“Beaches were amazing but...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

My husband and I just returned from a week at the grand paradise bavaro and will never return. To start off they had double booked our room which wasn't the biggest problem as of course these things can happen, then we go to take a shower, it doesn't work, is falling out of the wall and there are no linens in our room. We tried for another room but there was nothing as they booked at 104 % while we were there. The food at the buffets were the same daily and lunch and dinner buffet had identical options. The al la carte restaurants were ok. One we had was amazing which was at la cana grill so we decided to go back but the next night they changed it to yet again buffet style for some reason. We were pretty upset as that was the only meal that didn't make us ill all week. Power outages happened 3 times over the week and about a half a day with no water in the entire resort. Staff were not to eager to serve which we were told later was because many are loosing there jobs with the new take over by sunwing. Not too sure how true that is. Over all we were extremely disappointed.

Room Tip: If you do try this resort specifically ask for one by the main lobby or you will be about a 15min wa...

Dear Jess d.

Thank you for taking the time to address your recent experience at our resort.

I'm sorry you had this bad experience in the hotel, it is true that we had power outages throughout the area and all hotels were affected. No water in the hotel was because our supplier had no electricity, but we operate the plant on site and outside it had no electricity.
About our employees demotivation, I can tell you they are motivated to keep working in the hotel after remodelation, maybe because this situation of power outages can put them uncomfortable, because this is not a common situation.

Sincerely yours,

“Very basic”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

Went here for one day due to a travel delay. Luckily did not pay anything for this place, the airline put us up for the night. WARNING: This place is a BIG spring break resort, so you are warned. If you are over 25 years old DO NOT BOOK THIS PLACE ANYTIME IN MARCH OR APRIL!!!
The place is very basic and indestructible, no luxuries, no service, no quiet, no air conditioning that functioned properly. The only thing that wasn't bad: the food was good. Do yourself a favor and spend a little more and stay at a nicer resort if you are over 25. If you are UNDER 25, you'll love it here!

“Average...at best”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

I just got back from 5 nights at this resort, Feb 23-28. Let me start with the positive things at this resort: Most of the staff we came into contact with are very friendly and try to do their best to help you. However, they speak very little English, but it wasn't a big deal to us. We thought that the grounds were very clean, and we never saw any bugs. The ecological spa was very relaxing and worth the money. The ocean and pools were gorgeous.Get there early if you want to sit in the shade...I saw people put their stuff on chairs at the beach and at the pool early. Ocean waves are very large, be careful. If you want snacks, bring your own. Chips were 8 bucks a bag at the store on the resort.
Negatives: We got what they called a Superior Room. The room was not nice...there was paint stains everywhere, on the curtain to the patio, on the bedding, on the floor. It looked as though they put the bedding on the floor and then painted the walls. There was only one sheet and a nasty stained comforter to sleep with, our room was always freezing. Our room was on the other side of resort, away from the beach and main lobby. The air condition vent was towards the ceiling on the wall and the air blew right on you. They gave us two beds instead of one king bed. Bring an extra small blanket, I would have been miserable without mine. The air conditioner was always on 72 and you could not change it. The only option was to turn it off, then it was really hot and humid. There was a very musty smell in the room also. We had random power outages for two days of our stay...I think the entire resort had them. Luckily they did not last too long. We were on the other side of the resort, so we had no idea what was going on...good luck trying to get someone at the front desk. They never answered any of my phone calls. One night we had no water, the toilet would not flush either. We tried to call the front desk and no answer. We ended up walking to the other side to the lobby just to see what was going on. The front desk informed us we would have water at 11 that night. Do not get a room on the other side of the resort, it is near a disco and we did not sleep for days. It is so LOUD. There are a lot of Europeans and Russians at this resort, very few Americans. Now to the food: Luckily I had read reviews and decided I was going to really watch what I ate. I pretty much ate no meat, and never got sick. Nobody explains to you when arriving how the a la cart restraunts work. You pretty much have to go get a ticket, then go stand in line at 8am to make a reservation. Strangly enough, we were the 4th people in line and by the time we got up there, only one restraunt was available. There is obviously another way of getting reservations. We ate at the steakhouse and the seafood place...I would have preferred the buffets to be honest. The buffet had a good selection of food, but nothing great. But we never got sick. Get there early. We spent 2700.00 on this trip...I think was about 1000.00 more then what it should have been. The people and the beautiful beaches saved this vacation for me. I may go back to the DR again some day, but not to this resort.

