“Absolutely fantastic!! Ignore the fussy moaners!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2011 via mobile

We have just returned from a 3 week honeymoon at the Vik Arena Blanca and we loved every minute!

The hotel was spotless, with clean towels everyday & everything you could need. There was food & drink 24 hours a day and it was amazing. I am the fussiest eater ever and I definitely put on weight! There's so much to choose from you don't know where to start! The pizza maker was brilliant! The drinks are definitely not watered down as someone on here said.

The pool is big with loads of sunbeds, there are several bars & music & games. The beach is paradise on earth. If you take bread to the sea tropical fish come right up to you.

There are dance shows at night and there was also a magician who was awesome.

I'd highly recommend the dolphin explored trip, it is unforgettable.

I really hope none of these incredibly fussy people put you off!! I was stunned when I read there reviews! There were no bugs, it didn't smell damp, the drinks weren't watered down & the blue arm bands show you are all inclusive so you can get your food and drink!!! This site must attract serious moaners, ignore them, go & enjoy!:)

This hotel is one of the least expensive resorts.. People say you get what you pay for:
1. little bugs attacked my luggage and my clothes that was lying on the wood mantle.
2. food was not very good, plus their was lots of flies all over the food that was being cooked outside. The Buffet tables were also full of flies swarming all over.
3. They have a lady on site, selling packages for the Imagine Night Club for 35.00 per person for one night. My cousin and I Purchase two. Which include transportation too and from the club and two drink tkts. When we tried to used the tkt we were told by the Club that the tour company that sold us the tkts were not affiliated with them. They wanted to charge us 20.00 more dollars.
4. The vendors were like drug dealers harassing you to purchase their goods.
5. The inside of the rooms were not spotlessly clean. First night the sheets looked as if someone had slept on it.
6. Very dull atmosphere... Most of the time there was no music playing....
Even at the lower rate they offer, this hotel is not worth it....
Hated it!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for the recent post on trip advisor concerning various items of your stay that did not meet your expectations during your recent visit. We would like to sincerely apologize for any inconveniences or discontent that they we may have caused and hope that you understand that it was never our intention to disappoint you in any way.

Although most of our guests leave here completely satisfied, with plans to return, we clearly accept the fact that not every hotel can please everyone all of the time. In general, we find your comments to be quite unrepresentative of the usual experience here.
It’s important to point out that we do not have anyone of our staff selling entrance to any disco. Tour operators always mention to their clients that any excursion night or day should by with them. However if you remember the name of the person who sold you this please let me know as they would be immediately taken out of the hotel.

At the “VIK Hotel Arena Blanca” we take your comments seriously and we are constantly using them to improve our resort to exceed or meet expectations.

We thank you for having chosen our resort and hope that you will give us the opportunity to serve you again in the near future.

Please send me an email at your convenience, as I would welcome the opportunity to discuss this further and perhaps assist you with a resolution.

Best Regards,
Cristina Socias

I seriously don't even know where to start....the nightmare began the moment we stepped foot in the VIK. We went there because our Apple travel agent suggested it, and from the pictures most reviews it seemed nice. I have never written a review before and we travel every year, but this is more of of a 'warning' than a 'review. We arrived saturday June 4th, but only stayed till Tuesday June 7th.....and this is why:

This was supposed to be our relaxing, romantic honeymoon where we had good food, nice drinks and helpful friendly people waiting on us. instead it was full of annoying sales people, AWFUL food, blah drinks and rude wait staff. Did I mention we didn't have hot water and our cable went out? By Tuesday I was close to pulling my hair out...I called our Apple representative and we moved to the wonderful hotel next door called Ocean Blue. I'm telling you, it's bad! Do yourself a favor and don't stay here.

