we stayed at the occidental from march 29 to April 5,this resort has a good layout it's really easy to find your way around now about the resort its a beautiful resort with lovely pools and a beautiful beach the rooms are very clean but a little dated the front desk were great they treated us really good now the food if you go hungry here its your fault the main buffet is loaded with all kinds of different food as for the a la carte I liked the Italian and steak house the best but make sure you want your steak cooked more then medium rare if not you will get it red Occidental are really lucky to have a good workforce like they have the people there are so nice and I want to thank them all I will return to this resort

Room Tip: we stayed at block 10 which you get a pool view if you can get the front rooms

Am still here for another few days and have to agree that you get what you pay for. It is nothing out of the ordinary but then again I did not pay for out of the ordinary. I am happy with a clean room, good food and friendly people. The beach is beautiful and the grounds clean. The staff in the buffet are great if you have a smile for them and take the time to say hello and thank you.
It may be that others have higher expectations but in my opinion if you want more you have to pay more. Relax, enjoy and next week when I am back at work I'll be wishing I was back here.

Just got back from this resort a week ago. We were a bit afraid to stay her because of the mixed reviews, but we took the chance because we are both really laid back travelers with easy travel expectations. Our experience has been if you pay a Honda price, you're going to get a nice new reliable car, but you'll never be getting a luxury car like a Mercedes. Occidental Grand is not a luxury resort, you don't pay near the price you do for the newer luxury resort, so don't expect to get that kind of service. Also, you are outside of your country- people won't always speak your native language very well or at all. There are people from other countries traveling there as well. If you are uncomfortable with that- don't leave your country. We never had a problem communicating, but we also made sure to meet people half way and do our best to communicate in their native language. We loved the diversity of all the guests at the resort, met many people from all over the world! It was lovely!

We did have an overall wonderful experience!

Things we liked:
-Check-in was easy- even though we were early, they held our bags and gave us our wristbands so we could go eat.
-The main buffet in the lobby was our favorite, we ate there for almost every breakfast and lunch and one of the nights for dinner.
-Our building concierge, Toni, was wonderful. So sweet and got us set up with our dinner reservations for the entire week.
-The Oriental and the Mexican restaurants were the best of the 4, in our opinion.
-Even though we each have very different diet needs, we always found options that worked for both of us.
-They were very accommodating: We had the "romantic" package, so we had a private lobster dinner on the beach planned. It poured that night, so they moved us to their VIP Royal Club restaurant instead, and went out of their way to make up for being rained out. Guest Services was very helpful.
- The beach was beautiful, but windy so we stayed at the pool. The whole resort had beautiful grounds that were well kept.

Things that were “ok”:
-The Beach Club buffet, it was a small buffet so the variety could have been larger, but we each found enough to eat, and we enjoyed petting and playing with the few stray kittens that were wandering around.
- Rooms were outdated, but not bad. Clean, comfortable and bug free. Big vaulted ceiling, large and quiet balcony. We had an older flat-screen tv, not a tube tv as it seems a lot of other people reviewed they did. The fan and air conditioning worked fine and were not silent, but not super loud. Refrigerator was always stocked and our housekeeper was great at letting us have extra coffee and water if we needed. Towels were good quality and our bathroom was clean and dry. Not much to complain about. Coffee pot broke, they replaced it right away. Bed was a bit too hard. We were on the top floor in building 11.
-The safe was worth the money, we just wish it was included in the room instead of an option.

Things we didn’t like:
-We found the steakhouse skippable, and wouldn't go back.
-Don't buy the romantic package at the resort- it was a nice add-on but not worth the resort price. We were only happy with it because we booked it for only a few dollars more than our original booking price.
-The sales hassel. We expected that we were going to get thrown a few sales pitches. Unless you are looking for a chance to join a travel club, the free breakfast to sit through the Royal Club orientation is not worth it. Also, book any off-site activities/tours online before you leave. You will still get hassled by sales people every day, but at least you can say no thank you. Don’t buy souvenirs at the on-site gift shops or vendor market that comes in and sets up. Unless you are not leaving the resort or you forgot a last minute gift. The prices are not worth it, and the quality is not authentic.

Up for a bit of adventure? Walk just off property and grab a drink at Steve's Bar. There are also authentic cafes and shops.
Take a motorcycle taxi to Don Lucas or Lucas Meester if you want cigars, the ones sold on the beach or around the resort are fake or low quality.

Room Tip: No elevators in the buildings, so be aware of the floor you are on. We loved being on the 3rd floor...