Room Tip: Do not get the Superior room on the other side of the resort, the area by the disco and swimup bar p...

Dear Katie M.

I am sorry to read that the room we gave you It was not what you expected, also the problem with the air, which I will personally review and I appreciate you call my attention on this.
On the water issue, it was a day we not had and there was no electrcity outside the hotel and our water supplierdid not have either. Our power plant, gives power to the entire complex, but less air, this is not something that happens constantly. I regret that this happened to you, during your stay.
We want you to return, the hotel will be completely remodeled and the majority of staff will continue with the joy of serving.

“Excellent Time at GPB - Thanks Juan Gomez”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

First of all I want to say a BIG THANK YOU to Juan Gomez, he made out trip fantastic! We were a group of 6 travelling on two different dates. Our friends arrived first and Juan Gomez greeted them at the front desk with their rooms ready and they did not have to check in. Juan proceeded to move our friends into the area that the rest of the group was staying in. Upon our arrival a few days later. Juan was there to greet the rest of us...once again with our rooms all ready....no waiting in line to check in...that was perfect. Everyday Juan would go out of his way to stop by our "Paradise" (area by the pool we claimed for the week) and ask if we were enjoying ourselves and asked if we needed anything. He also assisted with the A La Carte Dinner reservations for us all week...once agian this was fantastic! We all had a wonderful time at the resort and I would not hesitate to recommend this resort. We also heard that this resort will be closing for renovations sometime in April and re-opening in November (as a 5 star) and that Sunwing is the company that bought the property! All in all the food was really good, service was fantastic in all restaurants and bars....and the staff was extremely friendly and always happy! Punta Cana has been one of my favourites over the years...as I have been there now 9 times and I will definitely be back....looking forward to seeing how the renovations at the resort turn out.....Do not listen to all the bad reviews....go enjoy and ask for Juan Gomez and he will make your trip that much more fantastic!

Team Ontario

“Thanks for a great time.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013

First off i want to say a HUGE thanks to Juan Gomez Ramirez this gentleman went above and beyond we arrived at the hotel on Feb 23-march 2 and juan met us with a gift, changed our room closer to all the restaurants and beach. We were tired and hungry and juan already had a dinner reservation made for us.

The hotel staff were all very friendly i enjoyed haggling over cigars with felix in the shop, our maid was fantastic this lady always had a smile and our room was always very clean and well stocked with water and pop.

I want to put some things into context in any trip to an island there is a risk that a persons body might not react well to food so my wife and i always plan ahead we took immodium and pepto bismal with us on our trip and didnt really need them. the food was well cooked, beautifully presented and very tasty, with a huge variety of choices.

I dont know the gentleman's name cooking on the pasta station but he was awesome and had a smile every time we saw him.

the beach was beautiful and clean, towel rentals are available but my wife and i brought our own beach towels so this wasnt a concern.

We tried 4 of the a la carte restaurants, Asian, Italian, Dominican and cana grill they were all good in our opinions. the waiters and staff were fast and attentive and made sure we were happy.

This resort will be changing to a blue diamond 5 star in the fall we had a chance to see the new rooms and the new layout of the resort looks like alot of work is going to be done we would love to go see it when its finished but only if Juan Gomez Ramirez is still there.

I cant stress enough how kind and generous Juan was and the effort he put in to make us happy for our honeymoon if he is still there when the hotel changes over we WILL DEFINITELY go back to see him and enjoy another vacation

Room Tip: my wife and i were moved to building 1 room 1324 and it was fantastic close to everything on the res...
