Eden Roc. The other reviews are spot on, the staff here is wonderful. We were greeted every morning at breakfast with huge smiles and staff that was genuinely eager to make us happy. We are not high maintenance guests and generally don't ask for anything unusual, but the feeling here is whatever you want you can get. If something isn't on the menu, they'll figure out how to make it happen.

The grounds and villas are new and in very good condition. Out 1 bedroom was perfect and coming back everyday from the beach to your private pool was a dream. As others have said, the garden view rooms seem to offer more privacy than the lagoon rooms but it will probably change in a few years when everything grows in.

The beach is great with powder soft sand, tons of private chairs, umbrellas and shade if wanted. The biggest complaint we had was the service on the beach, it was less than attentive. The staff tended to disappear beneath the shade and sometimes we found it quite difficult to hail them. It would be great if there was a way to get their attention, like having flags on the lounge chairs found at other resorts.

We ate at La Palapa for a lot of our meals and found the food to be good. Its not great, but by Caribbean standards it was quite good. We actually would loved to have been able to have an additional option that was a bit more casual, like a grill serving basics: chicken, burgers, hot dogs, fish etc. There were a lot of South Americans staying when we were there so maybe their culinary requests are different, but these Americans would have loved some basic grilled food as a lunch alternative.

Its very easy to love this place whether you're a family or a couple on a romantic getaway and Eden Roc caters to all. Go stay here and have a great time.

We just returned from an awesome Anniversary celebration where the staff went above and beyond! It was our first time to the DR and it did not disappoint. The transportation was spot on provided by the hotel! The airport was very nice- reminded me of Hawaii a bit and looked like one big tiki hut! (Outside of Cap Cana, we can't comment on anything else related to the DR as we never left the immediate area.)

Huge thanks to Elesio at Eden Roc who truly made our special trip so worth it in many ways we just would not know where to begin to thank him. We went above and beyond and even went on his day off to pick up a gift we promised for a friend! In fact, he offered to do this for us while working back to back shifts. Honestly, one very special, classy guy that is very soft spoken. The hotel staff is truly something special... some of the very best people we have been exposed to at ANY high end hotel (including some of the best in Europe, and in Mexico). Yes, at times a bit of a language barrier (minimal) as some folks have already mentioned...but it's not the US so this is expected, isn't it? It was FUN as we practiced our Spanish (which is poquito at best)!

Room: We stayed in a (basic) Junior Villa which was beautiful and spent much time relaxing in the pool in the afternoons. I felt it to be fairly private overall..landscaping needs to grow just a bit to be a bit more private. Staff always so willing to help with ANY requests you may have. The room was just beautiful and the pictures don't do it justice. The outdoor shower was great vs the indoor shower (rainfall) that frankly just did not work all that well (weak pressure). The pool was tepid (not heated) but with the great weather, was just perfect and impeccably kept with cleaning daily. (believe me when I say I like a warm pool but I was not disappointed). Agree with other reviewers that the walk in closet was perfect and actually helped to keep our (smaller) room organized for 6 days. Note, some of the rooms are absolutely huge at this resort (like a size of a home with pools for families).
I will disclose that in the past 4-5 years, we have chosen hotels with private plunge pools in the room and this room rivals ANY of them! We am now hooked and yep, spoiled! We have stayed at both Capella Hotels in Mexico, Viceroy (formerly Tides in Mexico(, Ladera,in St. Lucia, etc. etc., and all of them VERY nice too... This hotel (Eden Roc) is one of the very nicest we have stayed at to date!!!! The reason you ask...The Staff!

Food: Agree with other reviewers- sushi was outstanding--La Palapa very good and quite consistent as we ate there much. They offer fresh fish each day.
The Mediterranean Restaurant was also good, a bit more limited menu but very good quality (imported meats- can you tell I am from the MidWest)...pricing on this food was a bit higher, like larger US cities. We felt the drink pricing was fair for a very nice hotel but thought the food was actually was a bit higher. We had breakfast outside each morning (Mediterranean Restaurant) and the buffet was so nicely done- the service was just fine. I can't recall her name who waited on us each morning but she nailed our order each day--some TA folks commented earlier that the staff had a hard time understanding breakfast orders. Well, the management staff surely reads & listens as it was perfect for us! You order coffee with cream, the cream is even warmed to ensure your coffee stays hot longer.... Nice touch! The homemade donuts were a hit with me! The quality of each meal was very good!
Like in most of the Caribbean, there are taxes on the bill along with gratuity of 10% (I believe). When visiting Miami and S. FL this is also something commonly done. We always left cash tips to ensure the person that waited on us, got what they deserved... as they sure earned it from our experience!

Activities: The golf was outstanding with 11 of 18 holes (I believe) on the water. Ate lunch one day at the golf course and it was OK overall.
Felt very safe venturing out around Cap Cana too - my husband ran some mornings past the Marina and felt very safe. We even ventured out in our golf cart to the Marina and to a different beach. We found a mini-mart, coffee shop and also a pharmacy so this is close enough by if you need really anything. Oh yes, the golf cart they provide with each room is a home run as it really helped us to get around. Another guest commented that the hotel beach is a 2 minute golf cart ride-- yep, indeed it is close by! This was never an issue for us either as we found it all very FUN!
The hotel pool really went unused by us and also by other guests we felt throughout our stay. Nothing really attracted us to the pool (especially when you have your own) but maybe if there were some special events, it might have?

