We just returned from this resort and our vacation was very mediocre. We have stayed at other Occidental resorts in Mexico and Cozumel and loved them. This was a disappointment. To begin with we are members of the vacation club, but that did not free us from the constant stalking of one of the vacation club reps. We were constantly hounded with notes under our door to meet with them, phone calls that we had an appointment that we never made etc. One night the rep that was bothering us came up to us and told us not to book any excursions thru the First Club because he could get us better prices. When we went to see him regarding the excursions all he did was waste our time telling us to upgrade for a mere $7,500 - 16,000 (never talking about excursions). As much as we told them no, it continued. Twice he tracked us down while we were eating dinner. We were there to relax and this made us frustrated and uncomfortable. This is the number one reason we will not return to this resort.
The beach is beautiful and we did have a lot of fun there. We never had an issue with chairs, but that could be because there were so many spring breakers that did not emerge until later in the day. Unlike the other Occidentals, there is no staff taking drink orders while you are at the beach or pool. Jonathan, at the towel hut, is really nice and was very nice to our kids. There is only one place to get towels which is a long walk if you do want to use the fun pool.
The venders that walk along the beach are very nice but the ones that work the resort on vendor nights can get in your face, even if you say no. No matter what you want to buy, if you are from the US they will tell you they want at least $40 - the guys on the beach are much more fun to negotiate with. Also - the gift shops in the front entrance of the resort have really nice, no pressure people working in them. We purchased several things from them.
There were s-trip spring break groups there during our stay and that did put a damper on things. We have younger children and could not use the fun pool due to the raunchy music that was blaring - using the f-bomb, n-word and many degrading terms for women. We were really disappointed in the resort's decision to allow this music since there were also many families as well as retired people there.
We took one excursion - "Country Mega truck", recommended by the First Club. It was just okay. We were to visit a school, but we just stopped outside of it's chain link fence, not getting out of the truck. We did learn about the country side, but had an odd moment when we stopped outside of a sugar cane field - as the guide was carving sugar cane with a machete for us to try a worker came up to us (with a machete) and waved it at my husband and told him to give him some money. It made for an interesting $260 day.
A huge plus for this resort is Wilken the tennis pro. He is wonderful. We signed our kids up for daily private lessons with him and they learned so much. He is a very happy person and very enthusiastic about the game and teaching it.
Our room was in building 10 on the 1st floor and it was nice. Housekeeping is amazing. We tipped her daily and our room was always perfect. Also - we sent out some laundry twice and it came back quickly and was not expensive. The concierge in this hotel is extremely attentive and helpful. This building is next to the open air lobby that plays loud DJ music from about 11:00-2:00. We were able to tune it out, but if you are a light sleeper this may not be the building for you.
The food is average but the staff that serves you in the restaurants is really nice and friendly.
One of our favorite things to do was walk up the beach, past the Palladium resort to a little vendor village. Great prices and really nice people. It's worth the walk.
