“Go to Puerto Plata area if budget minded”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

My wife and I have been to ~25 all inclusive resorts including 8 trips to the Dominican Republic. We generally stay at 3 star properties relying on the tour companies assessments and Trip Advisor reviews. We realized we did not pay a lot for the Whala resort and we did not expect to be staying at a high end resort but we have paid significantly less in the Puerto Plata and Samana areas and have been very satisfied.
We had never considered transferring to a different hotel until we experienced the Whala and subsequently moved.
The downfalls of the resort are:
- at the breakfast buffet we were informed no made to order omelets were available, then directed to the buffet bar were we received cold scrambled eggs(food safety implications) and some kind of sausage that was dried out at 7:30 am when it first opened. Later in the morning the omelet station was operating.
- the beach snack bar served cold food from the limited menu
- air conditioner could not effectively cool the room
- the food selections at the buffet are limited and not kept at proper temperatures
- no brewed coffee !!!!!! in a country that has some of the best coffee in the world the Whala has a machine that dispenses a terrible concentrated mixture
- there is a sewer smell at times around the pool areas
- there are approximately 20 lounger chairs in total in pool areas
- 6oz drink cups resulting in very strong mixed drinks
- the beach area is small and the chairs are crammed together like on a cruise ship
The hotel did have positive points such as the front desk staff and the location in Bavaro is in a small shopping district with grocery stores and restaurants within a few hundred feet. The beach in the general area is quite nice.

In general we found the food marginal at best and the overall resort to be well below standards of any all inclusive resort we have ever been to. Frankly I do not understand how our formerly trusted tour company could sell this product. If you want a budget priced vacation go to the Puerto Plata or Samana areas. The beach may not be as impressive as the Punta Cana beaches but the resorts are far superior in food quality and accommodations.

For a 3 star hotel it was better than some 4 stars we´ve stayed at. The hotel is on the beach with easy access and a beach bar for cold drinks whilst sunbathing. Nice clean pool onsite and restaurant serving varied selection of food. The salads were always fresh and liked the fish and seafood. We were all-inclusive and impressed with the overall standard. Our room was on the second floor and was a good size and the balcony overlooked the pool which was nice. Staff are warm and helpful and on hand if you need anything. The beach is everything we´d imagined it would be and it really is like something you see on TV. We sure made the most of it and with the hotel being so close by it was handy to be able to pop back to the room for sunlotion/ books or anything else we might have forgotten! We had a relaxing and very enjoyable week here and cannot recommend enough!

Friends had stayed here earlier in the year and recommended this hotel as a relatively cheap and clean alternative to the bigger hotels. We went for a week and loved it as the beach is on the doorstep and that was the main reason we had travelled, and the main reason most people travel to this area anyway. And it's worth it by the way! Amazing beach and views that you can't get enough of. The hotel is clean and the rooms had comfortable beds with fresh linens, good bathrooms and all we needed for an enjoyable break away. Nice outside space and we used the swimming pool daily and it was kept very clean as well. Its not the most swish of hotels and is smallish in size but as travelers looking for a good deal in a clean, comfortable hotel in a top location, we would also definitely recommend it.

We are a family of 5, 2 parents + 3 teens. We do 2 trips a year and so far we have visited about 20 all inclusive resorts. We usually go to 4 to 4.5 stars. I was our first experience to an all inclusive 3*. Overall it was a very positive experience.

Pros: Staff at the reception was very pleasant to deal with. Rooms are dated but clean. Hot water was a bit slow to come but cold water was not that cold. We had 2 rooms and had no issue with AC. This resort is a nice mix of travellers from around the world. We met people from Russia, Poland, France, Sweden, Venezuela, Columbia and a few Canadians.

Food wise, choices were limited but the quality was better than some 4.5* that we have visited. The buffet menu changes every day and there is always something new to try. Pools are small compared to newer resorts but clean. The landscape around pools is well maintained. BTW this is a tiny resort so you will never be surrounded by a crowd.

Cons: The beach section reserved to the Whala is small, meaning that you enjoy limited personal space (it compares to beaches in Southern France). We spoke to Europeans who had no issue with this but it felt a bit too crowded for us North Americans.

At the buffet, we had to chase waiters (especially the first few days) to get drinks. We often ended up getting our own drinks (wine and water) directly at the bar. This is something that needs improvement. Waiters are incredibly efficient unsetting tables but not so efficient caring for clients. Whether you tip or not doesn't change anything. Coffee is beyond terrible. All they have is instant coffee made from syrup, which is sad in a country like DR that makes one of the best coffee in the world.

Finally, expect sellers on the beach to be pains in the... This has nothing to do with Whala, it is widespread in Punta Cana.

Overall we would go back anytime to the Whala. It is a clean, quiet place, staff is friendly and food is excellent.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the street. We were next to pool no. 2 and it was great.

Overall the vacation here was above the normal standard "3 star" rating. My husband was even happy and he can pick faults with most things. The happy staff and great room service was greatly appreciated and made the difference.
The room was clean, the bed suited my husband better, he likes a firmer bed and the power shower was great.
The pool area was washed down regularly and pool loungers plentiful. Service for drinks and the quality of food was also of a good standard.
The transfer time from the airport was around thirty minutes so there's not a lot of wasted time hanging around.
The beach is wonderful, we did see some seaweed but it's all part of it and did not affect our enjoyment.
This will be a vacation to repeat, for a number of reasons. The friendly atmosphere, the great service and the great location.

It is still our 3 days here but i want to clarifly a couple things i read on trip advisor about how bad Whala Bavaro is. Those things are not true. First of all the place is beautiful and near by a lot of food place. So if you dont like the food there you can try out the local food. All the people work there are extremely nice. I know they dont speak fluent English so i spoke very little spanish to them with mix english. But once you try to speak to them, they will treat you like you are at home because they respect you try. The maid is very nice to us that we always have a nice clean room. The reception people are super nice with a smile always. It is safe to lock you stuff in the electronic safe. It cost only 15 bucks. Wifi cost 30 bucks for a week which is fair. Ive take photos with a lot of local people and they always with that great smile. We dont have trouble at all even we are chinese canadian. They make us feel like home. The beach is very nice but theres some seaweed. Theres always vendor around asking for business. But as long as you said no they will just walk away. Theres always motorbike taxi but not recommend, because you can walk 22 mins to local shopping centre.

I dont know what else i can think of but those bad comment here are not correct. I am still in the hotel when i write this review and i can tell you that i will come back again for sure.

Btw that lobster that they offer for dinner for 20 dollars, its way worth it! Why? Because its humanous big!!!

The bar close at 11 so its super quite after.

I notice that they dont like to deal with russian because they are always rude to everyone.

The AC in the room are very cold.. Love it

Thats it for now.

Room Tip: Room on upper level are quieter. The one near by pool 2 and 3.

Demanded additional money upon arrival. Air conditioner did not work (many others didn't either from the number of folks coming to the front desk to request new remotes for them). No hot water (hotel never has hot water according to maintenance guy (room temperature is their hot). Room had not been cleaned when we unlocked the door on arrival. Beach was unusable because of deep piles of rotting seaweed. The smell at two of the three pools is unbearable. I think it was from a sewage treatment plant next to the hotel? Third pool area did not smell. Food was awful. Guests at the hotel truly all seemed so sad to be stuck there. I am not kidding. Hard to know how anybody could give this place a decent review. It is truly terrible. Do not make the mistake of staying here. TripAdvisor was created to stop places like this. We travel all over the world and are happy with almost any place we can lay our heads including youth hostels in China, etc.