We just came back from Punta Cana and loved our stay at the Occidental. We stayed in the ROYAL CLUB section and we were so glad. It was like a resort within a resort. We had a luxury vacation room. Rm 19-208. It was very modern and clean with a cathedral ceiling and balcony and big screen tv. It included unlimited internet in the room and beach, safety deposit box in room, fridge restocked daily and beds were VERY comfy. Upon arrival we had a bottle of rum and fruit waiting for us. There were 3 of us and the sofa mattress was a little thin so we got them to put a bedspread underneath the sheets and then it was fine for my daughter. We almost moved to another room but they were not near as nice as ours. The bedspread underneath saved us. My daughter was a little chilly from the a/c so we asked for another blanket and pillow. To save the confusion we left a note that we translated into Spanish thx to the computer. Made things easier. Most understood English very well. Especially the private restaurant. The food was 1st class there as well as the serving staff. The dining room requires pants for the evening and since my husband didn't bring any we usually ate at the buffet for supper. On out last night we thought we would eat there outside ( where we loved it) since we had seen others in shorts outside but all the tables were all taken. The waiter actually went and found us a table, brought it back and set it. We really appreciated it. After eating at the private area once we ate there for all our breakfasts and lunch. So nice. The buffet was alright but the Royal is classy and quiet and right next to the beach. The ROYAL CLUB also has a private check in, private beach area with bar and a huge Jacuzzi and private pool. We like it quiet and gets a little noisy but well within reason. There were fireworks and fire entertainment one night. All the staff at the Royal were great!! The staff work very long hours and we always tipped them often. The evening entertainment was pretty good at the main stage. They put a lot of work into the MICHAEL JACKSON tribute. Can't say a lot about the others since we were so tired from the day we didn't get to see them all. We went to 2 a la cartes. The steak house and Italian. The Italian was pretty good. The steak at the steak house was pretty tough. We had steak the next day at the ROYAL CLUB for lunch and it was delicious. You have to try the pizza upstairs by the main stage. We wanted to have it again but we always ate well we never had room for it. They are open all night and every Canadian we met loved it. If we get to go again we have no hesitations to stay here again. It wasn't much more than the regular room package and sooo worth it if you want to be spoiled.

Room Tip: Our room was a Royal Club Luxury room.

A decent location spoiled by seemingly honest invitations to "welcome" events, which in reality are just a sleazy way to waste your time by attempts to sell you way too expensive vacation club memberships which if you should buy you would never be able to get rid off while hooked, obligated to pay ever increasing annual membership fees, with promised benefits being curtailed till unavailable as you must agree the Vacation Club is allowed to change rules - which they certainly do till your membership loses the most benefits a value. Be aware of noise till 4 am from drunk vacationers since cheap local drinks are free after 11 pm. If you want a good night sleep go and camp on the sea side not in this low class joint.

Room Tip: room are equipped with the cheap furniture, electrical outlets and TVs do not often work, the air co...

The worst hotel I've ever stayed at. The staff is ignorant and not helpful at all. The rooms smelled like mold, air conditioner was very noisy, the 21" tube tv was fuzzy, the toilet never worked, you had to ask for bath towels in which the reply was that they were all out. The staff was always annoyed unless they were trying to sell you something, from timeshares to the worst excursions to even drugs. Never stay here, ever.

My partner and I were a little worried after booking here and reading some reviews but u have to keep in mind that everybody's travel expectations are different and u have to over look some things. I was a little nervous more about the fact that it was a bit bigger of a resort than what I had been too but to my surprise it was great and never felt crowded or had to wait long for anything. We were soo happy with our choice! The Occidental is a bit out dated compared to some but it was clean, comfortable, and the beach was amazing. All the workers at the resort worked very hard and were smiling everyday. We stayed March 29th-April 6th and the weather was great the whole week. Flying Air Transat we got the Preference Club which gives u a bunch of inclusions which some are 5 a la carte's, turn down service, ur own bartender in the "Air Transat" section, bottle of rum, fruit basket, slippers and a robe. Air Transat building's are 23,24,25 which the other couple we were staying with stayed in building 25 and their room was very nice. We ended up getting in building 10 because all the other buildings were full. Our building was very close to lobby, main pool and our room was very nice as well, with no problems. The food was good, man theres A LOT. If u can't find something that u like then there's something wrong with u. We only ate at the Oriental which was good, and the steakhouse;omg I forgot that when u are in the D.R and u don't like ur meat red and bleeding u have to tell them them loud and clear to COOK COOK COOK! I couldn't eat my steak it was so raw I almost barfed! But again it's the D.R not just the resort. The drink's were good, they def had morn and afternoon drinks lol They know what their doin'! Above the swim up bar is the home run snack bar. It is open in the a.m to transat only and it was a nice quiet breakfast but very limit compared to the breakfast buffet. In the afternoon it was open to all and the have burger's, fries, bacon, nacho's, cheese and more. Oh boy, u have got to try the nacho's and cheese and bacon. It was the best afternoon soak up some alcohol place! The entertainment to me was a bit on the boring side compared to some other resorts. It was more Vegas style than anything. So, if ur into that than u will love it. One night, there was this handsome man who played the sax for a bit. He was amazing. Reading some reviews, there has been a lot of people who said it was a party resort, or a lot of spring breakers. Of course there would be, plan ur trip around that if u don't want little kids running around drunk, ur going to get that at any resort around spring break time. We planned our trip according and have never had problems. There was just as many old people as there were young. Time shares and people trying to pressure u into buying; yes u will get that, but if u have traveled before, u know to expect that no matter where u go in the D.R. Learn how to barter and just simply say no if ur not interested. It`s as simple as that. We went to the shopping plaza just outside the resort and it was so fun! Again, know how to barter and the value of some things, it will get u far!

Room Tip: Building 10 is near the lobby and main pool;excellent choice.