After searching for a while to find the right resort for our vacation, my fiance' and I decided on the Arena Blanca because it seemed to have the best reviews and not a bad price. And I figured that the poor reviews were written by people who are too picky and never seem happy with anything anyway. How wrong I was!
From day one, we had nothing but problems. Even at check-in, we were told that they did not have our reservation. After a few minutes of searching, they found the reservation, although they had spelled the name wrong. From there, we were given blue wrist bands which we were told we had to keep on for the entire stay, but were never told why. A very brief overview of the layout was explained, but it seemed that they didn't care we were there and weren't even welcomed. We were checked in by Johan who was very rude. He even laughed at us when we asked him questions. No one on the staff wanted to help us. We were either made fun of or ignored completely.
Once we got to the room in Building 3, we were even more disappointed. It was wet and smelled of mold and mildew. However, we figured that since it was so humid we should expect it. Beware...the mildew, musty smell never goes away and your room is never fully dry.
Throughout the whole stay we encountered more problems. There are spiders all over the room, the food is awful and looks like they re-use the previous day's food everyday at the buffet, you are constantly harrassed by people wanting to sell you a timeshare to their sister club, Cayena Beach. Relaxing afternoons at the beach are not possible for this very reason. It seems every 10 minutes someone wants to sell you either the timeshare or an excursion. (Avoid Pedro; he doesn't give up.) I finally had to resort to being rude and telling them to leave us alone for them to finally get the hint.
The sheets and towels have stains on them...all the time. Even after the morning "cleaning", your "new" sheets have stains on them as well as the comforters.
On the 4th day, we noticed a piece of paper slipped under our door informing us that the next day our room would be fumigated!! This was when we snapped. We went to guest services politely explaining all of our problems and were directed to the night manager, Ricardo, who could have cared less that our stay was less then perfect. He did call the cleaning staff to tell them to bring us new bedding, towels, etc. We were also told that their washing machine was broken as well. Which means, NO ONE at the resort was getting clean linens, and they had no time frame on when they would have a new one. After returning to the room, our "new" linens were still stained. Upon telling him about the bugs and spiders all over the room, his response was "This is a tropical climate, you should expect to have bugs in your room."
The beer is watered down, their version of orange juice is really something that tastes like watered down Tang, the meat in the Italian restaurant tastes like taco meat (which also gave my fiance' diarrhea later that evening), the gift shop and mini market are over priced (a small bottle of Tums costs $14), remember to bring pants if you want to eat in any restaurant besides the buffet (they won't let you in which led us to buying a $50 pair of pants at the gift shop), the art/jewelry vendors will gouge you (after buying a $60 necklace, it broke in 2 hours, then 2 days later we noticed the very same necklace in the gift shop was $15).
The last day of our trip, we were called to set up a time for them to pick up our luggage to take to the lobby. No one showed up at our scheduled time. We waited for 10 minutes, then finally decided to take the luggage ourselves. No one at check-out asked us if we enjoyed our stay. In fact, it seemed like they wanted us out of there ASAP.
The ONLY saving grace for the resort is the fact that the beach is beautiful and one gentleman named Eddie in the "El Bucanero" restaurant that is friendly, kind, and helpful, and who truely wanted to make sure your needs were met.
We will never return to the VIK Arena Blanca nor the Dominican Republic itself. We could not wait to get home and hate to admit it, but we need a vacation AFTER our vacation. We are currently making plans for another beach trip later this summer so salvage the horrible vacation given us this time.

If you're headed to the Dominican Republic expecting everything to be like the Hilton in downtown Toronto, then you will be disappointed. This is a different country, with different customs and language. The people are super-friendly and they try their very best to communicate and get you what you need. It is a very relaxed, non-hurried atmosphere, and your most valuable asset will be your patience. North Americans could really take a lesson, we are WAY too stressed out!

We had a room on the third floor of building #4, with a fabulous view of the pool area and the ocean. The bathroom was beautiful and the shower was huge. Everything was nice and clean, and the A/C worked perfectly. My favorite feature of our room was that there was no alarm clock! Our maid did a great job making up our room every day. She didn't speak any English, but it didn't matter; she understood what we asked for and she got it right away. There were always maintenance workers around, sweeping the walks, pruning the trees, or cleaning the pool. Many of them would be happily singing away while they worked to make the resort beautiful.