Entertainment- At evening, the Riva Bar had a very nice piano player - who would play any request (off his computer too). One night a week they have a Saxophone player too who was very good! Bar service was well done by Tomas each night we visited! Thanks!
We did find out later that there is a Disco type Bar at the Marina (looked very nice but was not opened so if you are staying more than 3-4 nights, might be something to check out.
The Marina also had a good restaurant Aqua Mare (2 NYC couples recommended to us Mid-West folks)- which we very much liked - Thanks to our friends we met.they were great..we LOVE NYers!! Their menu was vast and food was just fine (like most nice restaurants).
We also went to Juanillo beach which was very nice (about 1-2 miles away and not the beach associated with the hotel--we called it a private/public beach as Cap Cana is gated). There was a nice restaurant there--very clean- can't comment on the food as we did not eat there but looked just fine with an extensive menu and really nice waiters as we enjoyed a drink there.

Spa was very clean (small) and Gladys gives a great massage! I miss her already!

What made this hotel most special, without any doubt, was the staff! We celebrated our Anniversary while there and the staff went above and beyond throughout the day! We had 2 very special desserts among some other surprises too! The staff at La Palapa was OUTSTANDING, consistently great each and every day! Special thanks to: Marena- works so hard with a personality that lights up a room, Sergio (very attentive), Stefano (new and nice), Augustine (great sushi), Rosa- sweetheart-voted best service by us, Jean Carlos & Christian- so accommodating and conversational with us-great, and Crucelis who was just so kind too----
We also want to thank the manager (female) who also had a special evening planned for us the evening of our Anniversary at the Mediterranean Restaurant, I just never got her name but she too was EXCELLENT!

We met the Director of Marketing, Danielle, who was great! He introduced us to his wife and beautiful child- such warm, knowledgeable, worldly people...we could have talked with them all evening! Danielle worked hard throughout our stay, paying attention to every detail and also acknowledging each guest. We saw him often running around throughout the days and even greeted us when we departed the hotel! GREAT SERVICE! Everyone just made us feel special--- The front desk folks are so responsive.. Again, a very special thanks to Elesio (so talented) and also Ana who is beautiful inside and out! Alex, thank you too!

We feel quite fortunate that we had the chance to visit this wonderful hotel as we now have great, lasting memories of our stay and the staff. We feel as though we made friends with this staff. Honestly, we have never provided a review in the past on any hotel but felt compelled to do so as they went above and beyond for us. The least we can do is provide TA readers with some feedback on this truly special property--- special not only because of the beauty of the hotel but the beautiful, caring staff with a mission of pleasing and taking care of each and every guest! They sure do ROC! Keep up the outstanding job and until next time!

Room Tip: the basic rooms are just as beautiful!

Dear Ms. lucypeaches,

This goes to the head of the list of all time great reviews.

You graciously and enthusiastically touched on so many details here. Our business is about thousands of interactions and details daily. We try so hard to get them all right. When we do, it's so nice to be so wonderfully recognized.

I hope you'll return soon and often. Your enthusiasm is contagious and it was wonderful to have had you here.

We stayed at the Eden Roc for 8 nights. The hotel features absolutely gorgeous hotel rooms equipped with state of the art wifi, ipad controlled music and lighting. Extremely comfortable beds and individual pools in each room. Golf carts provided are fun, clean and new.

The staff and service is 5* ...they try really hard to make you feel comfortable and address any needs. The beach is fantastic and golf course world class.

The food is excellent especially the beach restaurant with delicious sushi. I would definitely return to this excellent hotel.

Eden Roc at Cap Cana is in the middle of an undeveloped tract of land, far from the beach. It is literally miles from anything else except the "beach club" to which you can drive. The beach, once you get there, is about 100m long. The sand is nice and there are waves, but you are hemmed in on both ends by golf course. There is a very mediocre restaurant called La Palapa right on the beach. The rest of the "beach club" seems half abandoned. The hotel itself is quirky, but Disney-esque and the restaurant and bar smell like smoke. The pool is cool, but the whole place seems disjointed and has little to do with the Dominican republic.

Dear Mr.Decarts,

With respect to our reviewers and after some investigations regarding your comment, I'd like to respond to you putting things in perspective a little.
In order to be able to comment on Eden Roc at Cap Cana you are asked to have actually stayed in the hotel and experienced our facilities, service and location.

Eden Roc at Cap Cana is not far from the beach and the guests that actually stayed at the property have often shared the convenient and short ride with each suite personal golf cart. Our prestigious and manicured Beach Club well preserved and exclusive, another highlight for guests wanting to enjoy the peace and beauty of this area.

As this is a very public and influential forum, we feel this review is much biased as it is evident you didn't have the pleasure of staying in our hotel, and made a review of a competitor property at the same time which incidentally was extremely positive. We've worked extremely hard to create a beautiful hotel and are thrilled that so many of our genuine guests reviews are so positive.

We hope to have you one day here with us and it will be my honour to show you around.

Kind Regards,

Daniele Trombacco

My wife and I just got back from a perfect baby moon at Eden Roc at Cap Cana. We could not have dreamed of a better place to relax. Our villa with a private pool was quiet and impeccably maintained. The secluded beach was spectacular. But, the best part was the staff and service. We received royal treatment everywhere we turned. Our concierge Eliseo was beyond impressive; making sure our stay was memorable. And, the rest of the staff was truly outstanding, warm and friendly, including: Miledyes, Francisco, Vladimir, Andy, Albert, Valadiro, Victor, Denny, Julio, Pablo, Pablo (the musician), Lisbeth,
Anna Fabiola, Carlos and Luis.

Everyone took such pride in their work no matter what the job and always made us feel special. it was the staff that made this trip so memerable and so very special. Thank you to each of you!