The food is NOT horrible, as one previous poster indicated. The buffet was always well stocked with many types of international foods. The omlette guy in the mornings was a hoot, as was the Asian stir-fry guy at supper. The beach grill made awesome chicken and burgers, and the two a-la-carte restaurants do not require reservations or limit your visits per week. The wait staff was always friendly and helpful.

The beach is beautiful and there were lots of sunshades to go around. I watched people get up at the crack of dawn to race with their towels to 'save' huts for later in the day. We didn't find this necessary as we always found a free hut any time we went.

The vendors are very persistent, but here's the trick to handling their advances: keep in mind that this is their means of survival so they have to try hard. For example, if the Walmart clerk doesn't sell you that necklace, it doesn't matter. She still gets her paycheck and still has a job the next day. If these guys don't sell you the necklace or T-shirt, they might not eat that night. So while I did buy some things, and turned most of them down, I smiled politely and declined their offers. No need to be rude.

I did partake in the spa treatment, that was amazing. I got a body scrub, mud wrap, jaccuzzi and a head-to-toe massage for $80US. HIGHLY recommend that!

We would absolutely stay at the Vik Arena Blanca again, and we will be bringing our children next time. It's a beautiful resort!

my wife and i stayed from may 20th -june 3rd. when we arrived, it was paradise. we got a room on the first floor of building 5 (ocean view). building 1 overlooks the parking lot, so try to stay away from that one. room was one of the unrenovated ones, but still nice and livable. the air-conditioning makes your room slightly damp, youll notice the dampness in your clothes, other then that rooms were great. always clean towels, bottled water and toilet paper. bed slightly uncomfy but im used to a soft bed.

the beach was cleaned daily. we thought it was one of the better stretches of beach along the whole bavarro coast, fish everywhere, crabs on the beach, and beautiful birds everywhere. at 10am everything changed. boats zipping around everywhere, taxiing parasailers to the parasailing boats all day. helicopters flying overhead every 15 minutes. The excursions people (people that set up trips like parasailing, banana boat, deep sea fishing etc..) were very pushy and annoying. they walk the beach and in front of the pool all day, asking you to go on trips.it was ok at first but got very annoying as time went on. they were relentless which is to be expected from people working on commission. try to avoid Roberto in front of the pool (selling the segway excursion) as he was very rude once he figured out you werent going to put money in his pocket. we befriended a lovely german couple there and they had there own run in with roberto, telling us of how he threatened to cut there heads off. time share people we equally annoying. they would ask you to view the cayena beach club, saying it would only take 10 minutes and you would get a gift. nearly 2 hours later, there asking you to sign up for some vik promotional offer, all they want is 23,000$. we laughed.

the food was great, the kitchen staff and servers were equally great. the guy who made us omlettes from may 20th-27th was the coolest guy ever, i was sad i didnt get to see him the last week of our vacation. :( reception was awesome and very helpful. the maids did a good job as well. the vendors where another story. once or twice a week the hotel invites vendors to sell souvenirs on the hotel property. they were very pushy, annoying. you get a real sense of desperation when dealing with them. we called them the "yellow shirts". they would grab your arm so you couldnt get away, and would try to push there items on you. if you decided to buy something, out would come a calculator. then they would ask for rediculious amounts of money for there merchantise. if a deal wasnt stuck and you tried to walk away, they would ask you to get them beers and food as there not allowed to help themselves to buffets etc... by the end of the trip we would see them standing in certain areas of the hotel, and my wife and i would have to take detours and longer paths to our destinations just to avoid them and there pushy, desperate behaviour.

so, between dealing with all the people trying to sell things on the beach, at the pool, and in front of the buffet and stores, it was hard to get peace and quiet.

the shows were pretty good, the circus was awesome, and soo was the magic show.
i was very upset to meet a certain excursions person trying to sell drugs to me 1/2 my vacation. i didnt complain about it, so i guess that was my fault. i could drop names but i wont.

overall the hotel and the hotel grounds were beautiful, so was the beach front and water. people that work directly for the hotel are awesome, the rest were terrible. the second the hotel drops the excursion people and the cayena time share people i would go back, until then, no way.

Room Tip: building 5 is closest to the beach, the best imo
